Overview

The Sony DWM-02N is a digital wireless microphone designed for use in UHF synthesized wireless microphone systems. It features an interchangeable microphone capsule unit, making it suitable for various applications such as vocal performances, interviews, and speeches.

Function Description

The DWM-02N is part of Sony's DWX series, which combines professional microphone expertise with stable wireless technology and cutting-edge digital audio. It supports multi-channel simultaneous operation, encrypted transmission, and metadata transmission for monitoring multiple transmitters. The microphone also offers remote control capabilities from a receiver via a main link and an additional link, potentially streamlining professional workflows. It utilizes WiDIF-HP (Wireless Digital Interface Format, High Profile), a Sony-developed digital audio interface format that ensures secure transmission, high sound quality, low system latency, and multi-channel operation.

  • RF Power Output: Selectable at 1 mW, 10 mW, or 50 mW (e.r.p).
  • Antenna Type: Helical antenna.
  • Occupied RF Bandwidth: 192 kHz or less.
  • Audio Delay: MODE1: 1.5 ms, MODE2: 1.0 ms, MODE3: 2.1 ms.
  • Allowable Deviation of Transmission Frequency: ±6.5 ppm.
  • Type of Emission: G1E or G1D.
  • Modulation Method: π/4 Shift QPSK.
  • Maximum Input Level: -16 dBu (with 0 dB attenuator).
  • Audio Attenuator Adjustment Range (pad): 0 dB to 48 dB (in 3 dB steps).
  • Input Impedance: 4.7 kΩ or more.
  • Frequency Response: 20 Hz to 22 kHz.
  • Dimensions: Ø37.1 mm (1 1/2 inches) diameter, 194 mm (7 3/4 inches) length.
  • Mass: Approximately 235 g (8.3 oz) including batteries.
  • Wireless Remote Control: 2.4-GHz IEEE802.15.4 compliant.

Usage Features

  • Interchangeable Microphone Capsule: Allows for easy mounting of a Sony microphone capsule unit (not supplied) by screwing it onto the capsule mounting area (31.3 mm diameter, 1.0 mm pitch).
  • Wide RF Carrier Frequency Range: Covers bandwidths between 42-MHz and 72-MHz, offering operational convenience and cost efficiency across different areas.
  • Sound Pressure Level Acceptance: Capable of accepting a wide range of sound pressure levels, adjustable via the "Audio Input Level (INPUT LEVEL)" setting.
  • Three Audio Codec Modes: Users can switch between MODE1 (compatible with first-generation DWX series), MODE2 (reduced delay, improved audio quality), and MODE3 (prioritizes stable transmission performance with additional signal processing to suppress noise and interruptions).
  • Switchable RF Output Power: Adjustable to 1 mW (LOW), 10 mW (MID), or 50 mW (HIGH) via the "RF Output Power (RF POWER)" setting, with a "MAX RF POWER" setting to configure the unit's maximum output.
  • Digital Low-cut Filter: Adjustable frequency settings (20 Hz to 220 Hz) or OFF to filter out low-frequency noise.
  • Power Sleep Mode: "POWER SAVE" setting allows putting microphone functions to sleep to conserve power, with "ACTIVE" for normal operation and "SLEEP" for sleep mode (POWER indicator flashes every 2 seconds).
  • Cross Remote System: Enables monitoring and control of the transmitter from a receiver and Wireless Studio software. This includes settings like microphone name, frequency band/group/channel, RF transmission power, audio input attenuation, low-cut filter, power save, accumulated use time, audio codec mode, internal signal, and POWER switch lock. Pairing with a receiver is required for this function.
  • Encrypted Transmission Function: Offers "Secure Key Mode" for one-to-one encrypted transmission with automatically generated keys (exchangeable via USB or RF REMOTE) and "Password Mode" for group encrypted transmission using a user-defined password (up to eight characters).
  • USB Keyboard Support: An optional USB keyboard can be connected via the supplied USB adapter cable for menu operations and entering text (microphone name, password).
  • Internal Signal Generator (INTERNAL SG): Generates a 1-kHz reference level sine wave for adjusting or checking audio levels of the receiver or system.
  • POWER Switch Lock (POWER SW LOCK): Locks the POWER switch to prevent accidental turn-off or turn-on while keeping other functions active.
  • Display Brightness (BRIGHTNESS): Ten levels of brightness for the organic light-emitting diode display.
  • Automatic Dimming (DIMMER MODE): Options include "AUTO OFF" (display turns off after 30 seconds), "AUTO DIMMER" (display dims after 30 seconds), and "ALWAYS ON".
  • Battery Type Setting (BATTERY TYPE): Allows selection of battery type (TYPE1 for Sony LR6 alkaline, TYPE2 for 2000 mAh Ni-MH, TYPE3 for lithium, TYPE4 for 2500 mAh Ni-MH) for accurate battery status indication.
  • Accumulated Use Time (TIME): Displays total microphone usage time, resettable to "00:00".
  • Factory Preset: Resets all parameters to factory settings.
  • Software Version Display (VERSION): Shows the microphone's software version.
  • Identification Ring: Replaceable rings (supplied) for distinguishing multiple microphones in a system.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: For humid, dusty, or active gas environments, clean the surface and connectors with a dry, soft cloth after use. Avoid thinners, benzene, alcohol, or other chemicals.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace both batteries when the battery indication starts to flash. Check expiration dates of new batteries.
  • Environmental Considerations: Operate within 0 °C to 50 °C. Avoid operating near electrical equipment (motors, transformers, dimmers) or lighting equipment to minimize electromagnetic interference. Keep the microphone away from noisy places, air conditioning equipment, or public address loudspeakers.
  • Multi-Channel Operation: Maintain at least 30 cm (11 7/8 inches) distance from other transmitters/microphones. For digital-only systems, keep at least 4 m (13 feet) from a receiver antenna for up to 10 channels, and 6 m (20 feet) for 11 or more channels. For mixed digital/analog systems, maintain at least 6 m (20 feet) from a receiver antenna. For wide-area use without obstructions, keep 100 m (328 feet) from analog wireless systems using the same frequency.
  • Electromagnetic Interference Prevention: Turn off portable communication devices near the DWM-02N to prevent malfunction and audio interference.
