The DPR-69+ is a portable digital radio designed for both DAB+ and FM RDS reception, offering a versatile listening experience. Its compact design and multiple power options make it suitable for use at home or on the go.
The primary function of the DPR-69+ is to provide high-quality radio reception across both DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting) and FM (Frequency Modulation) bands. For DAB+ reception, the radio automatically scans for available stations in the Band III channels (5A - 13F) and compiles a station list. Users can then scroll through this list and select their desired station. The radio supports secondary services, which are additional programs associated with a primary station, indicated by ">>" next to the station name. The display offers various modes to show information such as scrolling text (artist/track name, phone numbers), program type (Pop, Classic, News), multiplex name, current time and date, frequency of the DAB multiplex, bit rate and audio type, and signal strength. This comprehensive information helps users stay informed about the broadcast.
For FM reception, the radio allows for both auto-tuning and manual tuning. In auto-tune mode, the radio scans the FM band (87.5-108 MHz) upwards or downwards, stopping when it finds a station with sufficient strength. If RDS (Radio Data System) information is available, the display will show the radio station name, "St" for stereo, and "RDS" to indicate the presence of RDS data. In manual tuning mode, users can precisely adjust the frequency in 50kHz steps. Similar to DAB+, the FM display modes provide information like radio text, program type, time and date, and frequency, provided RDS information is available from the broadcaster.
The DPR-69+ also features a Dynamic Range Control (DRC) setting for DAB+. This function helps make quieter sounds easier to hear in noisy environments by adjusting the audio dynamics. Users can choose between DRC off (0), DRC as sent by the broadcaster (1), or DRC at half the broadcaster's level (1/2).
To enhance user convenience, the radio includes a preset function, allowing users to store up to 5 favorite stations for each waveband (DAB+ and FM). These presets can be easily recalled with a momentary press of the corresponding preset button.
For private listening, a 3.5mm headphone socket is provided. Plugging in headphones automatically mutes the internal loudspeaker.
The DPR-69+ is designed for ease of use with clearly labeled controls on the front panel. These include a speaker, Band button (to switch between DAB+ and FM), Auto Tune button (for automatic station scanning), Info button (to cycle through display modes), Volume Up/Down buttons, On/Off button, Tuning Up/Down buttons, Select button (for confirming selections), and Preset buttons.
The radio offers flexible power options. It can be powered by four LR6 (AA size) alkaline batteries for portable use or by rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries. An AC adaptor is also supplied for mains power, which takes precedence over batteries when connected. The battery compartment has a switch to select between "Alkaline" and "NiMH" battery types, which is crucial for proper operation and charging. When using rechargeable batteries with the AC adaptor, the radio can charge the batteries, indicated by a flashing green light that turns steady green when fully charged.
A Lock switch on the side of the radio prevents unintentional operation, making it ideal for travel or when the radio is stored in a bag. When activated, the power and all buttons are disabled.
The display backlight behavior varies depending on the power source. When running on batteries, the backlight illuminates for approximately 12 seconds after any button press to conserve power. When powered by AC mains, the display backlight remains continuously on while the radio is switched on.
The radio's auto-scan function for FM can be adjusted for sensitivity. Users can choose between "Local" and "Distant" scan zones. The "Distant" option allows the radio to find weaker signals from more distant transmitters, which can be useful in areas with poor reception.
Proper maintenance of the DPR-69+ primarily involves careful handling of its power sources and general care.
For battery operation, it is critical to set the internal battery switch to the correct type (Alkaline or NiMH) to prevent damage to the batteries or the radio. When using alkaline batteries, it's recommended to remove them if the radio will not be used for an extended period. For rechargeable NiMH batteries, the radio is designed to charge them only when switched off and connected to the AC adaptor. It's advised to use a set of quality rechargeable batteries (at least 2000mAh capacity) from the same brand and age, and to charge and discharge them together for optimal performance and longevity. If the radio is to be stored for several weeks, fully charging the rechargeable batteries beforehand is recommended.
The manual provides important warnings regarding battery safety, including not mixing old and new batteries, not mixing different battery types, and not exposing batteries to excessive heat. It also advises on safe disposal of batteries.
In case of operational issues, such as incorrect display or malfunction, the radio features a "System reset" function. This procedure, accessed through the Info button, allows users to perform a full reset, which will erase all presets and station lists, and then initiate a new scan of the DAB band. This can resolve issues caused by electrostatic discharge or other software glitches.
General care includes protecting the radio from water, steam, sand, and excessive heat, such as direct sunlight or being left in a parked car. It is recommended to maintain a minimum distance of 10cm from adjacent objects to ensure good ventilation and prevent overheating. The ventilation openings should not be blocked by items like newspapers or curtains. No naked flame sources should be placed on the product.
