Overview

This document describes the Sony Stereo Headset DR-EX12iP, a wired in-ear headset designed for use with Apple iPod, iPhone, and iPad devices. The headset features an in-line remote control and microphone, allowing users to manage audio playback and phone calls directly from the cord.

Function Description

The DR-EX12iP is a stereo headset that provides audio output and includes an integrated microphone for communication. It is specifically designed to be compatible with various generations of iPod touch, iPod nano, iPod classic, iPod shuffle, iPhone, and iPad models. Users are advised to update their Apple devices to the latest software version for optimal compatibility.

The in-line remote control, located on the cord, offers several functions:

  • Volume Control: Dedicated buttons for increasing (Volume +) and decreasing (Volume -) the audio volume of the connected iPod product.
  • Central Button: This multi-function button allows users to:
    • Play/pause a track with a single press.
    • Skip to the next track with a double press.
    • Skip to the previous track with a triple press.
    • Activate the "VoiceOver" feature (if available on the connected iPod) with a long press.
    • Answer an incoming call with a single press.
    • End a call with another single press.
    • Reject an incoming call by holding the button down for approximately two seconds; two low beeps will confirm the call rejection upon release.
  • Microphone: An integrated microphone enables hands-free phone calls when connected to an iPhone.

The headset utilizes 9mm dome-type driver units with CCAW (Copper-Clad Aluminum Wire) voice coils, designed to deliver high-resolution treble and midrange, complemented by powerful bass. This is achieved through 400 kJ/m³ high-power neodymium magnets.

Usage Features

Wearing the Headset:

The earbuds are marked with "R" for the right ear and "L" for the left ear. A tactile dot on the "L" marked earbud helps distinguish the left side by touch. Users should insert the respective earbuds into their ears for comfortable and secure fit.

Earbud Installation:

Proper earbud fit is crucial for optimal sound quality, especially for low-bass reproduction. The headset comes with hybrid silicone rubber earbuds in multiple sizes (Small, Medium, Large) to ensure a secure and comfortable fit for different ear shapes.

  • Checking Earbud Sizes: Transparent earbuds are distinguished by a line pattern, while black earbuds are distinguished by their inside color (Orange for Small, Green for Medium, Light Blue for Large).
  • Detaching Earbuds: To remove an earbud, hold the headset, twist, and pull the earbud off. If the earbud is slippery, it can be wrapped in a dry, soft cloth for better grip.
  • Attaching Earbuds: To attach an earbud, push the inner part of the earbud onto the headset until the projecting part of the headset is fully covered and the earbud is firmly secured. This prevents accidental detachment during use.

Cord Management:

  • Cord Slider: A cord slider allows users to adjust the split position of the cord by moving it up or down.
  • Cord Adjuster: The supplied cord adjuster helps manage the cord length. Users can wind the cord around the adjuster, up to 50 cm, to shorten it. It's important not to wind the plug or the split section of the cord, as this can strain the cord and potentially cause a wire break. To secure the cord, push it into the slot hole on the adjuster.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning the Headset:

  • Earbuds: The earbuds should be removed from the headset and washed with a mild detergent solution. Regular cleaning is important to prevent dust or earwax buildup, which can affect listening quality.
  • General Cleanliness: Users are advised to keep the headset clean at all times, particularly the inside of the rubber earbuds.

Precautions:

  • Hearing Safety: Avoid listening at high volumes for extended periods, as this may affect hearing.
  • Traffic Safety: Do not use the headset while driving or cycling to ensure traffic safety.
  • Earbud Integrity: Earbuds may deteriorate over time due to long-term storage or use. Always install earbuds firmly to prevent them from accidentally detaching and remaining in the ear, which could cause injury.
  • Static Electricity: In very dry conditions, users might experience mild tingling in their ears due to static electricity buildup. This is not a malfunction of the headset. Wearing clothes made from natural materials can help minimize this effect.
  • Replacement Parts: Optional replacement earbuds can be ordered from the nearest Sony dealer.
