This document provides instructions for the Russell Hobbs water filter kettle, a household appliance designed for both filtering and heating cold water.
The Russell Hobbs water filter kettle serves a dual purpose: it filters tap water to reduce impurities and then heats it for beverages or other uses. The integrated filter, containing ion exchange resin and activated carbon, is designed to reduce substances like calcium carbonate (limescale), chlorine, herbicides, pesticides, fertilisers, bacteria, particles (e.g., sand, rust), and odours. This not only improves the taste and quality of the water but also helps to prolong the life of the kettle by reducing limescale build-up. The kettle can also be used solely for filtering cold water for cold drinks, eliminating the need for a separate water filter jug.
The kettle operates with a 13A BS1362 fuse in a 13A BS1363 plug and must be earthed. The wiring instructions for plug replacement are provided: green/yellow to E or E, blue to N, and brown to L. The filter life-timer is powered by a nickel metal hydride battery, which is non-replaceable and designed to last for approximately 3 years. Replacement life-timers are available from the Customer Service Department. The filter cartridges themselves are AQUA OPTIMA™ filters, which can be purchased from retailers or online at www.aqua-optima.com. The kettle has a minimum fill requirement of at least 2 cups of water to prevent damage. It should not be filled past the "max" mark to avoid spitting boiling water.
Getting Started: Before first use, the reservoir should be removed, the prepacked filter lifted out, and the reservoir replaced. The kettle should then be filled with about a litre of water, boiled, and the water discarded. This process should be followed by rinsing the kettle and reservoir. After cooling, the filter can be fitted.
Preparing a New Filter: New filters require preparation to ensure optimal performance. All packaging must be removed, and the outside of the filter wiped with a damp cloth (without washing-up liquid). The filter should be submerged in a bowl of cold water and gently shaken until no more bubbles are released, indicating that all air has been removed. Black carbon particles on the filter or in the water are harmless.
Fitting the New Filter: To fit a new filter, align the tabs on the top of the filter with the bulges underneath the reservoir. Push the filter gently up against the seal and turn it anti-clockwise (about 1.5cm) to lock it into the reservoir. Then, slide the release button towards the handle and hold it there while lowering the reservoir into the kettle. Slide the lid tabs into the slots, lower the rear of the lid, and return the release button to its rest position.
Rinsing the Filter: After fitting, the filter needs to be rinsed. Slide the fill button towards the kettle to open the lid segments and hold it. Fill the reservoir through the lid with about a litre of water (using a jug is recommended for accuracy). Return the fill button to its rest position, wait for the water to run through the filter, then pour it away. This process should be repeated twice before the kettle is ready for use.
Filter Life-Timer: The kettle features a filter life-timer to indicate when the filter needs replacing. After fitting a new filter, the life-timer must be set. For a standard two-month filter, press and hold the RESET button for 10-14 seconds. The inner ring and bullseye will flash alternately, and the top left outer segment will turn black. The display has 6 parts: a bullseye, an inner ring, and 4 outer segments. The display changes over 60 days (new - 15 days, 16-30 days, 31-45 days, 46-60 days, over 60 days). When the filter needs replacing, all 4 outer segments will flash in addition to the bullseye and inner ring. For a one-month filter, press and hold the RESET button for 4-8 seconds; only the bullseye will flash, and outer segments will measure 7½ days each.
Everyday Use: Place the stand on a stable, level surface and route the cable to prevent overhang or tripping hazards. To fill the reservoir, remove the kettle from the stand. Slide the fill button towards the kettle to open the lid segments and hold it. Fill the reservoir through the lid with about a litre of water, ensuring not to exceed the "max" level. Return the fill button to its rest position. To switch on, place the kettle on the stand, plug it into the wall socket, and move the switch to "|". The lights will glow, and the kettle will begin heating. The kettle automatically switches off when the water boils (switch resets to "O", light goes off). It can be manually switched off by moving the switch to "O" or by lifting the kettle from the stand. Always remove the kettle from the stand before pouring. Pour slowly and avoid over-tilting to prevent splashing and to keep water from getting onto the control area. If moisture appears on the stand after lifting the kettle, it is normal condensation from the steam used for automatic switch-off. Discolouration on the kettle floor is also normal, due to the bonding of the element.
Using with Insufficient Water: Boiling with insufficient water can shorten the life of the heating element. The kettle has a boil-dry cut-out feature that disconnects the element if water levels are too low. If this occurs, remove the kettle from the stand and let it cool completely on a work surface before replacing it on the stand.
Cleaning: Unplug the stand and allow the kettle to cool completely. Wipe the kettle, inside and out, with a damp cloth. The lid and reservoir (without the filter) can be washed with warm soapy water, but must be thoroughly rinsed to avoid tainting the water. Wipe the stand with a damp cloth. Keep all connectors and sockets dry. Do not immerse the kettle or stand in liquid. Avoid using harsh or abrasive cleaning agents or solvents.
Descaling: Even in soft water areas, regular descaling is necessary. The water filter helps reduce limescale and phosphate scale, but the kettle should still be checked frequently for signs of scale. Limescale can be white, coloured, or rusty-looking, while phosphate scale is generally invisible. Scale causes overheating, reduces the kettle's life, and can trigger the boil-dry cut-out. To descale, first remove the filter, as descaling solutions will destroy it. Use a descaler suitable for plastic products and follow its instructions. Rinse the kettle several times after descaling, then fill, boil, and discard the water to ensure no residues remain. Finally, replace the filter and refill the kettle. Products returned under guarantee with faults due to scale will incur a repair charge.
Troubleshooting the Life-Timer: If the life-timer displays anything unexpected or if settings are lost, it is recommended to leave the life-timer alone for 5 minutes, then check the display. If settings are still lost, the best course of action is to fit a new filter and reset the timer from scratch. Pressing the RESET button for more than 3 seconds can lead to loss of current settings and erratic display behaviour. If the RESET button is pressed while cleaning, the display may run a check routine where each segment flashes before returning to normal.
Battery Disposal: The nickel metal hydride battery in the life-timer should not be disposed of with normal household rubbish. Local authorities have facilities for environmentally friendly disposal of these batteries.
Replacing the Life-Timer: To replace the life-timer (when the battery runs out), carefully lever it out with a blunt object like a spoon. Do not use a blade to avoid injury. Push the replacement life-timer into the space in the handle.
