17:01OFFSETPROPELLERS
:Sabreyachtsarebuiltwithpropellershaftsoffsettoport
orstarboarddependingonenginerotation.Engineswithclockwiserotation(righthand)
haveshaftsoffsettoport.
Afterextensiveresearchitwasfoundthatforthishulltypeanoffsetpropeller
benefitedengineperformanceandhandlingcharacteristics.
Sabreruddersarepartiallybalancedwiththeruddershaftabout15%aftofitsleading
edge.Thisfeaturereducestheloadonthehelmandmakesitmorecomfortabletohold
whileundersail.Thepowerfulwashofacenterlinepropellercausesthehelmtoveerto
onesideortheotherafteraturnisinitiated.Theoffsetpropellerwashtoflowto
thesideoftherudder.Asecondbenefitisthattheanglebetweentheshaftandthefore
andaftaxisoftheboatislessthanwouldbepossiblewithacenterlineinstalledshaft.
17:02ENGINEALIGNMENT
:Enginealignmentsshouldbecarriedoutbyexperiencedmarine
servicepersonnel.Whilewedonotrecommendthatyouattemptalignmentyourself,there
followsabriefdescriptionsothatyoumaybecomefamiliarwiththeprocedureandbetter
understanditsimportance.(RefertoI09)
Carefulalignmentiscriticaltotheperformanceoftheauxiliaryengine.Anarrayof
problemsfromexcessivevibrationandnoisetoextensivewearofenginepartsmayoccuras
aresultofmisalignment.
Enginesmustbeproperlyandexactlyalignedwiththepropellershaft.Theengineis
alignedwhenfirstinstalledthendisconnectedfortransportationandlaunching.Boats
maychangeshapeveryslightlyuponlaunchingandrigging.Itisthereforenecessaryto
aligntheenginetotheshaftafterlaunching,rigging,andtuning.Preferablyfueland
watertanksshouldbeabouthalffullandtheusualequipmentonboardsotheloaddoes
notdrasticallychange.
Afeelergaugeisusedtocheckthatthecouplingflangescomeexactlytogetheratall
points.Ifthecouplingsaremisalignedtheengineisshifterbytilting,lowering,
raising,andturninguntilthecouplingflangesmeetevenlyinallpositionswithoutusing
force.

theshafthalfcouplingrotatedin90degreestagescheckingthegapateachturn.This
willalsocheckwhethertheshafthalfcouplingisinalignmentonitsshaft,withits
faceperpendiculartothecenterlineaxisoftheshaft,ormayindicateabentpropeller
