:Thestuffingboxiscriticaltoyourboat'ssafetyand
performance.Itdependsonanageoldmethodofusingwaximpregnatedflaxcordtocreate
awaterbarrierthatselflubricatesbyallowingwatertopassthroughatacontrolled
rate.Therateofwaterpassageshouldbeinspectedfrequentlytoensureproper
performance.(RefertoI11)
Thestuffingboxisconnectedtotheshaftlogtubebymeansofaflexiblerubbertube
heldinplacebyhoseclamps.Theclampsshouldbetightatalltimesandnowatershould
passfromthislocation.
Aslightdripfromthestuffingboxatthelocationwheretheshaftexitsisacceptable
andnecessaryforcoolingandlubrication.Oneortwodropseverythirtysecondswhile
theengineisrunningisaverage.Excessivedrippingshouldbeattendedtobyloosening
thelocknutandtighteningtheglandnut1/4turn,thensecureagainwithlocknut.If
excessiveleakingcontinuesafteradjustingtheglandnutandrunningtheenginefor
severalhours,newpackingisindicated.
Packingmustbereplacedwiththeboatoutofthewater.Loosenthelocknut,removethe
glandnutandpullouttheoldpacking.Cutapieceof1/4inchpacking,availableat
marinestores,101/2incheslongandwrapitfirmlyaroundtheshaftjustabovethe
stuffingbox.Replacetheglandnut,tighten1/4turnpasthandtightandlockwiththe
locknut.Aftertheboatislaunched,runengineandobservestuffingboxleakage.

17:05PROPELLERREMOVAL
:Forfoldingandsolidpropellers,awheelpullerorpropeller
pullerisrequired.
Forafoldingpropeller,removeallcotterpinsfromthepivotandshaftnut.Knockout
thebladepivotpinwiththepunchandhammer.Removeblades.Removeshaftnut,whichis
countersunkintothepropellerhub,withasocketdriveextension.
Forsolidpropellers,removethecotterpinandbackoffthelocknuts.Thepullershaft
shouldrestdirectlyontheendofthepropellershaft,andbeinstalledstraightand
centered.Tappingthepropellerwithasofthammerorblockofwoodwillhelploosena
propellerwhichisstuck.
17:06PROPELLERINSTALLATION
:Thoroughlychecktheinsideofthepropellerhub,
shaft,keywayandkeyfordirt,corrosionandburrs.Assemblepartsontotheshaftwith
thekeywayontheshaftandpropellerinline.Thekeyshouldfitsnuglyatthesides
withaslightclearanceatthetop.Tightenlockingnutsandinstallcotterpin.
17:07PROPELLERSHAFT
:Thepropellershaftissolidbronzeandissupportedbythe
enginecouplingandanoutboardstrutholdingarubbercutlassbearing.Unobstructed
waterflowisessentialtogoodbearinglifeandtodissipateheat.Checkallbearing
slotsforobstructionsatlaunchtime.Donotapplybottompainttotheforwardoraft
