Overview

The SENS EnerGenius is a battery charger designed for commercial and industrial use, specifically for charging lead-acid or liquid electrolyte nickel-cadmium batteries. It is available in several models: NRG12-20 (12-Volt, 20-Amp), NRG24-20 (24-Volt, 20-Amp), and NRG22-20 (field configurable for 12V or 24V, 20A).

Function Description

The EnerGenius charger provides a controlled charging process for storage batteries. It features a 4-rate fast charge program with selectable float and boost voltage settings to match specific battery vendor recommendations. The charger is designed to handle various battery states, including dead batteries, and incorporates temperature compensation to adjust output voltage based on ambient temperature, ensuring optimal charging and battery longevity. It also includes comprehensive fault protection and alarm systems to safeguard both the charger and the battery.

Usage Features

  • Battery Friendly Charging:
    • Selectable float and boost voltage settings to match specific battery vendor recommendations.
    • Remote temperature compensation for accurate voltage control, enhancing battery life.
    • Ability to charge deeply discharged or "dead" batteries.
    • Electronically controlled 4-rate fast charge program (constant current, high rate taper, finishing, maintaining).
  • Display Selector (JP800): Allows selection of meter display view for VOLTS, AMPS, or AUTO (alternates between Amps and Volts).
  • Boost Mode Jumper (JP1B): Enables or disables automatic boost charging (equalization) based on battery manufacturer recommendations.
  • Float Voltage Jumper (JP1C): Configures the float voltage according to battery manufacturer specifications, with settings for various lead-acid and nickel-cadmium battery types (e.g., 14.30/28.60V for 10 or 20 cell NiCd, 13.62/27.24V for 6 or 12 cell VRLA lead-acid).
  • Battery Range Jumper (JP1A): Sets the charger for 12V or 24V batteries.
  • "Jump Start" Battery Initialization Mode: Allows initial charging of zero-charge Nickel Cadmium batteries or new, dry and discharged lead-acid batteries. Can also be used for excessively discharged batteries already in service, but requires consulting the battery manufacturer for safety.
  • LED Indicators: Provide visual status of charger operation and fault conditions:
    • T-COMP ACTIVE (Green): Temperature-corrected charger voltage.
    • AC/ON (Green): Normal AC input.
    • CHGR FAIL (Red): Internal charger failure.
    • DC HIGH (Red): Excessive battery voltage.
    • FLOAT MODE (Green): Normal voltage (float charge).
    • BOOST MODE (Yellow): Boost voltage (fast charge).
    • AC FAIL (Red): Low or missing AC input.
    • DC LOW (Red): Low battery voltage.
    • BATT FAULT (Red): Open, wrong voltage, reversed battery, or defective battery.
  • Alarm Contacts (TB5): Provides relay outputs for various fault conditions (Battery Fault, AC Fail, Charger Fail, High Battery Alarm, Low Battery Alarm) for remote monitoring. Contacts are configurable as Normally Closed (NC) or Normally Open (NO).

Maintenance Features

  • Troubleshooting Guides: Detailed flowcharts are provided for diagnosing common issues such as repeated blown AC fuse, AC Fail alarm, Charger Fail alarm, DC High alarm, DC Low alarm, and Battery Fault alarm.
  • Fuse Replacement: AC input and DC output fuses are replaceable, with specific part numbers and ratings provided.
  • Internal Adjustments: Jumpers for AC line voltage, battery range, boost mode, float voltage, and meter display can be adjusted by trained personnel.
  • Static Discharge Precautions: Instructions for handling the charger to prevent damage to static-sensitive components.
  • Wiring Guidelines: Detailed instructions for proper wiring, including conductor types, sizes, routing, and tightening torques, to ensure safe and reliable operation.

  • Warranty:
    • Standard Limited Warranty: Three (3) years for NRG and MicroGenius 2/S2 chargers (except magnetic parts and power semiconductors, which are 10 years). Five (5) years for MicroGenius S4. Covers defects in material and workmanship. Repair or replacement at SENS' option.
    • Extended Warranty: Option to purchase extended warranty for 5 or 10 years from original shipment.
    • Premium Warranty: Available at original purchase, covers reasonable and customary labor and mileage charges for repair or replacement (limited to 100% of original net product invoice amount, as a credit toward future purchases). Available only to the original customer.
