Overview

This document is an operator's manual for a RIDGID 24 Volt Lithium-Ion Battery Charger, model number 140315001 (R85009). It provides essential information for safe and effective use, including safety instructions, product specifications, operational procedures, and maintenance guidelines.

Function Description:

The RIDGID 24 Volt Lithium-Ion Battery Charger is designed to charge 24 Volt RIDGID lithium-ion battery packs. It ensures proper charging by monitoring battery temperature and charge level, and it can handle both deeply discharged and new battery packs, which require an initial charge to activate. The charger is engineered for dependability, ease of operation, and operator safety, aiming to provide years of rugged, trouble-free performance when properly cared for.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Charger Voltage: 24 Volt DC
  • Charger Input: 120 V, 60 Hz, AC only
  • Charge Rate: Approximately 1 hour for a fully discharged battery pack with a temperature between 32°F (0°C) and 150°F (65°C).
  • Battery Type: Specifically designed for lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. Charging other types of batteries may cause them to burst, leading to personal injury or damage.
  • Operating Environment: Not for outdoor use or exposure to wet/damp conditions. Should be used in a well-ventilated area, with charger vents kept clear.
  • Power Supply Compatibility: Can operate with most generators and inverters rated at 300 Watts or higher.

Usage Features:

  • LED Indicators: The charger features several LED indicators to communicate the charging status:
    • Charging (ON RED, OFF GREEN): Indicates fast charging is in progress, typically completing in 1 hour.
    • Deeply Discharged (ON RED, OFF GREEN): Charger pre-charges the battery until normal voltage is reached, then begins fast charge mode. This may take longer than 1 hour.
    • Full (OFF RED, ON GREEN): Indicates fast charging is complete, and the charger maintains charge mode.
    • Hot Battery Pack (Flashing RED, OFF GREEN): Charger waits for the battery pack to cool down to approximately 150°F (65°C) before beginning fast charge mode.
    • Cold Battery Pack (Flashing RED, OFF GREEN): Charger waits for the battery pack to warm up to a temperature of more than 14°F (-10°C) before beginning charging.
    • Defective (Flashing RED, Flashing GREEN): Indicates a defective battery pack or charger. Users are advised to try re-seating the battery or charging a different battery. If the issue persists, the battery or charger may be defective and should be disposed of or serviced.
  • Battery Pack Activation: New 24 Volt lithium-ion battery packs require an initial charge to activate before first use.
  • "Memory-Free" Charging: Lithium-ion battery packs do not have a "memory" effect, meaning they can be recharged at any time without needing to be fully drained.
  • Fade-Free Power: Lithium-ion batteries deliver consistent power throughout their run time; power drops from full to zero once the charge is depleted.
  • Charge Level Indicator (on battery pack): Allows users to check the remaining charge in the battery pack (1/4, 1/2, 3/4, or full capacity) by pressing and holding a button. A flashing 1/4 indicator means less than 10% charge.
  • Key Hole Hanger: The charger includes a keyhole feature on the back for convenient, space-saving wall mounting. Screws should be installed 4-1/8 inches apart (center distance).
  • Cold Weather Operation: Lithium-ion battery packs can be used in temperatures down to -4°F (-20°C). If very cold, the pack may "buzz" for the first minute as it warms up. Using the tool in a light-duty application for about a minute will help warm the pack to normal operating temperature.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Maintenance:
    • Avoid using solvents on plastic parts, as they can cause damage. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, and grease.
    • Keep brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-based products, and penetrating oils away from plastic parts to prevent damage.
  • Service: Only identical RIDGID replacement parts should be used for servicing. Any other parts may create hazards or product damage. Repairs beyond customer-replaceable parts should be performed by an authorized RIDGID service center.
  • Battery Pack Storage:
    • Remove the battery pack from the charger once it is fully charged.
    • For storage longer than 30 days, store battery packs below 80°F and away from moisture.
    • Store battery packs in a 30%-50% charged condition.
    • Charge the pack normally every six months during storage.
  • Battery Pack Removal and Preparation for Recycling:
    • Lithium-ion batteries should be recycled or disposed of properly, as local, state, or federal laws may prohibit disposal in ordinary trash.
    • Upon removal, cover the battery pack's terminals with heavy-duty adhesive tape to prevent short circuits.
    • Do not attempt to destroy or disassemble the battery pack or remove its components.
    • Keep battery packs away from children.
    • The RBRC (Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation) seal and 1.800.822.8837 phone number indicate participation in a recycling program.

Safety Instructions (Key Points):

  • Read and understand all instructions before use to prevent electric shock, fire, or serious personal injury.
  • Charge only lithium-ion rechargeable batteries specifically designated for this charger.
  • Do not use the charger outdoors or in wet/damp conditions.

  • Unplug the charger from the outlet before maintenance or cleaning.
  • Disconnect the charger from the power supply when not in use to prevent electric shock and damage.
  • Avoid touching uninsulated portions of the output connector or battery terminal.
  • Wear safety goggles or glasses with side shields, and a full face shield if necessary, during operation or when blowing dust.
  • Always remove the battery pack from the tool when cleaning or performing maintenance.
