Overview

The Russell Hobbs RH1915 Espresso Machine is a household appliance designed for preparing espresso, hot water, and texturing milk for various coffee beverages. It is a compact and user-friendly machine, emphasizing safety, reliability, and ease of use.

Function Description:

The primary function of the RH1915 is to brew espresso. It achieves this by heating water to an optimal temperature of 92°C - 94°C and forcing it through finely ground coffee. Beyond espresso, the machine also features a steam wand for texturing milk, allowing users to create lattes, cappuccinos, and flat whites. Additionally, the steam wand can dispense hot water for other beverages or pre-heating cups. The machine incorporates a cup warming plate on top, capable of pre-warming up to nine espresso cups, which helps preserve the crema of the espresso.

Important Technical Specifications:

While specific power consumption (watts) is not explicitly stated, the machine operates on a 230-240V AC power outlet. The water reservoir has a capacity of 1.6 liters, which is removable for easy filling and cleaning. The heating system is designed to reach and maintain the ideal espresso brewing temperature. The unit is equipped with non-slip rubber feet to ensure stability and prevent scratching of surfaces.

Usage Features:

The RH1915 features an intuitive control panel with a power switch, a heating light, and a steam/hot water selector. The operating dial is central to its functionality, allowing users to select between espresso, steam, or hot water modes.

Preparation Before Use:

Before first use or after a period of inactivity, the machine requires rinsing. This involves filling the 1.6L water reservoir with fresh cold or filtered water. The reservoir can be filled directly by lifting its lid or by removing it entirely using its handle. Once filled, the power cord is inserted into a 230-240V AC outlet, and the power switch is pressed. The red light on the power button and an orange 'heating' light will illuminate, indicating the machine is on and heating up. The 'heating' light will turn off when the machine reaches the optimal temperature. It's crucial to ensure the operating dial is in the 'off' position before powering on. For rinsing, an empty filter basket (either the one-cup or two-cup) is placed in the filter handle, which is then secured to the group head. A large container is placed under the pouring spouts, and the operating dial is turned clockwise to the espresso setting, allowing water to run through until the reservoir is empty. Cups can be pre-warmed on the warming plate.

Espresso Making Process:

  1. Preheat Glasses: Fill glasses/cups with hot water to preserve the espresso's crema, then set them aside.
  2. Preheat Filter Handle and Basket: Select the appropriate filter basket (one-cup for single espresso, two-cup for double) and place it into the filter handle. Attach the filter handle to the group head. Purge water through the filter handle by turning the operating dial to the espresso setting, then turn it off. Dry the filter basket.
  3. Dosing and Tamping: Use the supplied measuring spoon to place finely ground coffee into the filter basket. For best results, the coffee grind coarseness should be adjusted to achieve a slower pour for finer grinds and a faster pour for coarser grinds. The coffee tamp is used to apply firm, level packing pressure, twisting 90 degrees to polish the grounds and seal the coffee cake. Excess coffee grounds around the filter basket edge should be brushed off. Over-dosing the filter basket should be avoided. Consistency in dosage and tamping is key.
  4. Espresso Pour: Lock the filter handle onto the group head, turning it to the right as far as it will go. Empty the preheated glasses/cups and place them below the pouring spouts. Once the 'heating' light is off (indicating the machine is ready), turn the operating dial clockwise to the espresso setting to start the pour. The machine will make a pumping noise, which is normal. Once the desired level is reached, turn the operating dial back to the 'off' position to stop the pour. An ideal pour will be dark and caramel-colored with reddish reflections. Serve immediately.

Texturing Milk:

  1. Activate Steam Function: Press the 'steam/hot water' switch to the steam setting. The amber 'heating' light will illuminate as the machine adjusts to the steaming temperature.
  2. Purge Steam Wand: Once the 'heating' light goes off, turn the operating dial anticlockwise to the steam/hot water setting to purge a small amount of steam, then turn it off. This removes any condensed water.
  3. Texture Milk: Place the steam wand approximately 1cm below the surface of the milk in a jug. Angle the jug to rest the steam wand on its spout. Raise the jug until the nozzle is in the center of the milk. Activate the steam function by turning the operating dial to the steam/hot water setting.
  4. Finish: Close the steam by turning the dial to the 'off' position. Immediately wipe the steam nozzle and wand with a damp cloth and purge a small amount of steam to clear any milk residue. Swing the steam/hot water wand over the drip tray.

Hot Water Dispensing:

  1. Activate Hot Water Function: Press the 'steam/hot water' switch to the hot water setting. The amber 'heating' light will illuminate as the machine adjusts temperature.
  2. Dispense Hot Water: Once the 'heating' light goes off, place a cup under the steam nozzle. Turn the operating dial anticlockwise to the steam/hot water setting to dispense hot water.
  3. Finish: Close the hot water by turning the dial to the 'off' position.

Maintenance Features:

Regular cleaning is essential to maintain the machine's effectiveness and the taste of the coffee.

  • Drip Tray: The grid and drip tray should be emptied and cleaned regularly with water and a mild, non-abrasive washing-up liquid. Staining from coffee oils is normal over time.
  • Brewing Head, Filters & Filter Handle: The filter and filter handle should be rinsed under warm water after each use and washed with warm soapy water periodically. To clean the brewing head, flush water through it and wipe the inside rim with a damp cloth. Running the machine with an empty filter after each session helps keep the brew head clean. Clogged filter holes can be cleared with a fine bristled brush.
  • Cleaning Pins: The machine includes two cleaning pins: a GREY pin for the single hole in the base of the filter basket and a BLACK pin for the hole in the base of the steam wand. These are stored at the base of the espresso machine where the water reservoir sits.
  • Steam Wand Cleaning: After texturing milk, wrap the steam wand with a damp cloth and turn on the steam for 10 seconds to clean it.
  • General Care: Do not wash accessories in a dishwasher. Avoid leaving the filter handle locked in position for extended periods or when the machine is not in use, as this can shorten the life of the brew head rubber seals.

Important Safeguards:

  • Always place the unit on a flat, level surface.
  • Ensure voltage matches mains voltage.
  • Do not operate without water in the reservoir.
  • Never remove the filter holder during water or coffee flow due to pressure.
