ThefollowingprocedureshouldbefollowedtoadjustthestandingriggingonaSabre30
afterthemasthasbeenputinplacewithmediumtensiononallstays.
13:01THEVERTICALSIDETOSIDEPOSITION
ofthemastismeasuredbyusingthemain
halyardtodeterminethatthedistancefromthemastheadtobothtoerailsisequal.It
maybenecessarytoaddashortpieceofropetotheshackleendofthehalyardtoreach
firstonetoerailandthentheother.Adjusttheuppershroudturnbucklestocorrectany
leanofthemastrelativetothehull.
13:02THEUPPERSHROUD
turnbucklesshouldbeadjustedtoobtainareasonabledegreeof
tensionintheshrouds.Whilesailingata25degreeangleofheelthecorrectupper
shroudtensionwillallowtheleewardshroudtobereasonablyslackwithoutappreciable
tension,butnotsoloosethatismovesinthebreeze.Excessivelytightenedshroudswill
distorttheshapeofthehullandcouldcausestructuraldamage.
13:03THEFORESTAYANDBACKSTAY
shouldnextbeadjustedtobereasonablytight,but
withoutoverloadingthehullwhichcouldcausestructuraldamage.Whilesailingata25
degreeangleofheel,thecorrecttensionwillallowtheforestaytosagabout6"to8"
aftatmidheight.Allsailsarecuttoallowforapproximatelythisamountofsagin
theforestay.Equaladjustmentoftheforestayandbackstayturnbucklesshouldresultin
between6"to12"ofrakeaftatthemasthead,whichisnormal.Themastrakecanbe
determinedbyusingthemainhalyard.Tieaweighttotheshackleandmeasurethe
distancefromtheweighttotheaftedgeofthemast.Thiswillgiveyoutherake,
expressedininches.
13:04THELOWERSHROUDS
shouldnextbeadjustedtoobtainastraightmast,sideto
side,ata25degreeangleofheel.Thiswillresultinthelowershroudsbeingabout
halfastightastheuppersbeforeyoustarttosail.Ifthelowersaretootight,the
mastwillcurvetoweatheratmidheight.Iftheyaretooloose,themastwillsagto
leewardatmidheight.
13:05THEFORWARDLOWERSHROUDS
shouldnextbeadjustedtogiveapproximately2"to3"
ofcurveorprebendforwardatmidheightofthemast,whilemaintainingstraightside
tosidepositionofthemastper(4)above.Toachievethiseffect,itwillbenecessary
toloosentheaftlowershroudsslightlyastheforwardlowershroudsarebeingtightened
andviceversa.Whenthemastisproperlytuned,theaftlowershroudswillbealittle
looserthantheforwardlowershroudsandconsiderablylooserthantheuppershrouds.

13:06CHECK:Besurethatallturnbuckles,togglesandclevispinsaresecuredwith
cotterpinsthatareproperlybentbackandtaped.
13:07CAUTION
:Themajorityofmastfailuresarecausedbyimproperlyadjustedrigging
thatallowsthemasttobendmorethan3"sideways,or6"foreanaftatmidheight,
puttingthemastoutofcolumn.Failurecanalsobecausedbyimproperlyplacedor
missingcotterpins.
13:08JIFFYREEFING
:AllSabreyachtsareequippedwithtwosetsofjiffyreefinggear
asstandardequipment.
Toreef,easeoffthemainhalyardandhookthereeftackgrommettothehookononeside
ofthegooseneck.Restorepropermainhalyardtension.Pullinthereeflineuntil
propertensionisachievedonthereefclew.Neatlyfurlthefootofthesailandtieit
offalongtheboom.
