Thank you for purchasing a Sealey product. Manufactured to a high standard, this product will, if used according to these instructions,
and properly maintained, give you years of trouble free performance.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. NOTE THE SAFE OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS, WARNINGS & CAUTIONS. USE
THE PRODUCT CORRECTLY AND WITH CARE FOR THE PURPOSE FOR WHICH IT IS INTENDED. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY CAUSE DAMAGE AND/OR
PERSONAL INJURY AND WILL INVALIDATE THE WARRANTY. KEEP THESE INSTRUCTIONS SAFE FOR FUTURE USE.
1. SAFETY
DANGER! - BE AWARE, LEAD-ACID BATTERIES GENERATE EXPLOSIVE GASES DURING NORMAL BATTERY OPERATION.
FOR THIS REASON IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO READ AND FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY, EACH TIME YOU USE THE
CONVERTER BOX AND ASSOCIATED EqUIPMENT Follow these instructions and those published by the battery manufacturer and
the maker of any equipment you intend to use in the vicinity of the battery. Remember to review warning marks on all products and on
engines.
1.1. PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS
9 Ensure there is another person within hearing range and close enough to come to your aid should a problem arise when working near
a lead-acid battery.
9 Wear safety eye protection and protective clothing. Avoid touching eyes while working near battery.
9 Have fresh water and soap nearby in case battery acid contacts skin, clothing, or eyes.
9 Washimmediatelywithsoapandwaterifbatteryacidcontactsskinorclothing.Ifacidenterseye,usheyeimmediatelywithcool,
clean running water for at least 15 minutes and seek immediate medical attention.
9 Remove personal metallic items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces and watches. A lead-acid battery can produce a short circuit
current high enough to weld a ring or the like to metal and may cause severe burns.
9 Ensure hands, clothing (especially belts) are clear of fan blades and other moving or hot parts of engine, remove ties and contain
long hair.
8 DO NOT smokeorallowaspark,orame,inthevicinityofbattery,engineorfuelinjectionpump.

DO NOT be tempted to touch an apparently stationary component which is, in fact, rotating.
WARNING! When ignition is on DO NOT touch any ignition components - very high voltages are present.
1.2. GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING! When running an engine in an enclosed space ensure adequate ventilation or ducted exhaust. Exhaust gases kill.
9 Keep children and unauthorised persons away from the working area.
9 Ensure vehicle transmission is in ‘Neutral’ (manual) or ‘Park’ (automatic) and the parking brake is applied.
9 Ensure the ignition is switched off before attaching the power clamps to the battery.
9 Keep tools and other items away from the engine and ensure that you can see the battery and working parts of engine clearly.
9 If the battery terminals are corroded or dirty, clean them before attaching any clamps.
WARNING! DO NOT allow metal tools or equipment to accidentally touch battery terminals since this may produce sparks or a short
circuit resulting in an explosion.
8 DO NOT cross-connect leads from the converter box to the battery. Ensure positive (+) (RED) is to positive and negative (-) BLACK
is to negative. If the battery symbols cannot be distinguished, the negative terminal is normally the one directly connected to the
vehicle bodywork (check vehicle hand-book).
8 DO NOT allow inductive pick-up, or leads, to contact exhaust or other engine parts as the heat will cause damage.
8 DO NOT pull the cable or clamps from the battery terminals.
8 DO NOT use the converter box in damp, or wet locations.
8 DO NOToperatewithinthevicinityofammableliquidsorgases.

Overview

The Sealey TL95 is a diesel converter box designed to detect pulses from the fuel pipes of diesel fuel injectors, enabling the use of standard timing lights, engine analyzers, and multi-meters with inductive pick-ups on diesel engines. It is suitable for most direct injection diesel engines equipped with 6mm (1/4") to 10mm (3/8") external fuel pipes.

Function Description:

The primary function of the TL95 is to convert the mechanical pulse generated by fuel flowing through a diesel injector pipe into an electrical signal that can be read by an inductive pick-up device. This allows for accurate engine timing and RPM measurement on diesel engines, which typically lack the spark plug ignition systems that conventional timing lights rely on. The device works by clamping a Piezo sensor onto the fuel pipe, which detects the pressure wave created by fuel injection. This signal is then processed by the converter box and outputted through a pick-up loop, where an inductive pick-up from a timing light or other monitoring device can be attached. An indicator light on the converter box provides visual confirmation of a consistent signal.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model No.: TL95
  • Input Power: 6-30V DC (powered directly from the vehicle battery)
  • Trigger Point: 15% of the highest pressure in the injector pipe, ensuring a reliable trigger from the fuel injection pulse.
  • Clamp Size: Compatible with fuel pipes ranging from 6mm (1/4") to 10mm (3/8") in diameter.
  • Components: The system includes a black battery clamp (NEG-), a red battery clamp (POS+), a pick-up loop for inductive pick-ups, an indicator light, a Piezo clamp (diesel sensor), a power lead, a black clip (sensor lead), a yellow clip (sensor lead), and a sensor lead.

Usage Features:

  • Compatibility: Designed to work with most timing lights, engine analyzers, and multi-meters that utilize an inductive pick-up.
  • Diesel Engine Application: Specifically engineered for direct injection diesel engines, bridging the gap for diagnostic tools typically used on petrol engines.
  • RPM Measurement: Enables the reading of RPM on monitoring devices, crucial for tasks like setting a constant engine speed for diesel engine smoke testing.
  • Easy Setup: The Piezo clamp attaches to a straight section of the injector fuel pipe, ideally on the No.1 cylinder and as close to the pump as possible for the strongest reading.
  • Visual Feedback: An indicator light on the converter box flashes consistently when a signal is detected, aiding in troubleshooting connections or clamp placement.
  • Battery Powered: Draws power directly from the vehicle's 6-30V DC battery, making it self-sufficient during operation.
  • Safety Features: Includes clear instructions for safe operation, emphasizing the importance of eye protection, protective clothing, and precautions when working with lead-acid batteries and rotating engine parts. It warns against touching ignition components when the ignition is on due to high voltages and highlights the danger of exhaust gases in enclosed spaces.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: The Piezo clamp and fuel pipe should be clean and dry before attachment to ensure optimal contact and signal detection.
  • Connection Checks: If the indicator light does not flash, users are advised to check all connections and potentially relocate the Piezo clamp to another section of the fuel pipe.
  • Battery Condition: Notes that a low vehicle battery, defective injector pump, or lack of fuel can prevent the indicator light from flashing, suggesting these as potential diagnostic points.
  • Durability: Manufactured to a high standard, promising years of trouble-free performance if used according to instructions and properly maintained.
  • Warranty: Comes with a 12-month guarantee from the purchase date, requiring proof of purchase for any claim.
  • Parts Support: Sealey provides parts support, with contact information for obtaining parts listings and diagrams, as well as for sales and technical inquiries.
  • Environmental Responsibility: Instructions for environmentally sound disposal of unwanted materials, tools, accessories, and packaging, as well as fluids, are provided. It also adheres to WEEE regulations for the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment at the end of its working life.
