Overview

This document describes the SILVERCREST® SMAS 500 A1 Milk Frother, an appliance designed for heating and frothing milk.

Function Description

The SilverCrest SMAS 500 A1 Milk Frother is an electrical appliance primarily used for heating milk and creating milk froth, both hot and cold, for domestic use. It is not intended for use with other liquids or for commercial purposes.

The device operates by placing milk in the container and selecting one of four programs via a function button. These programs allow the user to:

  • Heat milk with stiff froth.
  • Heat milk with creamy froth.
  • Heat milk with only a little froth.
  • Froth milk without heating (cold froth).

Once a program is selected, a control lamp (red for hot, blue for cold) illuminates, and the process begins automatically. The appliance switches off automatically upon completion of the program, and the control lamp turns off. The preparation process can be stopped prematurely by pressing the function button again or by removing the appliance from its base.

For optimal frothing, it is recommended to use cow's milk with a fat content of 3.5% or 1.5%. Well-cooled milk tends to froth better. The appliance should not be used to froth milk a second time, as this may cause burning. After frothing, it is advisable to let the milk stand for about 30 seconds to allow larger air bubbles to burst and the liquid milk to settle, resulting in a finer foam.

The appliance is equipped with an overheating protection system. If five consecutive cycles are run without sufficient cooling time (approximately 2 minutes between uses), the control lamps will flash, and no further input will be accepted. The device will be ready for use again after about five minutes.

Usage Features

The device is designed for ease of use with a straightforward interface:

  • Preparation:
    1. Remove the container from the base and fill it with milk, ensuring the volume is between the MIN (75 ml) and the appropriate MAX mark (150 ml for frothing, 300 ml for heating only) to prevent overflow.
    2. Place the container back on the base.
    3. Put the lid on the container.

      • One press: Heat milk with stiff froth.

      • Three presses: Heat milk with only a little froth.
      • Four presses: Froth milk without heating.
    5. The selected program will start automatically, indicated by the corresponding control lamp.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Never open the lid while the appliance is in operation due to the risk of scalding.
    • The appliance parts become hot during use; always handle it by the handle.
    • Ensure the appliance is stable and vertical before switching it on to prevent tipping and hot milk spills.
    • Do not touch the rotating whisk during operation.
    • Always use fresh milk and do not consume milk that has been left in the container for extended periods.
    • Always unplug the appliance from the mains socket when not in use or before cleaning.
  • Recipe Ideas: The frothed milk can be used for various beverages, including Italian-style cappuccino (espresso topped with milk froth), Marocchino (melted chocolate spread in a glass, espresso, then milk froth and cocoa powder), and Vienna melange (strong black coffee topped with milk froth and optional sugar).

Maintenance Features

Proper cleaning and storage are essential for maintaining the appliance and ensuring its longevity.

  • Immediate Cleaning: Clean the container immediately after each use, once it has cooled down, to prevent milk residue from drying on.
  • Basic Cleaning (after each use):
    1. For a quick clean, fill the container with water and a little detergent (with the whisk inserted), ensuring the volume is within the MIN and MAX markings (up to 300 ml).
    2. Start the appliance to allow the whisk to swirl through the water.
    3. Rinse the container thoroughly with clean water afterwards.
  • Thorough Cleaning (regularly and for initial use):
    1. Remove the whisk from the appliance.
    2. Clean the inside of the appliance with warm water and mild detergent using a soft cloth or sponge. Pay special attention to the area around the drive shaft.
    3. Rinse the appliance thoroughly with clean water and dry it.
    4. Remove the sealing ring from the lid and clean both parts in mild soapy water. Rinse off detergent residues with fresh water and dry them well before pushing the sealing ring back onto the lid.
    5. Clean the whisk in mild soapy water, rinse it thoroughly with fresh water, and allow it to dry.
    6. Clean all exterior surfaces, the base, and the mains cable with a slightly damp cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a mild detergent on the cloth, then wipe off any residues with a water-moistened cloth.
    7. Always dry the appliance thoroughly before reusing it.
  • Prohibited Cleaning Methods:
    • Never immerse the appliance, mains cable, or plug in water or other liquids.
    • Do not wash the appliance or any of its parts in a dishwasher.
    • Do not use abrasive or caustic cleaning agents, as these can corrode the surface and cause irreparable damage.
  • Storage:
    • Allow the appliance to cool down completely before storing it.
    • Wind the power cable clockwise around the cable retainer on the base.
    • Store the appliance in a clean and dry location.
  • Troubleshooting: A troubleshooting guide is provided in the manual to address common issues such as the appliance not working (e.g., plug not inserted, not switched on, defective, or too hot).
  • Disposal: The appliance must not be disposed of with normal domestic waste. It is subject to European Directive 2012/19/EU and should be disposed of via an approved disposal company or municipal waste facility. Packaging materials should be separated and disposed of according to local regulations, with clear labeling for plastics, paper/cardboard, and composites.
