Overview

This document describes the Sper Scientific Sugar/Brix Refractometer, available in two models: 300001 (0-32% Brix) and 300002 (28-62% Brix). This portable, precision optical instrument is designed to measure the concentration of sugar in aqueous solutions. It utilizes a Brix scale, which is accurate and easy to read, making it suitable for quality assurance, process control requirements, and research applications.

Function Description:

Refractometers operate on the principle that as the concentration or density of a solution increases, its refractive index changes proportionately. The device measures the refractive angle, which is then registered on an internal scale. A higher concentration of sugar in the solution results in a higher reading on the scale. The instrument consists of a prism, a cover plate, a barrel, an eyepiece with a focus ring, and a calibration screw.

Usage Features:

The refractometer is straightforward to operate, involving a few key steps:

  1. Preparation: Open the cover plate and clean the prism with a soft cloth to prevent scratching.
  2. Focus Adjustment: Aim the refractometer towards a light source and rotate the eyepiece until the focus is clear.
  3. Zero Point Calibration:
    • Open the cover plate.
    • Apply a few drops of the appropriate calibration solution onto the prism platform. For Model 300001, use distilled water. For Model 300002, use the included 28% Brix solution.
    • Close the cover plate.
    • Turn the calibration screw until the dark and light boundary line aligns with the bottom line of the scale. This bottom line is 0 for Model 300001 and 28 for Model 300002.
    • It is crucial that the temperature of the zero-point calibration solution matches that of the test solution. If there are variations in temperature, the zero point should be adjusted every 30 minutes.
  4. Sample Measurement:
    • Carefully dry the prism platform and cover plate after calibration.
    • Place a few drops of the test solution on the prism.
    • Close the cover plate, ensuring the solution spreads evenly.
    • Aim the front of the refractometer towards a light source and focus the eyepiece on the boundary line.
    • The boundary line will indicate the concentration of sugar in the test sample at 20°C.

Maintenance Features:

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of the device:

  • Cleaning: After each use, clean the prism with distilled water and a soft cloth to remove any residue. Avoid scratching the surface of the prism.
  • Storage: Store the refractometer in a dry, clean, and non-corrosive environment.
  • Handling: Avoid strong impacts. Never submerge the unit, and prevent liquid from seeping into the unit's body.
  • Important Note: This refractometer is specifically designed for solutions containing sugar solute. Test solutions containing salt will affect the reading and may lead to inaccurate results.

Warranty:

Sper Scientific provides a five (5) year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of purchase. The warranty covers repair or replacement of defective units. If the model is discontinued, an equivalent Sper Scientific product will be substituted. The warranty does not cover probes, batteries, battery leakage, or damage from accident, tampering, misuse, or abuse. Opening the meter to expose its electronics will break the waterproof seal and void the warranty. To obtain warranty service, the unit should be shipped postage prepaid to Sper Scientific Ltd. The defective unit must be accompanied by a description of the problem and the return address. Product registration online at www.sperwarranty.com within 10 days of purchase is recommended.
