Overview

The Titmus V4 / Titmus V2 is a vision screener designed for assessing visual performance in both first-time and experienced users. Manufactured by Sperian Protection Optical, Inc., these ergonomically-designed, precision-built stereoscopic instruments provide accurate, valid, and reliable measurements of visual performance, emphasizing convenience and ease of administration. The device is capable of screening for various visual functions beyond basic acuity, including binocularity, muscle balance, color perception, depth perception, and acuity at near and far distances.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Titmus V4 / Titmus V2 vision screener is to identify visual abnormalities that may require further visual examination and correction. It screens for a wide range of visual functions, including:

  • Acuity: Near (14") and Far (20') vision.
  • Binocularity: The coordinated use of both eyes.
  • Muscle Balance: Assessing for conditions like esophoria, exophoria, hyperphoria, and hypophoria, which indicate muscle imbalances.
  • Color Perception: Identifying color deficiencies, particularly shades of red and green.
  • Depth Perception (Stereopsis): The ability to perceive the relative distance of objects in visual space.
  • Peripheral Vision: Screening for horizontal peripheral vision at various angles (85°, 70°, 55°, and Nasal 45°).
  • Intermediate Vision: Testing vision at distances such as 19, 22, 26, 32, and 40 inches (50, 57, 67, 80, and 100 cm) using optional intermediate lenses.
  • Plus Lens Testing: Used for children's vision to detect excessive farsightedness, with optional lenses like +1.00, +1.50, +1.75, and +2.25.
  • Day/Night Illumination: The Titmus V4 offers both daylight and night vision testing illumination levels.

The instrument utilizes a drum with eight test slides for various assessments. The Titmus V4 model features a control panel for operation, while the Titmus V2 model uses built-in membrane switches.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Supply: 110-240 VAC, 0.4A-0.2A, 50/60 Hz.
  • Fuse Rating: 2 A, 250 V, Type - T (time delay).
  • Cords: 1. Power cord (3 meters length); 2. Titmus V4 only: Control panel cord (IEEE 1394 FireWire connector, 1.00 meter length).
  • Illumination: As per ISO 8596 and ANSI Z80.21 Standards.
  • Dimensions (closed condition): 11.00 X 17.00 X 7.75 inches (28 X 43 X 19 cm).
  • Weight: 13 lbs / 6 kg.
  • Temperature: +50°F to +104°F (+10°C to +40°C).
  • Humidity: 30% to 75% (non-condensing).
  • Pressure: 80-106 kPa.
  • Altitude: 1000 ft below sea level to 6000 ft above sea level.
  • Compliance: Conforms to UL, CSA, and CE Standards (AAMI ES 60601-1, CSA-C22.2 No. 601.1-M90, IEC 60601-1, EN 60601-1, Medical Device Directive 93/42/EEC).
  • Classification: Class I, Annex IX of MDD 93/42/EEC; Non-sterile, Non-measuring device.
  • Patent Numbers: US 7,390,091; US 6,505,937.

Usage Features:

  • Height Adjustment: The instrument's height can be adjusted to accommodate both children and adults, whether seated or standing, ensuring accurate testing. A lock mechanism secures the instrument in a closed position for transport and prevents accidental height changes during use.
  • Far/Near Lever: A lever allows the operator to switch between far (20 feet) and near (14 inches) vision testing. For near vision testing, patients wearing bifocals, multifocals, or progressive lenses are instructed to position their glasses correctly.
  • Intermediate Lens Slots: Dedicated slots are available for inserting intermediate or plus lenses for specialized testing.
  • Head Position Sensor: Detects if the patient's head is correctly positioned in the comfortable foam headrest. The Titmus V4 control panel allows for deactivating this sensor if needed, useful for squirming children.
  • Occlude Shutters: Buttons on both models activate shutters to occlude each eye, with indicator lights showing which eye is being tested.
  • Test Slide Advance/Reverse:
    • Titmus V4: Control panel buttons allow advancing (+) or reversing (-) through test slides.
    • Titmus V2: A wheel on the instrument's side is used to advance or reverse test slides.
  • Control Panel (Titmus V4 only): Provides comprehensive control over light source condition, test distance (near, intermediate, far), peripheral vision screening, day/night illumination, test slide position, and a reset function.
  • Membrane Switches (Titmus V2 only): Integrated switches for occluding eyes and peripheral vision screening.
  • Portability: Designed for easy transport, with an optional soft-sided carrying case with wheels. The instrument can also be carried using a back pocket.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning:
    • Headrest Foam: Can be repeatedly cleaned and disinfected with a disinfectant solution after each patient to prevent the spread of diseases.
    • Exterior: Easily cleaned with a soft cloth dampened in a mild soap and water solution.
    • Viewing Lenses: Cleaned with lens cleaning wipes and fog eliminator cloths (supplied accessories).
    • Test Slides: Rarely require cleaning as they are in an enclosed module. If needed, they can be cleaned with a household-type glass cleaner using a soft, damp cloth, ensuring they are removed from the drum first and not immersed in cleaning solution.
  • Storage: A dust cover is provided to protect the instrument from dust accumulation when not in use.
  • Recommended Service Schedule:
    • Clean/disinfect headrest foam: After each patient or as required.
    • Clean front surface of unit: After each patient or as required.
    • Inspect instrument: Daily.
    • Clean front test lens: Daily.
    • Clean outside of instrument: Weekly.
    • Clean test slides: Monthly.
    • Replace light module: As indicated by the control panel or if tests seem very dimly lit.
  • Replacing Light Module: Requires contacting a Service Center.
  • Changing Slides: Involves removing the top cover, rolling back a rubber ring, and pulling a tab to access and replace slides in the drum.
  • Replacing the Fuse: Requires a flat head screwdriver. The fuse holder has a safety feature that disconnects power if the instrument is plugged in. Both fuses must be replaced.
