Overview

This document describes the SHARPAL Item No. 103N, a versatile sharpening tool designed for a wide range of blades and implements. It features multiple sharpening slots, each tailored for specific sharpening needs, and is suitable for both household and garden tools.

Function Description:

The SHARPAL 103N is a multi-purpose sharpening device equipped with five distinct sharpening sections, labeled A through E, each serving a specialized function:

  • A. Knife Sharpening: This V-Notch carbide sharpening slot is designed for quickly sharpening and repairing dull or damaged edges of knives. It's particularly effective for setting a new edge on knives that have lost their sharpness.
  • B. Pruner & Mower Blade Sharpening: This single carbide sharpening slot is specifically for maintaining the sharpness and edge quality of blades with a single-bevel on one side, such as those found on most pruning shears, loppers, and mower blades. It is not intended for blades without an initial bevel or for double-beveled or serrated edges.
  • C. Quickly sharpen and repair dull or damaged edge of all sorts of knives, garden implements, tools, etc.: This carbide section is a general-purpose sharpener capable of addressing a broad spectrum of dull or damaged edges on various tools, including hedge shears, knives, garden implements, and scissors.
  • D. Hone, polish and remove burrs for an already sharp blade edge: This ceramic rod section is used for fine honing, polishing, and removing burrs from an already sharp or slightly dull blade edge. It is recommended for valuable knives to achieve a refined finish.
  • E. Axe & Machete Sharpening: This V-Notch slot is dedicated to sharpening larger, heavier blades like axes, hatchets, and machetes.

Usage Features:

The manual provides detailed instructions for using each sharpening section, emphasizing proper technique for optimal results and user safety.

A. Knife Sharpening Instruction:

  1. Hold the sharpener firmly on a flat, stable surface with your left hand.
  2. Insert the knife blade fully and vertically into the V-Notch carbide slot A at a 90-degree angle to the sharpener.
  3. Gently pull the knife blade from heel to tip in the direction of the indicator arrows, applying light pressure initially and gradually increasing it until the desired sharpness is achieved.
  4. Repeat this action until the blade is sharp. Always pull the blade from heel to tip; never move it back and forth.
    • Note: Light pressure is sufficient. Excessive pressure can lead to loss of control and potential injury. For slightly dull edges or valuable knives, it's recommended to try sharpening with the ceramic rod D first.

B. Pruner Sharpening Instruction:

  1. Secure the pruner, lopper, or mower blade with the cutting edge exposed.
  2. Position the sharpener head over the heel of the blade, lowering it so the cutting edge rests in the bottom of the V-Notch slot B.
  3. Ensure the angled carbide blade in the V-Notch aligns with the beveled side of the blade. Hold the sharpener as parallel to the cutting edge as possible.
  4. Apply moderate downward pressure and pull the sharpener across the cutting edge from heel to tip, following the contour of the blade and maintaining constant pressure.
  5. Repeat until the blade is sharp. Always pull from heel to tip; never back and forth.

C. Hedge Shears Sharpening Instruction:

  1. Hold the sharpener at a slight angle to the blades.
  2. Stroke the sharpener along the cutting edge from heel to tip in the direction of the indicator arrows.
  3. Maintain an approximate 20-degree angle between the edge being sharpened and carbide C (as shown in Fig. 4).
  4. Stroke repeatedly along each side of the edge, maintaining constant pressure and following the blade's contour until the desired sharpness is obtained.
  5. For single-beveled blades (like hedge shears, pruners, mowers), only sharpen the beveled side.

D. Scissors Honing Instruction:

  1. Hold the sharpener at a slight angle to the blades.
  2. Stroke the sharpener along the cutting edge from heel to tip in the direction of the indicator arrows.
  3. Maintain an approximate 20-degree angle between the edge being sharpened and ceramic rod D (as shown in Fig. 6).
  4. Stroke repeatedly along each side of the edge, maintaining constant pressure and following the blade's contour until the desired sharpness is obtained.
  5. For single-beveled blades (like scissors, hedge shears, pruners, mowers), only sharpen the beveled side.

E. Axe Sharpening Instruction:

  1. Secure the axe, hatchet, or machete blade in a vise with the cutting edge exposed.
  2. Position the sharpener head over one end of the blade, lowering it so the cutting edge rests in the bottom of the V-Notch slot E.
  3. Hold the sharpener as parallel to the cutting edge as possible.
  4. Apply moderate downward pressure and pull the sharpener across the cutting edge from one end to the other, following the contour of the blade and maintaining constant pressure.
  5. Repeat until the blade is sharp. Always pull the sharpener across the blade from one end to the other; never back and forth.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Clean the exterior of the sharpener with a damp soft cloth.
  • Lubrication: Oil or other lubricating liquid is not necessary for this device.

Important Technical Specifications (Implied):

  • Sharpening Materials: Features carbide sharpening slots (A, B, C, E) for aggressive sharpening and edge repair, and a ceramic rod (D) for fine honing, polishing, and burr removal.
  • Ergonomics: Designed to be held comfortably and securely during use, with indicator arrows guiding the sharpening direction.
  • Angle Guidance: Specific angle recommendations (e.g., 90 degrees for knives in slot A, approximately 20 degrees for hedge shears/scissors in C and D) are provided to ensure correct sharpening.

Safety Precautions:

  • Always wear gloves and eye protection when sharpening.
  • Keep all fingers behind the finger guard.
  • Never place a free hand on top of the sharpener during use.
