This document provides instructions for the Russell Hobbs BRITA Water Technology kettle, a household appliance designed for heating water. The kettle integrates a BRITA MAXTRA filter cartridge system, which is a key feature for improving water quality.
The primary function of this appliance is to boil water for household use. It incorporates a BRITA MAXTRA filter cartridge to filter water before heating, which helps to reduce limescale, chlorine, and other substances that can affect taste and odour. This filtration process also reduces metals like lead and copper that might be present in domestic plumbing, contributing to better-tasting water and extending the kettle's lifespan by minimizing limescale buildup. The kettle operates by heating water placed inside it via an electrical element, and it includes an automatic switch-off mechanism once the water reaches boiling point.
Before first use, or when replacing a used filter cartridge, the lid needs to be opened by pulling the lid release up. To remove a used cartridge, hold the funnel firmly with one hand and grip the ring-pull with the other, then pull it up and out. For a new cartridge, remove all packaging. It's normal for the packaging to be damp or for black carbon particles to be present; these are harmless. To ensure efficient operation, the filter cartridge must be submerged in a bowl of cold water and gently shaken until no more bubbles are released, removing all air. After this, flush the filter cartridge by pushing it into the funnel until it's fully seated. Fill the funnel quickly with a jug to the bottom of the slots, and once it empties, refill it to the ring-pull on top of the filter cartridge. This process should fill the kettle to the maximum mark. Discard this water and repeat the operation. After discarding two lots of water, the filter cartridge is ready for use.
The BRITA Memo feature tracks the filter cartridge's 4-week life. To reset it, press and hold the START button until all four bars appear and flash twice, then release. One bar will disappear each week. When all four bars are gone, a flashing arrow will appear, indicating it's time to replace the cartridge. A flashing dot at the bottom right of the display confirms the Memo is working. It's advisable to check for a spare filter cartridge when the display shows one bar remaining.
To fill the kettle, pull the lid release up to open the lid. Fill with at least two cups of water, but do not exceed the maximum fill line. Overfilling can cause the kettle to spit boiling water. Use a jug to fill the funnel quickly to the bottom of the slots. Once the funnel empties, fill it to the ring-pull on top of the filter cartridge. This should fill the kettle to the maximum mark. If the water level is above the maximum mark, pour some water out. Close the lid and press down to lock it.
Ensure the switch is in the 'off' position (O) before plugging the stand into a wall socket. Place the kettle on the stand. Move the switch to '|' to turn it on; the light will illuminate, and the kettle will begin heating. The kettle will automatically switch off and the light will go out once the water boils. To switch off manually, move the switch to 'O'.
Pour slowly and avoid over-tilting the kettle to prevent splashing. Do not tilt the kettle backwards, as water might get onto the control area. If this occurs, allow the kettle to dry for 12 hours in a warm place before use. Moisture on the stand after lifting the kettle is normal; it's steam from the automatic switch-off mechanism. Discolouration on the kettle's floor is also normal, due to the element's bonding.
Using the kettle with insufficient water will shorten the element's life. A boil-dry cut-out will switch the kettle off in such cases. To prevent the kettle from cycling on and off, remove it from the stand and let it cool before replacing it.
If the kettle hasn't been used for a few days, empty and rinse it out, then flush the filter cartridge as described in the "Preparing the Filter Cartridge" section (points 10-15).
Always ensure the switch is off (O) and unplug the stand from the wall socket. Allow the kettle to cool completely before cleaning. Wipe the kettle, both inside and out, with a damp cloth. Keep the connectors dry.
To clean the funnel, hold the handle with one hand and place the other hand under the lid hinge. Lift the rim and lid up and off the kettle, then lift the funnel out. Press the hook on top of the filter down and forward to release the filter into the spout. Wipe the available surfaces of the funnel with a damp cloth. Do not wipe the filter cartridge itself. Replace the funnel and filter cartridge, ensuring the flat area of the funnel faces the handle. To replace the rim, fit the latch under the top of the handle and press the front of the rim to lock the clips into the kettle.
Lift the mesh filter out of the spout. Rinse it under a running tap while brushing with a soft brush. Lower the filter back into the spout until the tab engages in the grip below the spout. Press the top of the filter towards the kettle to lock the hook in place.
The appliance contains a battery that must be removed and recycled or disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. To remove the BRITA Memo, insert the end of a screwdriver into the notch above the Memo and prise it out of the lid. Local authorities will have arrangements for recycling or disposing of the BRITA Memo. The appliance itself, marked with the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol, should not be disposed of with unsorted municipal waste but should be recovered, reused, or recycled to avoid environmental and health problems.
