  If your Sportsman Portable Generator starts but doesn't produce power, or the power output seems too low, it might be due to the governor screw needing adjustment. To address this, plug in a voltmeter to VAC and check the voltage reading. It should ideally be between 110 and 120 volts. If the reading is too high or too low, carefully adjust the governor screw, found above the pull start on the green metal shroud. Important: Only attempt this adjustment if you have a voltmeter and are familiar with its use, as incorrect adjustments can damage personal property. Turn the screw clockwise to increase the voltage and idle speed. You might need to compensate for the increased idle speed using the idle screw.

Check that the choke is set to “Closed/Choke”. Make sure the engine has gasoline, and if the gasoline is old or contaminated, drain it and add new gasoline. Inspect the spark plug for dirt or damage, cleaning or replacing it as needed. Also, verify the oil level is at the bottom of the threads on the dipstick hole, adding or replacing oil if necessary. Confirm the spark plugs are sparking by following instructions. Check that two wires on the back of the switch are connected. Lastly, if the generator has been sitting for a while, the carburetor might be gummed up and require cleaning.
