Why is my Ryobi 990r Trimmer engine difficult to start?

  If your Ryobi Trimmer engine is hard to start or won't start, first ensure the ignition switch is set to “RUN (I)”. Other potential causes include: the primer bulb not being pressed enough (press it fully and slowly 5-7 times); the engine not being choked (use the starting procedure with “FULL” CHOKE); an empty fuel tank (fill it); a flooded engine (use the starting procedure with “PARTIAL” CHOKE); valve clearance out of adjustment (adjust valve to rocker arm clearance); a plugged spark arrester screen (clean or replace it); or a fouled spark plug (clean, regap, or replace it).

Why won't the cutting head advance line on my Ryobi 990r?

  If the cutting head on your Ryobi Trimmer won't advance the line, it could be due to several reasons. The cutting head might be out of line (refill with new cutting line), the inner reel might be bound up (replace the inner reel), the cutting head might be dirty (clean the inner reel and outer spool), the indexing teeth might be worn or burred (replace the inner reel and outer spool), the line might be welded (disassemble the cutting head, remove the welded section, and rewind the line), the line might be twisted when refilled (disassemble the cutting head and rewind the reel), or not enough line is exposed (push the Bump Knob and pull out the line until a minimum of 102 mm (4 in) is outside of the cutting head).

Why is the starter rope difficult to pull on my Ryobi Trimmer?

  If the starter rope on your Ryobi Trimmer is hard to pull, it could be due to oil accumulated in the combustion chamber (remove the spark plug or drain the oil from the spark plug hole) or the unit being operated with low or no oil (check the oil before starting). You can also pull the starter rope several times to remove any excess oil from the cylinder, clean the spark plug and wipe off excess oil with a dry cloth, and reinstall the spark plug.
