Overview

This document describes a Russell Hobbs coffee maker, a household appliance designed for brewing coffee. The device features a sleek black and silver design with a digital display and intuitive controls.

Function Description

The primary function of this appliance is to brew coffee. It operates by heating water and passing it through ground coffee held in a filter, then collecting the brewed coffee in a glass carafe. The coffee maker is designed for household use and can brew various quantities of coffee, from a few cups to a full carafe.

Usage Features

  • Filling the Reservoir: To begin, the user removes the carafe from the hotplate and opens the lid to expose the water reservoir. Water is then poured into the reservoir up to the desired mark. The appliance has a "max" mark to indicate the maximum filling level.
  • Adding Coffee: After filling with water, one scoop of filter-ground coffee is added to the filter for each cup of coffee desired. The lid is then closed, and the carafe is replaced on the hotplate.
  • Switching On: The appliance is plugged into a power socket. Upon plugging in, it will emit a beep, and the display will flash "12:00".
  • Brewing Coffee Immediately (Coffee Now): To brew coffee immediately, the user can ignore the clock settings. For brewing less than 5 cups of coffee, a dedicated button can be pressed, which will display "1-4" on the screen. This feature slows down the brewing process to ensure the coffee has the same strength as a full carafe. Pressing the brew button will cause it to glow, and coffee will begin to drip into the carafe shortly after. Once brewing is complete, the coffee maker will beep, and the hotplate will keep the carafe warm. The brewing process can be stopped at any time by pressing the brew button again.
  • Status Light: The appliance includes a status light that changes color to indicate the freshness of the coffee. A blue light signifies that coffee is brewing or has been brewed within the last 0-20 minutes. A flashing blue light indicates that the coffee was brewed 20-40 minutes ago.
  • Auto Shut-Off: For safety and energy conservation, the coffee maker automatically shuts down approximately 40 minutes after brewing finishes. The manual notes that after about 40 minutes, chemical changes will affect the taste of the coffee.
  • Setting the Clock: The coffee maker features a 24-hour clock that retains its settings until the appliance is unplugged. The "h" and "min" buttons are used to set the correct hour and minute.
  • Brewing Coffee Later (Coffee Later): To program the coffee maker to start brewing at a specific time, the user first sets the desired start time using the "h" and "min" buttons. If no "h" or "m" button is pressed within 5 seconds, the coffee maker will revert to "normal" time display, and the timer setting process will need to be restarted. If brewing less than 5 cups, the dedicated button can be pressed, displaying "1-4".
  • Activating the Timer: Once the desired start time is set, the "AUTO" button is pressed. "AUTO" will appear on the display. At the set time, the brew button will glow, and the coffee maker will begin brewing. The timer can be canceled before brewing starts by pressing the brew button again.
  • Recalling Set Time: If the user forgets the set timer, pressing and holding the brew button, then releasing it, will display the programmed time.
  • Quick Cup Feature: The carafe can be removed at any time during brewing for a quick cup. To prevent the filter holder from overflowing, the carafe should be replaced on the hotplate within approximately 20 seconds.
  • Stronger Brew: For 5 cups or more, a dedicated button can be pressed once to make the brew slightly stronger, indicated by "1-4" on the display.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: Before cleaning, the appliance should be unplugged and allowed to cool. To turn off the appliance, the brew button should be pressed three times. The contents of the filter holder should be tipped into a bin. The exterior surfaces of the appliance can be cleaned with a damp cloth.
  • Carafe and Filter Holder Cleaning: To open the carafe lid, the lever at the rear, above the handle, should be pressed. The carafe and filter holder can be hand-washed. These parts are also safe for washing in the top rack of a dishwasher.
  • Self-Clean Function (Descaling): To prevent scale buildup, the self-clean function should be used at least monthly in normal water areas and more frequently in hard water areas. This operation takes 45-60 minutes.
    • Preparation: Ensure the kitchen is well ventilated, as heating vinegar can produce an unpleasant smell.
    • Solution: Mix 6 cups of white vinegar with 4 cups of water in the carafe.
    • Execution: Pour the mixture into the reservoir, close the lid, and replace the carafe on the hotplate. Plug the appliance into a power socket. Press the "O" button, and "O" will appear on the display. Part of the mixture will come through, and the remainder will soak in the boiler for 30 minutes before coming through.
    • Completion: At the end of the operation, the appliance will beep and switch itself off.
    • Rinsing: After descaling, fill the reservoir to the max mark and run the appliance without coffee. This rinsing process should be repeated 2 or 3 times until the vinegar smell is gone.
    • Warranty Note: Products returned under guarantee with faults due to scale will be subject to a repair charge.
