Posture: To be as successful as possible with your SERVOX
®
digital, simply
stay relaxed and loose, particularly around the neck and shoulder area.
Placement: Press the speech aid lightly against your ‘best spot’ (at the
side of your neck, under the chin or on the cheek) to achieve a clear, buzz-
free sound. Creases or wrinkles in the skin, scars, facial hair and protec-
tion bibs affect the quality of speech.
Screw cap: If the cap is screwed onto the device too tightly, the clarity
of the tone will be affected.
Pitch: Match the pitch of the speech aid to that of the voice before
surgery, ask relatives for help with this.
Synchronising tone and speech: Don’t swallow the beginning and end
of words; press button A or B immediately at the start of speech and
release as soon as speech is completed.
Breathing: Avoid sounds from the stoma by practicing breathing exercises
without your SERVOX
®
digital, for example, blowing a whistle or blowing
out a candle. Use only the air in your mouth for this. Try dividing your
breathing into stages: Inhalation – Exhalation – Pause.
Articulation: Speak clearly without swallowing any syllables. Don’t speak
in a continuous tone, but avoid overarticulating.
Speech tempo: Speak smoothly with regular pauses.
Expression: Enhance your expression by incorporating your natural facial
expressions and gestures.
Note:
If you are using an electronic speech aid and at the same time
learning oesophageal speech, take care not to mix the two
together. When using the SERVOX
®
digital the sound is produced
by the speech aid.
In oesophageal voice you are using your body’s own voice, and air
from the mouth must firstly be moved into the oesophagus in
order to voice your speech. Be sure that you don`t use both
methods together, which means: don`t speak with the oesophageal
voice at the same time as using your speech aid. When you use
the speech aid, just use your pseudowhisper.
