Overview

The Saitek Competition Pro Game Clock (Gray Model) is a specialized digital timer designed for competitive games, likely chess or similar two-player board games, where precise timekeeping is crucial. Its primary function is to manage the time allotted to each player, ensuring fair play and adherence to game rules. The device features a clear digital display that shows the remaining time for each player, with a layout that makes it easy to monitor both timers simultaneously.

Function Description

The core function of the Saitek Competition Pro Game Clock is to provide accurate and customizable time control for two players. It allows users to set specific time limits, including initial game time and delay periods, which are essential for various game formats. The clock operates by alternating between players' timers, typically activated by a physical button press on the player's side, which stops their clock and starts their opponent's.

The device supports multiple operating modes, referred to as "A modes" (e.g., 1A, 2A, 6A, 7B), each likely corresponding to different time control presets or customizable settings. These modes allow for flexibility in adapting the clock to various tournament rules or personal preferences. The ability to select specific modes, such as "mode 6A" or "mode 7B," indicates a sophisticated control system that can handle different timing scenarios, including those with incremental time additions or specific delay settings.

A key feature is the "edit mode," which enables users to modify the timing parameters. In this mode, specific digits on the display blink, indicating they are ready for adjustment. This allows for precise setting of game duration, such as "1:30" (90 minutes) for each side, and delay periods, like "05" (5 seconds). The device also incorporates a "STORE" function, allowing users to save their customized settings into a user mode (e.g., 7B) for quick recall in future games. This is particularly useful for players who frequently use specific time controls and want to avoid re-entering settings repeatedly.

The clock also includes basic control features such as "on/off," "sound," and "light" settings, managed by buttons at the bottom and a slider. These allow players to customize the clock's operational environment, for instance, by turning off sounds for silent play or adjusting light settings for visibility. The "PAUSE" button serves a dual purpose: to temporarily halt the game clock and, when pressed for an extended period (three seconds), to reset the clock and initiate play. This reset function is crucial for starting new games or correcting errors during setup.

Usage Features

Operating the Saitek Competition Pro Game Clock involves a series of intuitive steps, primarily using a 4-way control pad and dedicated buttons.

To begin, the clock is turned on using a switch, presumably located underneath the device. Once powered, the user can select the desired operating mode. This is done by navigating through the "A modes" using the up/down arrow buttons on the 4-way pad. The display will show the selected mode, such as "6A." If the display shows “-.-- -.--,” it indicates a general selection state, from which specific modes can be chosen. The left/right arrow buttons on the 4-way pad are used to cycle through different mode numbers (e.g., 1-7), while the up/down arrows are used to select specific sub-modes (e.g., A, B, C).

Entering "edit mode" is achieved by pressing the "EDIT" button. Once in edit mode, the digit to be modified will blink, guiding the user. The 4-way control pad then becomes the primary interface for making adjustments:

  • UP/DOWN arrows: These buttons are used to increase or decrease the value of the blinking digit. This allows for precise setting of minutes, seconds, or delay values.
  • LEFT/RIGHT arrows: These buttons are used to move the cursor across the display, cycling through the different digits or settings that can be modified. This enables users to adjust various parts of the time setting, such as hours, minutes, seconds, and delay.

After setting the desired time for each side (e.g., 1:30 for 90 minutes) and the delay (e.g., 05 for 5 seconds), the settings can be saved. This is an optional but highly recommended step, especially for frequently used time controls. Pressing the "STORE" button initiates the saving process. During this, a "STORE" indicator on the left LCD will highlight, and the "Timer Mode Indicator" will flash. The user then selects a "user mode" (e.g., 7B) using the up/down arrows and presses "STORE" again to confirm and save the settings. This allows for quick recall of customized time controls without needing to re-enter them every time.

To start a game or reset the clock, the "PAUSE" button is pressed and held for three seconds. This action clears any previous timing and prepares the clock for a new game, initiating play according to the selected and saved settings.

The device also features basic environmental controls. Buttons at the bottom allow for toggling sound and light features. A slider provides further control over these settings, with options such as "LIGHTS OFF SOUNDS OFF" for a completely silent and discreet operation, or other combinations like "OFF / GO / SOUND OFF / LIGHTS OFF SOUND OFF" which suggests different states of operation and notification.

Maintenance Features

The provided manual does not explicitly detail maintenance features in the traditional sense (e.g., cleaning instructions, battery replacement). However, based on the operational descriptions, some aspects can be inferred:

  • Power Management: The mention of an "on/off switch underneath the clock" suggests that the device is likely battery-operated, requiring users to manage battery life. While not explicitly stated, typical maintenance for such devices would involve replacing batteries when they run low. The location of the switch underneath implies a design choice for a clean top surface, but also means the device might need to be lifted to access the power control.
  • Durability and Handling: The "Competition Pro" designation implies a robust design suitable for frequent use in competitive environments. While no specific material or construction details are provided, a competitive clock is expected to withstand repeated button presses and occasional handling during setup and transport.
  • Software/Firmware (Implied): The existence of multiple modes (1A, 2A, 6A, 7B) and the ability to save user-defined settings suggest an internal firmware or software system. While users cannot directly maintain this software, the clear instructions for mode selection and setting storage indicate a stable and user-friendly interface that minimizes the need for technical intervention.
  • Reset Functionality: The "PAUSE button for three seconds to reset and start play" acts as a soft reset for the timing mechanism. This is a crucial "maintenance" feature from a user's perspective, allowing for quick recovery from incorrect settings or preparing for a new game without needing to power cycle the device.

In summary, the Saitek Competition Pro Game Clock is a user-centric device designed for precision time management in competitive games. Its strength lies in its customizable settings, intuitive control interface, and the ability to save preferred time controls, making it a reliable tool for serious players and tournament organizers. While explicit maintenance instructions are not detailed, its design implies a focus on operational reliability and ease of use.
