Overview

This document describes the SABO 47-ECONOMY, SABO 47-A ECONOMY, SABO 47-VARIO, and SABO 47-VARIO E lawnmowers, which are hand-guided rotary petrol lawnmowers designed for grass and lawn care in gardens and landscapes. The VARIO models include a selective VARIO drive with speed control, and the VARIO E model also features an electric start.

Function Description:

The lawnmower is primarily used for cutting grass and maintaining lawn surfaces. It can operate with a grass collector for efficient collection of clippings or without the collector for rear ejection. The VARIO models offer a variable speed drive, allowing the operator to adjust the mowing speed to suit different conditions and personal preferences. The electric start feature on the VARIO E model provides convenient engine ignition.

Important Technical Specifications:

The lawnmowers are equipped with a B&S 4-stroke engine, 650 Quantum model, with a displacement of 190 cm³. The nominal engine speed is 2800 min⁻¹, and the device power is 2.4 kW. The electrode gap for the spark plug is 0.7 mm.

For VARIO E models, a 12 V / 4 Ah battery is used for the electric start. The fuel tank capacity is approximately 1.5 liters, and it should be filled with unleaded standard petrol with a maximum of 10% ethanol. The oil capacity is 0.6 liters, and SAE 30, SAE 20W50, or SAE 15W40 lubricating oil is recommended.

The cutting width for all models is 470 mm. The cutting height can be centrally adjusted from 25 mm to 80 mm (25, 30, 40, 45, 55, 60, 70, 80 mm). The handlebar is adjustable to three different heights. The grass collector has a volume of 65 liters.

For models with VARIO drive (47-VARIO / 47-VARIO E), the driving speed ranges from 2.7 to 4.3 km/h. The 47-A ECONOMY model has a fixed driving speed of 3.6 km/h.

The weight of the lawnmowers varies by model:

  • 47-ECONOMY: 33 kg
  • 47-A ECONOMY: 37 kg
  • 47-VARIO: 37 kg
  • 47-VARIO E: 39 kg

The overall length of the machine is 1625 mm, width is 500 mm, and height is 935 mm. The front wheels have a diameter of 180 mm, and the rear wheels have a diameter of 200 mm. Both front and rear wheels use cup-and-cone bearings.

The guaranteed sound power level (LWA) is 96 dB(A), and the emission sound pressure level at the operator's workplace (LpA) is 85 dB(A) with a measuring inaccuracy of 3 dB. Vibrations on the handlebar (ahw) are 5 m/s² with a measuring inaccuracy of 2.5 m/s².

Usage Features:

  • Handlebar Adjustment: The handlebar can be folded in a Z-shape for space-saving storage or transport (Illustration A1). It can also be adjusted to three different heights for comfortable operation (Illustration B1, E1).
  • Starting the Engine: For manual start, the safety control bar must be pressed and held, and the starter cable pulled rapidly (Illustration D, E). For electric start models, the ignition key is turned until the engine starts (Illustration P4). The engine runs at an optimal maximum speed for a clean cut.
  • Stopping the Engine: The engine is stopped by releasing the safety control bar (Illustration F). For electric start models, the ignition key should also be removed (Illustration P4). In an emergency, the engine and blade must stop within 3 seconds.
  • Cutting Height Adjustment: The cutting height is adjusted using a single-hand lever on the left side of the mower (Illustration I). The desired height is selected by pulling the lever out of its detent and moving it laterally.
  • Drive System (VARIO models): The rear wheel drive is engaged and disengaged using the drive control bar on the upper handlebar (Illustration G). The speed can be adjusted using a rotary knob on the left side of the handlebar, with settings from "Hare" (fast) to "Tortoise" (slow) (Illustration H).
  • Grass Collection: The lawnmower can be operated with a grass collector. A "TurboSignal" indicator on the collector shows when it is full (Illustration J, K), signaling the need for emptying (Illustration L).
  • Mulching: A mulch kit can be installed to convert the mower for mulching, where grass clippings are finely chopped and returned to the lawn as natural fertilizer. This eliminates the need for collecting and disposing of clippings.
  • Mowing on Slopes: The mower can be operated on slopes up to 25°. However, for safety, it is recommended not to exceed 15° for hand-guided lawnmowers. Mowing should be done across the slope, not up or down.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes numerous safety warnings, including keeping bystanders away, avoiding hot surfaces, proper fuel handling, wearing protective gear, and ensuring all safety devices are functional.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: The mower should be cleaned immediately after mowing. For cleaning, the mower can be tilted forwards with the spark plug pointing upwards (Illustration O) to prevent oil or fuel leakage. High-pressure cleaners or normal water jets should not be used on the drive area or engine parts.
  • Oil Change: The first oil change for a new engine is recommended after 5 operating hours, and thereafter every 50 operating hours or at least once per mowing season. Used oil must be disposed of according to local environmental regulations (Illustration Y1).
  • Air Filter Maintenance: The paper insert of the air filter should be cleaned every 25 operating hours or every three months, or replaced annually (Illustration W). The engine should never be run with the air filter removed.
  • Spark Plug Maintenance: The spark plug should be cleaned and the electrode gap set to 0.7 mm every 25 operating hours or every three months, and replaced annually (Illustration Y).
  • Blade Maintenance: The cutting blade should be checked for sharpness and secure attachment before each use. Sharpening and balancing of the blade must be performed by an authorized workshop (Illustration Q). Worn or damaged blades must be replaced with original spare parts.
  • Wheel Bearing Lubrication: The bearings of the front and rear wheels should be oiled once a year or every 50 operating hours (Illustration R).
  • Starter Battery Charging (Electro-Start models): The starter battery should be charged for approximately 24 hours before initial use and after each mowing season or long periods of non-use (Illustrations R4, X1, W1). Charging should be done indoors in dry rooms, away from direct sunlight.
  • Winter Storage: For long periods of non-use, the fuel tank should be emptied, the engine run until it stops, the spark plug disconnected, and the oil drained and replaced with fresh oil. The machine should be stored clean and dry, out of reach of children.
  • Troubleshooting: A comprehensive troubleshooting guide is provided to address common issues such as the engine not starting, loss of power, irregular running, drive not engaging, speed regulation problems, strong vibrations, and poor cutting results.
