Overview

This document is a user manual for the Smeg BCC12 Bean to Cup Coffee Machine, an automatic coffee machine designed for household and similar use. It provides comprehensive instructions for operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, ensuring the appliance's aesthetic and functional qualities are preserved.

Function Description:

The Smeg BCC12 is an automatic bean-to-cup coffee machine capable of preparing various coffee-based drinks from grinding fresh coffee beans, as well as dispensing hot water and steam. It features a control panel with dedicated buttons for different drink selections and a program change button to switch between two dispensing menus: "White" and "Orange." The machine automatically performs self-cleaning cycles and indicates when maintenance tasks, such as descaling or emptying grounds, are required through LED alarms.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Water Tank Capacity: 1.4 liters (5).
  • Grinding Adjustment: Equipped with a knob (6) to adjust coffee grinding grain from finer ("B") to coarser ("A").
  • Power Supply: Requires connection to a current outlet with a minimum capacity of 10A and an efficient earth. Mains voltage and frequency must correspond to the data plate on the bottom of the appliance.
  • Altitude Limit: Designed for use indoors and at a maximum altitude of 2000 meters.
  • Automatic Shut-off: Switches off after 30 minutes of non-use.
  • Steam Delivery: Maximum continuous steam delivery time of two minutes.

Usage Features:

  • ON/OFF Button (9): Powers the machine on or off.
  • Dispensing Programs (26): Offers 8 functions accessible through two menus: "White" (Ristretto coffee, Espresso coffee, Coffee, Hot water) and "Orange" (Light Ristretto coffee, Light Espresso coffee, Long coffee, Steam function). The selected menu setting is retained in memory upon restart.
  • Grinding Adjustment (6): Allows users to customize the fineness of coffee grounds. This adjustment should only be made when the grinder is in operation or when the bean container is empty to prevent damage.
  • Quantity Customization: Users can customize the quantity of coffee or water dispensed for each drink type by pressing and holding the desired drink key, then pressing it again to stop dispensing at the desired level. Factory settings can be restored by simultaneously pressing buttons (9) and (26) for 3 seconds.
  • Dispenser Adjustment (11): The coffee dispenser's height can be adjusted, and the drip tray (14) can be removed for taller cups.
  • Steam Function (25): Used for frothing milk. The steam wand (18) should be introduced about 1 cm below the milk surface. A manual rinse cycle is recommended after each use of the steam function.
  • Water Hardness Setting: The machine's water hardness setting can be adjusted (Soft, Medium, Hard) based on a supplied test strip (21) to optimize descaling frequency. This setting is accessed by simultaneously pressing keys (22) and (26) for 3 seconds.
  • Acoustic Signals: Can be enabled or disabled by pressing keys (23) and (26) simultaneously for 3 seconds.
  • First Use Recommendations: It is recommended to make at least one coffee for a complete break-in of all circuits and to set the water hardness.
  • Water Usage: Only fresh, clean water should be used in the tank (5). Do not operate without water in the tank.
  • Coffee Bean Usage: Only whole coffee beans should be used in the hopper (3). Pre-ground coffee should not be inserted.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Cleaning: Regular cleaning of removable components such as the water tank (5), lids (2,4), grounds container (12), drip trays (13,14,15), mug holder (16), and infuser unit (17) with warm water is advised. The machine body (1) should be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Drip Tray Cleaning (14, 15): The external drip tray (14) and grid (16) should be cleaned daily with running water and neutral dish detergent. The internal drip tray (15) is dishwasher safe. A red float (33) indicates when the internal tray is full.
  • Coffee Grounds Container Cleaning (12) and Drip Tray (13): The coffee grounds container (12) and its internal drip tray (13) should be emptied and cleaned daily with running water and neutral dish detergent. Emptying the container with the machine on resets the grounds counter.
  • Water Tank Cleaning (5): The water tank should be cleaned regularly to prevent lime scale buildup.
  • Brewing Group Cleaning (17): Recommended at least once a week, or when LED (30) lights up. The brewing group can be removed by pressing release clips (34) and washed under running water. The housing and duct should be cleaned with the supplied brush (19). This operation should be performed with the machine on to reset the counter. A manual rinse cycle is recommended after cleaning the brewing group.
  • Steam Wand Cleaning (18): The steam wand should be cleaned after each use to prevent milk residue buildup. The lower part (35) can be removed by turning anticlockwise, and the supplied cleaning needle (20) can be used to clear the steam outlet.
  • Descaling (31): The machine signals when descaling is necessary (steady LED 31) or mandatory (flashing LED 31). The descaling cycle involves using a water and descaler solution, followed by a rinse cycle. Any softener filters should be removed before descaling.
  • "Empty System" Procedure: Recommended before long periods of non-use or before maintenance. This procedure drains all water from the tank and internal circuits.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual includes a comprehensive "What To Do If..." section to address common problems with possible causes and solutions. For persistent issues, contacting an authorized service center is advised.

Safety Recommendations:

  • Do not touch the plug with wet hands.
  • Ensure the power outlet is freely accessible.
  • Do not immerse the appliance, power cord, or plug in water.
  • Keep the appliance out of reach of children under 8.
  • Children over 8 and individuals with reduced physical, sensory, or mental abilities may use the appliance only under adult supervision and after understanding safety instructions.
  • Disconnect the appliance from the power outlet before assembly, disassembly, or cleaning.
  • Allow the appliance to cool down before cleaning.
  • Avoid contact with boiling steam or water.
  • Do not use external switching devices (e.g., timers) or extension cords.
  • Only use original spare parts and Smeg-recommended descaler products.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners, steam jets, or harsh chemicals on the machine.
  • Do not wash the brewing group in the dishwasher.
