immediatelycheckthefollowing:
1.Checkfornormaloilpressure.Shutdownengineifnormaloilpressureisnot
presentwithin15secondsofstarting.
2.Checkimmediatelyforseawaterflowthroughthetransomexhaustport.
3.Ifoilhasjustbeenchanged,stoptheengineandcheckcrankcaseoillevel.This
isimportantasitmaybenecessarytoaddoiltocompensateforoilwhichfillsinternal
oilpassagesandtheoilfilter.
4.Iftransmissionfluidhasjustbeenchanged,checkthislevelalso.
5.Beawareofengineoperatingtemperatureperiodicallyduringoperation.
CAUTION
:NEVERSHUTOFFBATTERYSWITCHWHILETHEENGINEISRUNNINGASSERIOUSALTERNATOR
DAMAGEWILLRESULT.
16:04STOPPINGTHEENGINE
:Beforestoppingtheengineitshouldbeallowedtoidlefor
afewminuteswhileinneutral.Thiswillhelpdissipatesomeoftheheatfrom
operation.
16:05OILCHANGE
:Changeoilandotherenginefluidsaccordingtotherecommendations
intheengineowner'smanual.Checkoilinthereversegeartoavoiddamagetothegears
andincreaseclutchlife.WarminguptheengineasdescribedinSection16:06,before
drainingtheoilwillfacilitateclutchlife.
16:06ENGINECONDENSATION
:Atalltimes,regardlessoffrequencyofoperation,itis
notgoodpracticetooperatetheengineforonlyashortperiodoftime.Wheneverthe
engineisuseditshouldbekeptrunningforatleast15minutesafterithaswarmedupto
fulloperatingtemperature.Usingtheengineforjustafewminutesdoesnotwarmthe
enginesufficientlytoovercomenormalcondensation,especiallyincoldweather.
Thiswillresultininternalcorrosionoftheengine,andisthemaincauseofsticky
valves.Theenginewarrantydoesnotcoverthismisuseoftheengine.
16:07ENGINELAYUP
:Iftheengineisnotusedforamonthorso,itiswellto"Fog"
theenginewithoilthroughtheairintake,andtoplaceoilinthecylindersasdescribed
intheenginemanual.Thisisnecessarytoovercometheeffectsofsaltairbackingup
theexhaustsystemsandintothecylindersthroughanopenexhaustvalve.

16:08ENGINECLEANOUT:Itisrecommendedpracticetooccasionallyruntheengineat
fullpowerforaminimumoffiveminutestocleanoutmoistureandcarbonaccumulations.
16:09CRUISINGSPEED
:Aonethirdthrottlesettingwillprovideacruisingspeedof5
1/2knots;whereasfullthrottlewillprovideamaximumspeedofonlyjustover6knots
duetothehullspeedlimitationsofaboatthissize.Donotabusetheengineandthe
boatbydrivingtheengineexcessivelyhard.
16:10SHIFTLEVERLOCATION
:VolvoenginesshouldbeleftinforwardandWesterbeke
enginesshouldbeleftinreversewhensailing.Alwaysleaveengineinneutralwhennot
sailingandduringwinterstorage.
16:11FOLDINGPROPELLERS
:Puttingthegearshiftleverintoforwardorreverseshould
onlybedonewhiletheengineisidling.ChanginggearathigherR.P.M.cancausedamage
becauseofthegreatstresswhichoccurswhenthebladesfoldout.If,afterengagingthe
engineinforward,unusualvibrationsoccurs,itmaybecausedfromonepropellerblade
remainingclosedorpartlyopened.Ifthisoccurs,shiftintoreverseatidlespeedsand
accelerateslightlyifpossible.Thisshouldfreethebladesforuse.(RefertoSection
