To begin with, seek assistance from a speech therapist to help you set the
desiredpitch. Please also follow the advice in the instruction manual.
This is achieved using the dip-switch inside the speech aid. Relatives
who knew your original voice well should be able to help you choose
the pitch that best matches that.
The difference in pitch between buttons A and B is usually a halftone,
this gives speech a more natural sound which we can call the ‘speech
melody’. You should learn to change quickly between the two buttons in
order to add emphasis to words and phrases where it is naturally required.
Examples:
Hi, how are you? Yes, I like that!
Fancy a coffee? What’s your name?
In these cases, Button B should be used for the word or syllable in bold
print, as this is where the emphasis lies. This button can be operated
either by a rocking movement using the thumb, or by using your index
(pressing button A) and middle finger (pressing button B).
When you first begin speaking with your SERVOX
®
digital you will probably
already have enough to do with coordinating your breathing, articulation
and speech. However, having already worked on this first step and now
feeling more comfortable with the speech aid, you can begin to introduce
your own speech melody. Exercises such as reading poems or other texts
out loud will help to give your speech more variation and expression.
In addition, it is possible to alter your sound by moving the speech aid
either slightly above or below your usual spot, and varying the pressure
with which you hold it against the skin.
Try to maintain your natural facial expressions and gestures during
speech.
Pitch (‘Speech Melody’) Two Screw Caps
The individual character of the voice obtained through the use of an
electronic speech aid is partly limited by design factors.
Good articulation, facial expressions and gestures, as well as the coordi-
nated and confident usage of the buttons are crucial for clear speech.
With the SERVOX
®
digital speech aid we provide you with two screw
caps; one with a harder tone, the other with a softer tone.
In this way we are offering you a greater possibility of the speech aid
settings suiting your personal needs and expectations.
Please try out both screw caps once you are familiar with the principles
of using the device, and you are confident in using it. If need be, let
other family members help you decide which screw cap best and most
clearly reproduces your original voice.
Please note:
IIII Screw cap with dark blue hard membrane = harder tone
IIII Screw cap with mid-blue hard membrane = softer tone
When changing the screw cap, please ensure that the O ring is not
squashed.
