Overview

This document describes the Rheem Value Series Upflow Gas Furnace, specifically the RGRS/RGRT- Series, designed for residential heating applications. It highlights the furnace's key features, operational aspects, and maintenance considerations, emphasizing its efficiency, quiet operation, and adaptability to various installation environments.

Function Description

The Rheem Value Series Upflow Gas Furnace is a high-efficiency heating appliance designed to provide warmth and comfort in residential settings. It operates by burning natural gas or LP (propane) gas to heat air, which is then circulated throughout the home via a duct system. The "upflow" designation indicates that the heated air is discharged upwards from the furnace. This series is engineered for high Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE), with models reaching up to 93.5% AFUE, signifying that a large percentage of the fuel consumed is converted into usable heat, thus reducing energy waste and operating costs.

At its core, the furnace utilizes a primary and secondary heat exchanger system. The primary heat exchanger, made of aluminized steel, is where the initial combustion takes place and heat is transferred to the circulating air. The secondary heat exchanger, constructed from 29-4C stainless steel, further extracts heat from the exhaust gases before they are vented, contributing to the high efficiency. This two-stage heat exchange process ensures maximum heat recovery.

Combustion is initiated by a direct spark ignition system, which provides a reliable and efficient way to light the burners. The furnace employs in-shot burners, which are designed for clean and efficient combustion. A specially designed inducer system works in conjunction with a slow-opening gas valve to manage the flow of combustion air and exhaust gases, contributing to the furnace's quiet operation. Pressure switches monitor the airflow and gas pressure to ensure safe and proper operation.

The integrated furnace control board is the central intelligence of the system. It manages all operational functions, including ignition, flame sensing, blower operation, and safety controls. This board also provides diagnostic capabilities, allowing technicians to quickly identify and troubleshoot any issues. Furthermore, it includes hookups for an electronic air cleaner, enabling improved indoor air quality when an accessory air cleaner is installed.

Usage Features

The Rheem Value Series Upflow Gas Furnace is designed with versatility and ease of use in mind, making it suitable for a variety of residential installations. Its low-profile "34 inch" height is a significant feature, allowing it to be installed in utility rooms, closets, or alcoves where space might be limited. This compact design also makes the unit lighter and easier to handle during installation. The low-profile design is particularly advantageous as it can often be used in applications that traditionally would require a horizontal furnace, offering greater flexibility in placement.

Installation flexibility is further enhanced by the provision for left or right side gas, electric, and condensate drainage connections on upflow models. This adaptability simplifies the piping and wiring process, accommodating different home layouts and reducing the need for extensive modifications. The furnace also offers optional indoor or outdoor combustion air intake, with the flexibility to pipe combustion air to either the top or right side of the cabinet. A special molded fitting is provided to ease the installation of combustion air piping.

The furnace's operation is characterized by its quietness, a key comfort feature for homeowners. This is achieved through the combination of a slow-opening gas valve and a specially designed inducer system, which work together to minimize operational noise.

For enhanced indoor air quality, the integrated control board includes accessory hookups for an electronic air cleaner, allowing homeowners to integrate an air purification system with their furnace.

The control board also features self-test diagnostics and flame sense current diagnostics, which aid in troubleshooting and ensure the system is operating correctly. Field-selectable heat fan off delay options allow for customization of the blower's post-heating cycle, optimizing comfort and efficiency.

The furnace is compatible with a variety of cooling coils and plenums, which are available as optional accessories. This allows the heating system to be easily integrated with an air conditioning system, providing a complete home comfort solution. Thermostats from the Rheem 200-Series, 300-Series, 400-Series, and 500-Series are available as accessories, offering programmable and communicating options to control the furnace effectively.

Maintenance Features

The Rheem Value Series Upflow Gas Furnace incorporates several features that simplify maintenance and ensure long-term reliability. The integrated control board plays a crucial role in maintenance by offering comprehensive diagnostics. This diagnostic capability allows service technicians to quickly identify and diagnose operational issues, reducing troubleshooting time and potential repair costs. The self-test diagnostics and flame sense current diagnostics provide valuable information about the system's status, helping to pinpoint problems accurately.

The furnace is designed with a pre-paint galvanized steel cabinet, which offers durability and corrosion resistance, protecting internal components from environmental factors and extending the life of the unit.

Filter maintenance is facilitated by the availability of internal filter racks for bottom or side return air, as well as external bottom and side filter racks. These racks accommodate standard filter sizes, making it easy for homeowners to replace filters regularly. While filter racks are shipped without filters, suitable 1-inch (25.4 mm) filters can be used, and filters are available through PROSTOCK®. Regular filter replacement is essential for maintaining good airflow, system efficiency, and indoor air quality.

For installations at high altitudes (above 2000 ft.), specific high altitude kits are available. These kits are crucial for ensuring the furnace operates safely and efficiently in different atmospheric conditions. While the kits do not include additional burner orifices, the burner orifice size needs to be recalculated and verified for high-altitude installations, and a burner orifice change may be required. This highlights the importance of professional installation and adherence to the National Fuel Gas Code (NFGC) guidelines for high-altitude conversions.

The design of the furnace, with its accessible components, aids technicians in performing routine inspections and repairs. The inclusion of a blower compartment door safety switch ensures that the unit cannot operate when the blower compartment door is open, providing a safety measure for maintenance personnel.

The furnace is designed for use with natural or LP (propane) gas, and all models can be converted between these fuel types using factory-approved kits. These conversion kits are available as optional accessories from parts distributors, allowing for flexibility in fuel source and simplifying maintenance for technicians who may need to adapt the unit to different fuel supplies.

A limited warranty is provided for the furnace, covering parts that fail under normal use and service. The heat exchanger has a twenty (20) year warranty, and conditional parts (requiring registration) have a ten (10) year warranty. This warranty coverage provides peace of mind and underscores the manufacturer's confidence in the product's durability. For complete details, including applicable terms and conditions, homeowners are advised to consult their local contractor or the manufacturer for a copy of the product warranty certificate.
