Overview

This manual describes the installation, care, and maintenance of a composite balustrade kit from Savoy Timber, designed for DIY enthusiasts. The balustrade system is intended to provide a decorative and safety barrier for outdoor spaces, such as decks, and is characterized by its low-maintenance requirements.

Function Description:

The composite balustrade serves as a protective and aesthetic railing system for outdoor decking areas. It is designed to create a secure perimeter, preventing falls from elevated surfaces while enhancing the visual appeal of the space. The system comprises several key components that work together to form a robust and stable barrier. These include posts, post caps, top and bottom rails, spindles, infills, rail connectors, rail supports, post skirts, galvanised post supports, and stainless steel screws. The posts provide the primary structural support, anchored to the subframe or decking. The top and bottom rails connect the posts, forming the framework within which the spindles and infills are secured. Spindles are vertical elements that fill the space between the rails, contributing to both safety and design. Infills are smaller pieces used to complete the rail sections and post connections. Rail connectors and supports facilitate the secure attachment of the rails to the posts and ensure proper spacing and alignment of the spindles. Post skirts are decorative elements that conceal the fixing bolts at the base of the posts, providing a clean and finished look. Galvanised post supports and stainless steel screws are essential for anchoring the system and ensuring its long-term stability and resistance to environmental factors. The entire system is engineered for ease of assembly, making it suitable for DIY installation.

Usage Features:

The Savoy Timber composite balustrade is designed for straightforward installation, offering two primary methods: Surface Mounting and Through Post System.

  1. Surface Mounting: In this method, the balustrades are placed directly on top of the decking boards after the decking is built using steel posts. They are then fixed directly to the subframe. This approach is suitable when the decking structure is already in place and provides a stable base for the balustrade.
  2. Through Post System: This method involves installing the posts as part of the subframe. The posts are built directly into the subframe and secured using coach bolts in multiple directions. A double-beam construction is recommended for optimal composite post housing in this system. It's important to note that Savoy Timber's balustrades are not intended for use as columns, support posts, beams, joist stringers, or other primary load-bearing members. This system provides a more integrated and potentially stronger connection to the overall structure.

The installation process is broken down into several steps to guide the user:

  • Step 1: Position the first post, ensuring it is vertically straight. Mark and drill holes for fixing bolts.
  • Step 2: Position the second post, ensuring it is vertically straight and the distance between post centers is no more than 1600mm. Mark and drill holes for fixing bolts.
  • Step 3: Slide the composite newel posts over the steel insert posts, ensuring they are straight. The composite posts can be cut to length if necessary.
  • Step 4: Once the composite post is in place, slide the post skirt over the top of the post to conceal the fixing bolts.
  • Step 5: Fix two rail supports to the underside of the bottom rail using the provided square plastic connectors.
  • Step 6: Slide the first infill piece (105mm long) into the bottom rail, then add a rail connector, repeating this process until the entire rail is complete. The first and last dimensions may vary. Before inserting the final infill, ensure the rail connector is securely fastened to the bottom rail by drilling a pilot hole (30mm in from the end, in the center of the channel) and screwing it in place. For a standard length of 1486mm, 10 spindles are typically needed.
  • Step 7: Slide the prepared bottom rail into the channels on the post using the rail supports until it sits securely on the infill, 95mm from the finished floor level.
  • Step 8: Position the 10 spindles over the rail supports. Prepare the top rail similarly to the bottom rail, but without adding rail supports. Slide an infill piece into each side of the post where the rails fit, cut to a standard length of 845mm. Slide the prepared top rail into position, ensuring connectors fit within the spindles.
  • Step 9: After pre-drilling a hole in the post, use a screw directly on top of the rail connector to hold the top rail in position and add stability to the system.
  • Step 10: Slide an infill piece into the post, repeating the process on the other post.
  • Step 11: Once all infill pieces are level and satisfactory, place the post caps on the posts to complete the balustrade.

The manual emphasizes the importance of adhering to applicable building codes and consulting local authorities if in doubt, as local requirements always supersede suggested procedures. The balustrade is not designed for load-bearing applications.

Maintenance Features:

The composite balustrade is designed for low maintenance, but regular care ensures it remains in optimal condition.

  • Periodic Cleaning: For routine cleaning, a soft bristle brush, mild soap, and warm water dilution are recommended. This helps remove dirt and grime that can accumulate over time, keeping the balustrade looking fresh.
  • Power Washing: If using a power washer, it is crucial to stand at least one meter away from the area being cleaned to prevent damage. The spray should be directed in the direction of the grain to avoid damaging the decking or balustrade surface. Always follow the safety precautions provided with the power washer.
  • Harder to Clean Areas: For stubborn stains or areas where the balustrade may have been damaged, 400-grit sandpaper is recommended. Lightly sand the balustrade in the same direction as the grain to minimize visible marks. After sanding, thoroughly rinse the area with water to remove any residue. This method helps restore the surface appearance without causing further damage.

By following these simple maintenance guidelines, users can ensure their Savoy Timber composite balustrade retains its aesthetic appeal and structural integrity for many years.
