Overview

The Rittal Compact Cooling Unit is designed to dissipate heat from enclosures, thereby protecting temperature-sensitive components by cooling the internal air. These units are suitable for external or partial internal mounting on enclosures.

Technical Specifications:

The cooling unit operates on a closed cooling cycle, utilizing R134a refrigerant, which is chlorine-free and environmentally friendly with an Ozone Depleting Potential (ODP) of 0. A filter dryer is integrated into the hermetically sealed cooling circuit to protect against moisture, acid, dirt particles, and foreign bodies. The units are available in various models with different power inputs, including L1-N and L1-L2 configurations, as detailed in the connection data table. For instance, models like SK 3370220 and SK 3370320 use L1-N, while SK 3370424 and SK 1194424 use L1-L2. The maximum ambient temperature for operation is +50°C. The mains voltage must not exceed a tolerance of ±10%. The unit is designed for use at sites with a continuous current-carrying capacity of more than 100 A per phase and a supply voltage of 400/230 V. Pre-fuses, as specified on the rating plate (e.g., miniature circuit-breakers with "K" characteristic or gG standard type slow fuse), are required for short-circuit protection.

Usage Features:

The unit features a controller with a 3-position 7-segment display (H1) that continuously shows the internal enclosure temperature in °C and any fault codes. The controller manages the condenser fan and compressor, with a minimum restart time of 3 minutes for the compressor and a switching difference of 5 K to prevent short cycling.

Controller Operation:

  • Display: H1 displays the internal temperature and alternates with system messages when generated.
  • Buttons:
    • SET button (H4): Used to access and confirm parameter settings. Pressing for more than 3 seconds accesses the parameter setting menu (password 22). A quick press (1 second) displays/sets the set point.
    • UP button (H2): Used to scroll through parameters and increase values.
    • DOWN button (H3): Used to scroll through parameters and decrease values.
    • Mute button: Mutes audible alarms.
    • Compressor ON/OFF: Pressing the UP button for more than 3 seconds switches the compressor ON or OFF.
  • Parameters:
    • Setpoint (St): Determines the desired internal temperature (factory preset to 35°C). Adjustable within a range defined by r1 (min) and r2 (max).
    • Regulation differential (rd): Influences temperature control precision and compressor switching frequency. Lower values offer more precise control but higher switching frequency, while higher values offer less precise control but lower switching frequency.
    • Continuous cycle period (cc): Sets the duration for forced cooling mode (default 1 hour).
    • Alarm and fan differential (A0): Determines the activation threshold for the high temperature alarm (AH).
    • Alarm maximum temp. (AH): Sets the maximum temperature for the alarm.
    • Delay for high and low temp. alarm (Ad1): Sets a delay for alarm activation, especially after power-on.
  • Forced Cooling: Activated by pressing UP+DOWN for more than 3 seconds. The display shows "cc" and the icon flashes. This mode maintains refrigeration regardless of internal temperature, useful for rapid cooling. It activates after the minimum compressor off time (3 minutes) and runs for 1 hour before returning to normal operation.
  • System Messages: The display shows error codes (e.g., E0 for ambient temperature probe broken, HI for high temperature alarm) with corresponding buzzer and alarm relay status.

Installation:

  • Mounting: The unit can be externally or partially internally mounted. For external mounting, cut sections and drill holes as per the drawing, attach seals, and secure with pins, washers, and nuts. For partial internal mounting, fix mounting bars to the air conditioner, attach sealing tape to the rear enclosure half, and secure the front enclosure tray.
  • Safety: Ensure the enclosure is bolted to the floor to prevent tipping. Use a roller door for problem-free opening/closing. For transportable enclosures, use additional transport anchorage.
  • Pre-mounting checks: Ensure good ventilation, freedom from dirt/moisture, correct air extraction cutout, available mains connection ratings, ambient temperature below +50°C, and no packaging damage (indicating refrigerant loss). The enclosure must be sealed, units separated by at least 200mm from walls, and air inlet/outlet unobstructed. Units must be fitted horizontally (max. 2° deviation). Condensate drainage must be provided.
  • Electrical Connection: Connect the power supply cable according to the nameplate voltage and frequency. Use an all-pin isolating device with at least 3mm contact opening. Ensure low-noise mains connection and install specified pre-fuses.

Maintenance Features:

The cooling circle is a maintenance-free, hermetically sealed system. The installed fans are maintenance-free, mounted on ball bearings, and protected against moisture and dust, with a life expectancy of at least 30,000 operating hours.

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean components of the external air circuit using a vacuum cleaner or compressed air. Stubborn, oily stains can be removed with a non-flammable degreaser.
  • Maintenance Interval: Recommended every 2,000 operating hours, or more frequently depending on air pollution.
  • Maintenance Sequence:
    1. Check dirt level.
    2. Replace filter if soiled.
    3. Clean cooling membranes if soiled.
    4. Activate test mode to check cooling function.
    5. Check compressor and fan noise.
  • Compressed Air Cleaning: Disconnect power, twist off screws on the top and bottom covers, open the cover, disconnect the display plug, twist off screws on outside fans, remove outside fans, and clean the heat pipe and compressor chamber using compressed air.
  • Safety during maintenance: Always switch off the power supply before opening the unit and take precautions against accidental re-activation. Never use flammable liquids for cleaning.

Storage and Disposal:

Store the cooling unit in an appropriate position for transport, avoiding temperatures above +70°C. The unit contains refrigerant and oil, which must be disposed of properly for environmental protection. Rittal provides facilities for disposal.

Scope of Supply and Guarantee:

The unit comes with 1 cooling unit (ready for connection), 1 sealing tape, and 1 set of mounting and operating instructions. A 1-year guarantee from the date of supply covers repairs or replacement, provided the unit is used correctly and not modified or handled improperly.
