Overview

The Skytron Aurora Astro AUA3 series surgical lights are medical devices designed to provide local surgical site illumination for healthcare professionals across various clinical settings, including operating rooms, labor and delivery, emergency departments, trauma units, intensive care units, and minor procedure rooms. These lights are suitable for all types of surgical procedures and are intended for use on all patients requiring surgical intervention.

Function Description:

The Aurora Astro AUA3 lights utilize several modules containing LEDs (light emitting diodes) and optical color corrective reflectors to deliver high illumination to the operating field. The lights feature four intensity levels and an OFF setting. LEDs contribute to low heat radiation and extended illumination longevity. The system offers versatile positioning and multiple rotational capabilities, allowing for single- or dual-lighthead configurations. Standard fixtures are ceiling-mounted with continuous 360° rotation at the ceiling-mount end of the radial support arm. An enclosed spring tension balance mechanism, attached to the radial arm by a vertical support tube, provides an additional continuous 360° rotation point and allows 110° vertical travel of the lighthead without drifting. The lightheads feature a removable sterilizable positioning handle with an integrated intensity level adjustment control, enabling surgeons to precisely control adjustments from the sterile field.

  • Sterilizable Positioning Handle: Allows sterile personnel to position the lighthead and adjust intensity. It is removable for cleaning/sterilization.
  • Integrated Intensity Control: Push buttons on the lighthead side or the center of the sterilizable handle allow users to turn the light ON and cycle through four intensity settings to OFF.
  • Rotational Capabilities: Continuous 360° rotation at the ceiling mount and balance mechanism, plus 110° vertical travel for optimal positioning.
  • Portable Stand Light (AUA3S): Features a single lighthead on a portable stand with locking casters, cord wrap hooks, and transport/positioning handles on the support post. The base includes power cord, safety fuses, main switch, and equipotential terminal.
  • Safety Precautions: Users are warned against modifying the device, using it in the presence of flammable anesthetic mixtures, connecting additional power outlets, or touching the system and patient simultaneously. Direct eye contact with the light beam or highly reflective surfaces in its path should be avoided.
  • Movement and Transport (AUA3S): Requires unlocking casters, lowering the lighthead, and using support post handles for movement. Caution is advised to avoid obstacles and unstable flooring.

Maintenance Features:

  • Operator Inspections: Users are responsible for daily or pre/post-use inspections for missing labels, wear, damage, loose parts, drifting, electrical burns, lint accumulation, or fluid ingress. Any issues must be reported to facilities maintenance.
  • Cleaning and Disinfecting:
    • General Cleaning: Wipe exterior painted surfaces with a mild cleaning agent and soft, lint-free cloth. Clean rubber and plastic components with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh cleaners, steam, extremely hot water (over 150°F [65°C]), high-pressure sprays, or pouring liquids directly onto the fixture.
    • Disinfecting: Use manufacturer-certified disinfectant products compatible with polycarbonate, silicones, and stainless steel. Examples include Clorox Healthcare® Hydrogen Peroxide Cleaner Disinfectant Wipes.
    • UV-C Radiation Precautions: If UV-C devices are used, disinfect the polycarbonate diffuser lens, rotate the light fixture to face the ceiling, and maintain recommended distances from the UV-C source to prevent damage.
  • Sterilization of Handles: Sterilizable positioning handles are heat-resistant, impact-resistant plastic. Clean with mild alkaline cleaning products (without active chlorine), rinse thoroughly, and sterilize via steam at 270°F [132°C] for four minutes. Always follow AAMI and sterilizer manufacturer recommendations.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Performed semi-annually or as needed by Skytron authorized service technicians using genuine Skytron replacement parts. Includes checking hardware tightness, radial arm movement, LED module illumination, switch operations, articulation points, diffuser condition, and portable stand components (casters, support post, power cord).
