Overview

The Royal HT3SL is a versatile cross-cut shredder that also functions as a pencil sharpener and letter opener, designed for home or small office use.

Function Description:

The primary function of the HT3SL is to shred documents into small cross-cut pieces, enhancing security for discarded papers. It also integrates a pencil sharpener for standard #2 type pencils and a letter opener for envelopes. The shredder operates automatically when paper is inserted, and the sharpening and opening functions are also activated automatically when their respective items are inserted.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Shred Type: Cross-Cut
  • Shred Width: 5/328" X 1" (This appears to be a typo in the manual and likely refers to 5/32" x 1" or a similar small cross-cut size)
  • Shredding Capacity: 3 Folded Sheets (of 20 lb. bond paper)
  • Feed Opening: 5" (for paper)
  • Maximum Pencil Diameter: 7.4mm
  • Dimensions: 10"(H) x 9"(W) x 7"(D)"
  • Weight: 7 lbs.
  • Input: 115 volt AC, 2.5 amp.
  • Duty Cycle: 2 minutes on / 4 minutes off (for continuous shredding at maximum capacity)

Usage Features:

The device features a Power Slide Switch with three settings:

  • AUTO: This is the default operational mode. When in AUTO, the shredder automatically starts when paper is inserted and stops when shredding is complete. The pencil sharpener and letter opener also function automatically in this mode.
  • OFF: This setting terminates AC power to the shredder and is recommended when the device is not in use for an extended period. In this mode, none of the functions (shredding, sharpening, or opening) will work.
  • REV (Reverse): This setting is used to clear paper jams by reversing the shredding process.

To set up the device, the Pencil Shavings Retention Cup should be placed inside the wire mesh basket, and the shredder head then securely placed on top of the wastebasket, ensuring it sits flush for proper operation of all functions. The power cord is plugged into a standard 115-volt AC outlet.

For shredding, up to three folded sheets of 20 lb. bond paper or small materials like envelopes and receipts (up to 5" wide) can be inserted into the feed opening. For pencil sharpening, pencils are inserted into the pencil opening, and the sharpening starts immediately. The pencil should be removed once sharpened to prevent motor damage. For letter opening, the leading edge of an envelope is inserted into the opener, ensuring the letter inside is not against the leading edge of the envelope itself. The cutters will start automatically and feed the envelope through.

The HT3SL is equipped with a motor overload protection device. If the shredder is operated continuously at maximum capacity for longer than 2 minutes, or if the shredding capacity is exceeded (e.g., more than three sheets), the thermal motor overload protection may activate, terminating power to the motor. In case of a major paper jam, the power switch should be set to OFF or unplugged, and a 15-minute wait is required for the thermal overload protection to reset. Excess paper can then be carefully pulled out while the switch is briefly moved to REV.

Maintenance Features:

  • Wastebasket Emptying: The wastebasket should be emptied frequently. Before emptying, moving, or cleaning the shredder, it should always be turned off or unplugged.
  • Pencil Shavings Retention Cup: The pencil shavings retention cup should be emptied frequently to maintain optimal sharpening performance.
  • Paper Clips and Staples: While the HT3SL can cut staples, it is not recommended. Paper clips and staples should ideally be removed from documents before shredding to prolong the life of the cutters.
  • Motor Cooling: To prevent motor overload, continuous shredding at maximum capacity should not exceed 2 minutes, followed by a 4-minute off period to allow the motor to cool.
  • Cleaning: The manual advises turning off or unplugging the shredder prior to cleaning.

Safety Cautions:

  • Keep loose articles of clothing, ties, jewelry, hair, or other small items away from the feed opening to prevent injury.
  • Do not place hands or fingers into the shredder throat.
  • Refrain from inserting hard materials like pens, chalk, crayons, or coloring pencils into the pencil sharpener, as this can damage or clog the cutting blades.
  • Never allow the shredder to remain in a jammed condition with the AC power turned on.
