Overview

This document provides a quick start guide for the Secure Camper Motorhome Wi-Fi system, specifically the CAT12 (ZTE MF986D) CA12b model. It covers the installation of the antenna, the router, and initial setup procedures, including connecting devices to the Wi-Fi and changing router settings.

Function Description

The Secure Camper Motorhome Wi-Fi system is designed to provide internet connectivity within a motorhome or similar vehicle. It utilizes a CAT12 (ZTE MF986D) CA12b router, which connects to mobile networks via a SIM card to create a Wi-Fi hotspot. The system includes an external antenna to enhance signal reception, ensuring reliable internet access even in areas with weaker mobile network coverage. The router supports multiple devices connecting simultaneously and offers features like signal strength indication, internet connection status, roaming status, SMS message notifications, and battery charge status. It can be managed and configured through a dedicated mobile application, the ZTE Link App, which allows users to monitor data usage, change Wi-Fi settings, and perform network diagnostics.

Usage Features

Antenna Installation: The system offers two primary antenna installation methods: Magnetic/Self-Adhesive Mount and Through the Roof/Spigot Mount.

  • Magnetic/Self-Adhesive Mount: This method is simpler and involves removing the spigot mount from the antenna and attaching a magnetic mount with four screws. After cleaning the desired location on the motorhome roof, the antenna can be placed magnetically or, for a self-adhesive option, a double-sided foam pad is used to firmly apply the antenna. This method is ideal for users who prefer a non-permanent installation or do not wish to drill into their roof.

  • Through the Roof/Spigot Mount: This method provides a more permanent and secure installation. The antenna should be mounted at least 50cm away from heat sources, ensuring there is access from the inside of the motorhome where the cable will pass through. A drill template is provided to mark the location, and tape is recommended to prevent the drill from slipping. A 20mm drill bit or hole cutter is used to create a hole through the roof. A self-adhesive foam ring is applied to the roof for sealing. The cable is then slid through the hole, and the antenna is firmly pressed onto the self-adhesive pad. From the inside, a threaded nut is slid over the wire and onto the spigot mount, then tightened securely. The kit includes two depths of spigot (10mm and 50mm) to accommodate different roof thicknesses.

Router Installation: The router installation involves several steps to ensure proper functionality and secure placement.

  1. SIM Card Insertion: Gently open the back cover of the router by pulling it away from the bottom left corner. The battery should be pulled out first. A nano-sized SIM card is then inserted into the silver SIM card slot. The SIM card should be face down, with the gold connectors downwards and the notch oriented as shown in the manual. After inserting the SIM, the battery is re-inserted, and the back cover is clipped on.

  2. Mounting the Router: The router is designed to be mounted using a bracket, which can be secured with screws or self-adhesive pads. When choosing a location, it's crucial to ensure that the antenna cables can reach the router from both above and below. The antenna covers on the top and bottom of the router should be gently opened and left open; they are not to be removed as they remain loosely connected.

  3. Connecting Power and Antennas: The power adapter, which connects via a USB cable to a cigarette lighter style connector in the vehicle, is plugged into the router. The router is then slid into its mounting bracket. The USB-C power connector is inserted. Finally, the external antenna cables are connected to the top and bottom antenna connectors on the router, requiring a firm push to ensure a secure connection.

Router Configuration and Device Connection: Once installed, the router needs to be configured and devices connected.

  1. Powering On: Press and hold the power button on the top left of the router for a few seconds to switch it on. The router's display will show 'Welcome', then 'Connecting', and finally the network name of the SIM card in use.

  2. Status Icons: The router's display will show various icons indicating its status:

    • 4G Signal Strength: Indicates the strength of the mobile network signal.
    • Connected to Internet: Shows if the router has an active internet connection.
    • Roaming Signal Strength: Indicates if the router is currently roaming on another network.
    • SMS Message (no. of): Displays the number of unread SMS messages.
    • Wi-Fi (no. of device on): Shows how many devices are currently connected to the Wi-Fi network.
    • Battery Charge Status: Indicates the current battery level. The router automatically connects to the internet for most mobile networks, and a connection icon (N) should be visible.
  3. Connecting Devices to Wi-Fi: A label on the front of the router provides the default network name (SSID), typically in the format "ZTE_xxxxxx", and an 8-digit numeric password. To connect a device, users can either manually enter these details into their device's Wi-Fi settings or scan the QR code on the label with their device camera and click 'Join'.

Changing Router Settings (Optional Step): For advanced management and personalization, users can download the ZTE Link App, available on iOS and Google Play.

  1. App Connection: Connect to the router's Wi-Fi network, then open the ZTE Link App. Log in using the default administration password found on the label on the rear of the router. Users will need to accept the privacy policy.

  2. Wi-Fi Name and Password Change: The app may prompt users to change the default Wi-Fi name and password. It's important to note that changing these details will render the Secure Camper QR code label non-functional for future connections. To change the Wi-Fi name or password later, tap 'Toolkit' at the bottom of the app interface, then select 'Wi-Fi settings'. Here, users can enter a new network name (SSID) and/or a new password. The password must be between 8 and 63 characters long.

  3. Admin Password Change: To change the administrator password for the app, tap 'MORE' in the app, then 'Password Management'. Users will need to enter the old password, then the new password (5 to 32 characters long), and confirm it.

  4. Location Sharing and Notifications: Users can choose whether to share their location and/or allow notifications from the app.

Maintenance Features

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting section for common issues, particularly if the connection icon shows red, indicating a problem with the internet connection.

  1. SIM Card and Data Allowance: The first step is to verify that the SIM card is correctly installed and has an active data allowance. Without a valid SIM or data, the router cannot connect to the mobile network.

  2. Antenna/Motorhome Placement: If signal issues persist, users are advised to move the antennas or the entire motorhome to a different location. This helps determine if the problem is related to poor mobile network signal in the current area.

  3. Network Diagnosis via App: The ZTE Link App offers a 'Network Diagnosis' tool. Users can tap 'Toolkit' in the app, then 'Network Diagnosis'. This feature will check the SIM status, signal strength, other router settings, and the Access Point Name (APN). The app will provide instructions based on its findings, guiding the user to resolve any identified issues.

Support: For further problems during installation or operation, users are encouraged to contact support via email at support@securecamper.co.uk. This ensures that users have a direct channel for assistance if they encounter issues not covered by the troubleshooting guide.

In summary, the Secure Camper Motorhome Wi-Fi system is a comprehensive solution for mobile internet, offering flexible installation options, intuitive setup, and robust management features through a dedicated app, all designed to provide reliable connectivity on the go.
