Overview

The SKLZ Hit-A-Way Select is a baseball and softball training device designed to help players improve their hitting skills, rhythm, and contact consistency. It allows for repeated, solid contact without the need for a pitcher or retrieving balls, making it an efficient tool for individual practice.

Function Description:

The Hit-A-Way Select consists of a central pole with a tethered ball that wraps around it. The user hits the ball, which then unwinds and rewinds around the pole, allowing for continuous hitting practice. This mechanism helps players develop proper swing mechanics, hand-eye coordination, and timing. The device is designed to simulate hitting a pitched ball, providing immediate feedback on contact quality and swing path.

Components:

The device includes the following parts:

  • Top Pole (A): The main vertical support structure around which the ball's tether wraps.
  • Base (B): The foundational support that holds the top pole and legs.
  • Legs (C) (3): Three stabilizing legs that attach to the base to provide a wide, stable footprint.
  • Knobs (D) (3): Used to secure the legs to the base.
  • Ground Stakes (E) (3): Inserted into the ground through the legs to further anchor the device, preventing movement during use.
  • Tethered Ball: The core training component, attached to the top pole via a cord, designed to be hit repeatedly.
  • Adjustment Sleeve: A component on the tether that allows for easy adjustment of the ball's height.

Assembly:

Assembly is straightforward and requires an adult.

  1. Site Selection: Choose a secure, flat ground area with approximately 12 feet of clear space suitable for hitting.
  2. Base and Top Pole Placement: Place the base (B) and top pole (A) on the ground.
  3. Leg Attachment: Attach each leg (C) to the base by inserting it and securing it with a knob (D). Screw the knob down until tight.
  4. Top Pole to Base: Place the top pole (A) onto the base (B), ensuring that the metal loops holding the Hit-A-Way are facing the same direction and are aligned.
  5. Ground Anchoring: Secure the device to the ground by sliding a ground stake (E) into the groove of each leg and twisting it into the ground.

Usage Features:

  • Height Adjustment: The Hit-A-Way Select offers adjustable ball height to accommodate different player heights and training needs.
    • Lowering Height: Pull the sleeve back, away from the ball, and push the lower cord out of the ball. Then, pull the excess cord back through the ball using the upper cord. Once the desired height is achieved, push the sleeve back against the ball.
    • Raising Height: Pull the sleeve back, away from the ball, and push the upper cord out of the ball. Then, pull the excess cord back through the ball using the lower cord. Once the desired height is achieved, push the sleeve back against the ball.
  • Continuous Hitting Practice:
    1. Setup: Wind the ball once around the pole (clockwise for right-handers). Pull the ball and cord toward you, fully extending the cord. Position a home plate (not included) so the ball is centered over it. Stand 2 feet back from the home plate to hit the ball near the thick end of the bat. Ensure the bat does not reach the adjustment sleeve or beyond, indicating the user is too close.
    2. Initiating Play: With the ball centered over the home plate, throw the ball forward towards an imaginary pitcher until the cord winds up. The ball should wind around the pole 3 times.
    3. Hitting: Wait for the ball to unwind 3 or 4 rotations, then hit the ball when the cord is under tension. It is crucial not to hit the ball if there is slack in the cord, as this can damage the product or cause injury.
    4. Rhythm Development: Repeat the hitting sequence to build a rhythm and strive for repeated, solid contact. Users are encouraged to hit continuously for a minute and gradually increase the length of their hitting intervals.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always wear a NOCSAE helmet; a face guard is recommended.
    • Ensure the device is set up in a clear area to avoid injury to the user or damage to property.
    • Others should stay clear of the hitting area.
    • If using with a net, position the tee far enough away to allow free swing but close enough for the net to capture the hit ball.
    • Never stand closer than 2 feet from the plate to avoid the bat tangling with the cord, and do not step toward the pole after hitting.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspection: Users must regularly check the product for wear and tear.
  • Discontinuation of Use: If any part of the Hit-A-Way Select breaks or shows significant wear, discontinue use immediately to prevent injury.
  • Storage:
    • Keep the device away from fire and heat sources.
    • Avoid leaving the Hit-A-Way Select outdoors for extended periods.
    • Do not store the device in extremely hot or cold environments, as this can reduce its lifespan.
    • When in use, ensure the setup area is clear to avoid damage to property.

Technical Specifications (Implicit from manual):

  • Required Clear Space: Approximately 12 feet for hitting.
  • Material: Components appear to be a combination of metal (poles, stakes) and plastic (base, knobs, ball, cord sleeve).
  • Durability: Designed for repeated impact, but requires regular inspection for wear.
