Cooking Guides Overview

Overview

This document serves as both an operation manual and a cooking guide for the Sharp Carousel Microwave Oven models R-200K and R-221K. It provides comprehensive instructions for using the oven's various features, ensuring safe operation, and maintaining the appliance.

Function Description

The Sharp Carousel Microwave Oven is designed for home food preparation, including heating, cooking, and defrosting food and beverages. It offers a range of manual and automatic cooking functions to accommodate diverse culinary needs.

Manual Operations:

  • Microwave Time Cooking: This feature allows users to set a specific cooking time (up to 99 minutes, 99 seconds) and choose from five different power levels: 10% (LOW), 30% (MEDIUM LOW), 50% (MEDIUM), 70% (MEDIUM HIGH), and 100% (HIGH). If no power level is selected, the oven defaults to 100% power. This variable control allows for precise adjustment of the microwave cooking rate, suitable for tasks like keeping food warm, defrosting, softening butter, cooking casseroles, muffins, slices, vegetables, rice, pasta, fruit, and seafood.
  • Sequence Cooking: The oven can be programmed with up to three automatic cooking sequences, allowing for automatic switching between different variable power settings. This is useful for recipes that require multiple stages of cooking at varying power levels.
  • Instant Cook™: This convenient feature allows for quick cooking at 100% power for one minute with a single press. Each subsequent press increases the cooking time by one minute, making it ideal for quick reheating or cooking small items.
  • Increasing Time During a Cooking Programme: Users can add more cooking time during an ongoing program by pressing the INSTANT COOK/START pad. Each press adds one minute to the remaining cooking time.

Automatic Operations:

The microwave oven includes several automatic features designed for ease of use and optimal results. It is crucial to follow the instructions in the MENU GUIDE carefully for these operations.

  • Instant Action: This feature allows for cooking or reheating several popular foods with pre-programmed settings. Examples include cooking jacket potatoes or reheating beverages. The oven automatically calculates the cooking time based on the selected quantity.
  • Express Defrost: This function rapidly defrosts 0.5 kg of specific foods, such as fish fillets, chicken fillets, sausages, or minced meat. The manual provides a dedicated MENU GUIDE for this feature, outlining specific procedures like turning over food and shielding portions.
  • Easy Defrost: This advanced feature automatically computes the microwave power and defrosting time based on the weight of the food. It supports defrosting for items like steak/chops, roast meat, poultry, and chicken pieces. Users enter the weight, and the oven manages the defrosting process, often requiring turning over food and shielding certain parts.
  • Less/More Setting: The cooking times for automatic menus are tailored to popular tastes. This feature allows users to adjust the cooking time to their individual preference by selecting "more" (to add time) or "less" (to reduce time) for Instant Action, Express Defrost, and Easy Defrost programs.

Other Convenient Features:

  • Timer: The oven can be used as a general-purpose timer for up to 99 minutes, 99 seconds. This is useful for timing boiled eggs on the stove or the recommended standing time for food.
  • Child Lock: To prevent accidental operation, especially when no food or liquid is in the cavity, the child lock feature can be activated. This locks the control panel, displaying "SAFE" when any pad is pressed.
  • Demonstration Mode: This mode is primarily for retail display and allows users to practice key operations without actual microwave power. Cooking operations are simulated at ten times the normal speed.
  • Alarm: The oven includes an alarm function that beeps multiple times at intervals if food is left in the oven after cooking, reminding the user to remove it.

Usage Features

  • Control Panel Display: The display shows cooking time, weight, quantity, and indicators for "COOK," "DEF" (defrost), "KG," and "CHECK."
  • Entry Signal Tone: An audible beep confirms each correct entry on the control panel.
  • End of Cycle Beep: The oven beeps for approximately 2 seconds at the end of a cooking cycle.
  • Door Operation: Opening the door during cooking pauses the timer, which resumes when the door is closed and the INSTANT COOK/START pad is pressed.
  • Power Level Display: During cooking, pressing the POWER LEVEL pad temporarily displays the current power level.
  • Clock Setting: The oven features a 12-hour clock.
  • Stop/Clear Function: Pressing STOP/CLEAR once temporarily stops the oven or clears a programming mistake. Pressing it twice cancels the current cooking program.
  • Rounding Weight: For automatic operations requiring weight input, the weight should be rounded to the nearest 0.1kg (100g).
  • Ventilation: Proper air circulation is essential. The oven should be installed with at least 10cm clearance on top and 5cm on both sides and rear.
  • Turntable: The oven must always be operated with the roller stay and turntable in place.
  • Food Preparation Hints: The manual provides helpful hints for arranging food, turning, covering, piercing, shielding, standing time, size, density, fat and bone considerations, starting temperature, quantity, and condensation. These tips are crucial for achieving optimal cooking results and ensuring food safety.
  • Cookware and Utensil Guide: A detailed guide specifies which materials are safe for microwave use (e.g., glassware, ceramic, plastic wrap, plastic cookware, browning dishes) and which should be avoided (e.g., metal cookware, straw, wood). It also provides advice on how to use certain items, such as aluminum foil for shielding and browning dishes with insulators.

Maintenance Features

  • Care and Cleaning: Regular cleaning is vital to prevent food deposits from deteriorating the oven's surfaces and to ensure its longevity and safe operation.
    • Exterior: Clean with mild soap and warm water, avoiding harsh abrasive cleaners. Keep ventilation openings free of dust.
    • Door: Wipe the door, window, seals, and adjacent parts frequently with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
    • Touch Control Panel: Wipe with a slightly dampened cloth; do not scrub or use chemical cleaners. Avoid excessive water.
    • Interior Walls: Wipe with a soft cloth and warm water after each use to remove food splashes. The waveguide cover should also be cleaned gently. It is critical not to remove the waveguide cover and to avoid commercial oven cleaners, abrasive or harsh cleaners, and scouring pads.
    • Turntable/Roller Stay: Wash with mild soapy water and dry thoroughly.
  • Service Call Check: A checklist is provided to help users troubleshoot common issues before calling for service. This includes checking if the display lights up, if the oven lamp and cooling fan work, if the turntable rotates, and if water heats up.
  • Power Cord: If the power supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by a qualified service technician trained by SHARP.
  • Oven Lamp: If the oven lamp fails, consult a dealer or a qualified service technician.
  • Safety Latches: Do not tamper with or deactivate the door safety latches. Avoid bumping or catching utensils or clothes on them.
  • General Safety: The manual emphasizes not attempting to adjust or repair the oven oneself, as this is hazardous and should only be done by a qualified Sharp service technician. It also warns against operating a damaged oven.
