Check
oil
flow
in
window
when
machine
is
running.
Check
oil
flow
to
hook
by
holding
a small
piece
of
paper
under
the
hook
while
machine
is
running.
After
15
seconds,
the
paper
should
show
an
oil
pattern
of
approx
1/32
inch
(0.8mm).
Less
oil
More
oil
Fill
oil
reservoir
to
high
mark.
Check
daily.

speeds
recommended
for

are
5000
RPM
(4500
RPM

however,
for
the
first

machines
should

LUBRICATION

Automatic Lubrication Oil

Use SINGER "TYPE C" OIL ONLY. Check oil flow in window when machine is running.

Hook Lubrication Check

Check oil flow to hook by holding paper under hook while running. Paper should show oil pattern.

Oil Reservoir Check

Fill oil reservoir to high mark. Check daily.

SPEED

Recommended Operating Speeds

Max speeds for 457U are 5000 RPM (4500 for 457U140). Run 500 RPM below max for first 150 hours.

NEEDLES

Recommended Needle Types

Use Singer Catalog 1906 (chromium). For 457U140, use Catalog 8752. Sizes determined by thread/material.

UPPER THREAD

Threading Preparation

Remove thread remnants from rotary take-up. Be cautious of thread cutter.

Threading Procedure

Thread only when needle bar is in the highest position.

Setting the Needle

Loosen screw, insert needle fully, tighten screw. Ensure long groove faces front.

BOBBIN REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT

Bobbin Case Removal

Open latch, pull bobbin case from hook, release latch, bobbin drops out.

Bobbin Case Replacement

Hold latch, replace bobbin case on stud, release latch, press until groove catches.

BOBBIN WINDER

Using the Bobbin Winder

Place bobbin on spindle, wind thread around bobbin, press lever against bobbin.

THREADING BOBBIN CASE

Bobbin Case Threading Steps

Pull thread into slot, under spring, up delivery eye, and into bobbin case slot.

Slot Selection for Material

Use slot A for light-weight, slot B for medium-weight material.

THREAD TENSIONS

Bobbin Thread Tension Adjustment

Set tension as light as possible for correct stitch formation.

Needle Thread Tension Adjustment

Regulate needle thread tension only when presser foot is down.

STITCH LENGTH REGULATION (457U105, 457U125, 457U135 MACHINES)

Reverse Feed Stitch Length

Turn regulating screw to set desired stitch length for reverse feeding.

Forward Feed Stitch Length

Turn regulating screw to set desired stitch length for forward feeding.

Switching Between Feeds

Push lever down for reverse feeding, release for forward feeding.

STITCH LENGTH REGULATION (457U140 MACHINE)

Adjusting Stitch Length

Tilt machine, loosen nut, shift connecting rod left/right, tighten nut.

ZIG-ZAG STITCH SETTING (457U105 MACHINE)

Zig-Zag Stitch Width

Set hand lever to desired zig-zag stitch width within 0-8 bight range.

Needle Position Adjustment

Set hand lever to desired needle positions: Left, Center, or Right.

ZIG-ZAG STITCH SETTING (457U125, 457U135, 457U140 MACHINES)

457U125 Zig-Zag Width

Set hand lever for zig-zag stitch width within 0-5 bight range.

457U135/457U140 Zig-Zag Width

Set hand lever for zig-zag stitch width within 0-8 bight range.

PRESSER FOOT PRESSURE

Adjusting Presser Foot Pressure

Pressure should be light as possible, sufficient for correct feeding.

CLEANING

Cleaning Procedure

Clean lint/waste around hook, feed rows, and hook area of oil pan.
