This document serves as a Dealer's Manual for SHIMANO REVOSHIFT Shifters, providing comprehensive instructions for installation, adjustment, and maintenance. It is primarily intended for professional bicycle mechanics to ensure correct and safe handling of the product.
Function Description
The REVOSHIFT Shifter is a component designed for bicycle gear shifting, enabling riders to change gears smoothly and efficiently. It is compatible with various bicycle types, including ROAD, MTB, City Touring/Comfort Bike, URBAN SPORT, Trekking, and E-BIKE. The manual covers several models across different series:
- Non Series: SL-RV100, SL-RV300, SL-RV400
- SHIMANO: SL-RV200
- TOURNEY: SL-RS47, SL-RS45, SL-RS36, SL-RS35, SL-RS34, SL-RS25
The shifter operates by pulling an inner cable, which in turn actuates the front or rear derailleur to move the chain between different chainrings or sprockets. The manual details specific procedures for both left-hand and right-hand lever adjustments, which correspond to the front and rear derailleurs, respectively.
For front derailleurs, the shifter manages the chain's movement across the smallest, middle, and largest chainrings. For rear derailleurs, it controls the chain's position on the smallest to largest sprockets. The system incorporates SIS (SHIMANO INDEX SYSTEM) adjustment, which ensures precise and reliable gear changes by indexing the shift lever's movement to the derailleur's position.
Usage Features
The REVOSHIFT Shifter is designed for intuitive operation, allowing riders to change gears with a simple twist of the grip. Key usage features highlighted in the manual include:
- Lever Operation: Users are instructed to keep turning the crank during lever operation to facilitate smooth gear changes.
- Safety: The manual emphasizes the importance of proper installation to prevent obstruction of brake operation, which could lead to loss of control and crashes. A specific gap of 0.5 mm between the REVOSHIFT lever and the half grip is recommended for certain models (SL-RS series), while others (SL-RV series) do not require this gap.
- Compatibility: The manual provides a compatibility chart for friction-supported front derailleurs (FD-TZ31, FD-TZ30, FD-TZ21, FD-TZ20) with specific shift lever models, indicating which combinations are "OK" and "Not OK."
- Adjustment Procedures: Detailed steps are provided for adjusting both left-hand and right-hand levers.
- Left-hand lever adjustment: This involves adjusting the low position of the front derailleur (gap between inner plate and chain to 0-0.5 mm), connecting and securing the inner cable, adjusting cable tension, and adjusting the high limit (gap between outer plate and chain to 0-0.5 mm). For models without a cable adjustment barrel (LN friction type), middle chainring adjustment is not necessary.
- Right-hand lever adjustment: This includes installing the chain, connecting and securing the inner cable, adjusting cable tension, and adjusting the low limit (aligning the guide pulley with the center of the largest sprocket).
- SIS Adjustment: This critical adjustment ensures precise indexing. It involves operating the lever to move the chain to specific sprockets and then adjusting the barrel until the chain is correctly positioned and no noise occurs.
- B-tension screw adjustment: This adjustment is specific to rear derailleur models (RD-M360, RD-M310, RD-TX800, RD-TY500, RD-TY200-SS, RD-TY200-GS, RD-TY21B, RD-TZ500) and involves setting the guide pulley's distance from the gear or freewheel to optimize shifting performance.
Maintenance Features
The manual outlines several maintenance procedures to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of the REVOSHIFT Shifter and associated components:
- Periodic Cleaning: Gears should be periodically washed with a neutral detergent. Cleaning the chain with neutral detergent and lubricating it is recommended to extend the life of the gears and the chain.
- Lubrication: For maximum performance, SHIMANO lubricants and maintenance products are highly recommended. Specifically, for the best SIS performance, all power-transmission parts should be periodically lubricated.
- Inner Cable Replacement: Detailed instructions are provided for replacing the inner cable for specific models (SL-RS47, SL-RS45, SL-RS36, SL-RS35, SL-RS34, SL-RS25, SL-RV400, SL-RV100, SL-RV200, SL-RV300). This involves:
- Aligning the gear with the top (rear) or low (front) position.
- Removing the cover.
- Pulling out the old inner head and cable using a sharp tool.
- Inserting a new inner cable into the hole and passing it through the bracket and outer casing stopper area.
- For SL-RV100/SL-RV200/SL-RV300, turning over the rubber grip to access the inner head.
- Cable Preparation: When cutting the outer casing, it is important to cut the end opposite to the marking and make the end round using a TL-CT12 needle or similar tool to ensure a uniform diameter inside the hole. The end with the marking is pre-greased to maintain cable operating efficiency.
- Genuine Parts: The manual strongly advises using only SHIMANO genuine parts for replacements to prevent component failure and ensure safety.
- Eye Protection: Wearing approved eye protection is recommended when performing maintenance tasks such as replacing components.
The manual also includes a list of necessary tools for installation, removal, adjustment, and maintenance, such as hexagon wrenches (2.5 mm, 3 mm, 5 mm), a 9 mm spanner, cross head screwdrivers, and the TL-CT12 cable cutter.
