Do you have a question about the Sony HCD-SB500W and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document is a service manual for the HCD-SB500W, which is an amplifier, Super Audio CD/DVD system, and tuner section found in the DAV-SB500W. It covers models for AEP, UK, E, and Australian markets, with version 1.0 released in June 2004.

Function Description

The HCD-SB500W is a comprehensive home audio system capable of playing various disc formats and offering tuner functionalities. It integrates an amplifier, a Super Audio CD/DVD player, and a tuner into a single unit.

Disc Playback Capabilities:

The system supports a wide range of disc formats, including:

  • DVD VIDEO: Standard DVD video discs.
  • Super Audio CD: High-fidelity audio discs.
  • VIDEO CD: Video CDs, including those with PBC (Playback Control) functions (Ver. 2.0) for interactive software and high-resolution still pictures, and those without PBC functions (Ver. 1.1) for video playback and music.
  • Audio CD: Standard audio CDs.
  • CD-R/CD-RW: Supports audio data, MP3 files, and JPEG files.

Discs the system cannot play include:

  • CD-ROMs (except for .MP3, .JPG, or .JPEG extensions).
  • CD-Rs/CD-RWs not recorded in audio CD, video CD, or ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2 or Joliet extended format.
  • Data part of CD-Extras.
  • DVD-ROMs, DVD Audio discs, DVD-RAMs.
  • DVD-RWs in VR (Video Recording) mode.
  • Progressive JPEG files.
  • DVDs with a different region code than the unit.
  • Non-standard or non-circular discs (e.g., card, heart, or star shape).
  • Discs with paper or stickers on them, or those with adhesive/cellophane tape.
  • Music discs encoded with copyright protection technologies that do not conform to the Compact Disc (CD) standard.

Multi Session CD Playback:

The system can play Multi Session CDs if an MP3 audio track or JPEG image file is contained in the first session. Subsequent MP3 audio tracks or JPEG image files recorded in later sessions can also be played back. However, if audio tracks and images in music CD format or video CD format are recorded in the first session, only the first session will be played.

Region Code:

The system is region-coded and will only play DVDs labeled with the same region code as the unit. DVDs labeled with the "ALL" region code will also play. Attempting to play a DVD with an incompatible region code will display a "Playback prohibited by area limitations" message on the TV screen.

Copyrights:

This product incorporates copyright protection technology authorized by Macrovision and is intended for home and other limited viewing uses only. Reverse engineering or disassembly is prohibited. It also integrates Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic (II) adaptive matrix surround decoder, and DTS Digital Surround System.

Maintenance Features

Chip Component Replacement:

  • Never reuse a disconnected chip component.
  • Be aware that the minus side of a tantalum capacitor can be damaged by heat.

Flexible Circuit Board Repairing:

  • Maintain soldering iron temperature around 270 ˚C.
  • Avoid touching the same conductor of the circuit board more than three times.
  • Be careful not to apply force on the conductor during soldering/unsoldering.

Laser Diode Emission Check:

  • The laser beam is highly concentrated; observe from more than 30 cm away from the objective lens.

Unleaded Solder:

  • Boards requiring unleaded solder are marked with "LF". Unleaded solder melts at a higher temperature (approx. 40 ˚C higher) than ordinary solder. Soldering irons with temperature regulators should be set to approx. 350 ˚C.
  • Caution: The printed pattern (copper foil) may peel if heated too long.
  • Unleaded solder has strong viscosity, so be careful to avoid solder bridges.
  • It is best to use only unleaded solder, but it can be added to ordinary solder.

Releasing the Disc Tray Lock:

  • To unlock the disc tray (antitheft function), press the A and x buttons simultaneously for five seconds. The message "UNLOCKED" will be displayed.

Replacing the DMB07 Board:

  • If replacing the DMB07 board, "Drive Auto Adjustment" cannot be performed correctly. Memory must be initialized by setting test mode, then "DRIVE MANUAL OPERATION," then "2-6, Memory Check," and finally pressing the CLEAR key.

Handling Discs:

  • Handle discs by the edge to keep them clean; do not touch the surface.
  • Do not stick paper or tape on discs.
  • Avoid exposing discs to direct sunlight or heat sources (e.g., hot air ducts, parked cars).
  • Store discs in their cases after playing.

Cleaning Discs:

  • Clean discs with a cleaning cloth, wiping from the center outwards.
  • Do not use solvents (benzine, thinner), commercially available cleaners, or anti-static sprays for vinyl LPs.
