Achtung
!
The ground-fault detection module recognizes and reports any
connection from the positive or negative AS-Interface potential to the
system potential connected via terminal 2.
This module does not monitor external auxiliary voltages for the
occurrence of ground-faults.
This module cannot be used in association with modules installed in
the AS-Interface network with electrical connection to AS-Interface
potentials (even over high impedance).
The ground-fault detection module must be checked at regular intervals
to ensure proper functioning, as follows:
Briefly actuating the TEST/RESET button (< 2 s) simulates a ground
fault and should cause the FAULT output to be set. This status
remains stored until, by actuating the TEST/RESET button for a
longer period (> 2 s), the module is reset, thus setting the OK output
and resetting the FAULT output. So long as there is a ground fault,
reset is not possible.
The module can also be reset by applying HIGH at the zero-potential
remote reset (R-RES) input. Here too, so long as there is a ground
fault, reset is not possible.
The test function actually does generate a ground fault.
Before commencing the test, ensure that the system is placed in a safe
condition!

Overview

The Siemens S22.5 Module for ground-fault detection in AS-Interface networks, identified by part number 3RK1408-8K.00-0AA2, is a crucial component designed to enhance the safety and reliability of AS-Interface systems. This module actively monitors the AS-Interface network for ground faults, specifically detecting any connection between the positive or negative AS-Interface potential and the system potential connected via terminal 2.

Function Description:

The primary function of the S22.5 module is to provide early detection and reporting of ground faults within an AS-Interface network. A ground fault occurs when there is an unintended electrical connection between a live conductor and the earth or a grounded equipment frame. Such faults can lead to dangerous situations, including electrical shock hazards, equipment damage, and system downtime. By continuously monitoring the AS-Interface potentials against the system ground, the module can promptly identify these hazardous conditions.

Upon detecting a ground fault, the module activates its FAULT output, signaling the presence of an issue. This output can be integrated into a larger control system to trigger alarms, initiate safety shutdowns, or alert maintenance personnel. The module also features an O.K. output, which indicates normal operation when no ground fault is detected.

Important Technical Specifications:

The S22.5 module is designed for robust performance in industrial environments. Key specifications include:

  • Connection Terminals: The module provides terminals for AS-Interface positive and negative potentials, as well as a connection for the system potential (terminal 2). It also includes terminals for the O.K. and FAULT outputs, and a remote reset input (R-RES).
  • Wiring: The module supports various wire cross-sections for different connection types. For AS-Interface and auxiliary connections, it accommodates 1 x (0.5 ... 4.0) mm² or 2 x (0.5 ... 2.5) mm² wires for the 3RK1408-..E variant, and 2 x (0.25 ... 1.5) mm² for the 3RK1408-..G variant. AWG wire sizes range from 20 to 14 for the -..E variant and 24 to 16 for the -..G variant. The stripping length for wires is 5-6 mm.
  • Torque: Terminal screws require a tightening torque of 0.8 to 1.2 Nm (7 to 10.3 lb.in).
  • LED Status Indicators: The module features multiple LEDs to provide clear visual feedback on its operational status:
    • AS-Interface (green): Indicates the presence or absence of AS-Interface voltage.
    • O.K. (green): Lights up when no ground fault is detected and AS-Interface voltage is present.
    • FAULT (red): Lights up when a ground fault is detected.
    • R-RES (yellow): Indicates when the remote reset input is active.
  • Dimensions: The module has a compact design, with typical dimensions of 65 mm (width) for the 3RK1408-..E variant and 84.4 mm for the 3RK1408-..G variant. The height is approximately 92.2 mm for the -..E variant and 93.9 mm for the -..G variant, with a depth of about 101.6 mm for the -..E variant and 103.4 mm for the -..G variant.

Usage Features:

  • Ground Fault Detection: The module continuously monitors for connections between AS-Interface potentials (positive or negative) and the system potential (earth).
  • Status Indication: Clear LED indicators provide immediate visual feedback on the module's operational status, AS-Interface voltage presence, and ground fault detection.
  • Test/Reset Functionality: A built-in TEST/RESET button allows for manual testing and resetting of the module.
    • Testing: A brief press (< 2 seconds) of the TEST/RESET button simulates a ground fault, activating the FAULT output. This allows for verification of the module's detection and signaling capabilities.
    • Resetting: A longer press (> 2 seconds) of the TEST/RESET button resets the module, clearing the FAULT output and activating the O.K. output, provided no actual ground fault exists.
  • Remote Reset: The module also supports remote resetting via a potential-free R-RES input. Applying a HIGH signal to this input will reset the module, similar to the manual reset, as long as no actual ground fault is present.
  • Safety Warning: It is crucial to note that the test function does generate a ground fault. Therefore, the system must be brought into a safe condition before performing any tests to prevent hazardous situations.
  • Limitations: The module does not monitor external auxiliary voltages for ground faults. Furthermore, it cannot be used in AS-Interface networks that include modules with galvanic connections (even high impedance) to AS-Interface potentials, as this would interfere with its ground fault detection mechanism.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Function Check: It is recommended to regularly check the module's function using the TEST/RESET button to ensure its proper operation. This proactive maintenance helps confirm that the ground fault detection system is always ready to respond to actual faults.
  • Clear Status Indicators: The LED indicators simplify troubleshooting by providing quick visual cues about the module's state, enabling faster diagnosis of issues.
  • Durable Design: The module is designed for industrial use, ensuring reliability and longevity in demanding environments.
  • Installation and Maintenance Safety: All installation, maintenance, and decommissioning work on the device must be performed by an authorized electrician. Before any work, the system and device must be de-energized and locked out to prevent accidental power-up, adhering to critical safety protocols.

The Siemens S22.5 module is an essential safety device for AS-Interface networks, offering reliable ground fault detection and clear status indication to protect personnel and equipment. Its user-friendly test and reset features, combined with robust construction, make it a valuable component in industrial automation systems.
