This manual describes the SRAM Eagle AXS™ drivetrain system, an integrated high-performance ecosystem designed for mountain bikes. The system features wireless electronic shifting, allowing for a new ergonomic experience based on touching a button rather than pushing a lever. This design aims to provide faster, more consistent shifts, enabling riders to shift when desired, even under load, without needing to plan around terrain.
The SRAM Eagle AXS™ is a complete drivetrain system that integrates several components to deliver a seamless and high-performance riding experience. At its core, it offers wireless electronic shifting, which eliminates the need for traditional shift cables and provides a cleaner cockpit. The system gathers useful data, such as the number of shifts made and the frequency of cog usage, which can help riders make smarter choices on chainring size and optimize their setup.
The drivetrain components include cranks with a chainring, a derailleur with a battery, a controller with a clamp, a cassette, a chain, a charger/cord, and a chain gap tool. The AXS™ app serves as a central hub for personalization and connectivity, allowing users to customize controller touchpoints and access system data. All AXS™ components connect via a proprietary encrypted wireless network, and additional connectivity includes ANT+ and Bluetooth. The system is designed to be robust, with features like a gearbox and motor clutch, a shorter cage, and increased chain wrap contributing to its durability. It also boasts extreme water and dust proofness, meeting the IP69K international standard, which means it can withstand regular pressurized cleaning and perform reliably in adverse weather conditions.
The Eagle AXS™ system is designed for ease of use and personalization. The AXS™ portion of the groupset name is pronounced "access," reflecting its user-friendly approach. Riders can customize controller touchpoints through the AXS™ app, choosing functions like inboard shift, outboard shift, or dropper post control. This means a single touchpoint can be assigned to control an electronic Reverb AXS™ dropper seatpost, enhancing riding efficiency.
The system's battery life is easy to monitor: a green light on the shifter indicates a full or near-full charge, a red light indicates half charge, and a flashing red light signals the need for charging. A fully charged derailleur battery provides approximately 20 hours or more of riding time. To conserve battery life, the system enters power-save mode when the bike is stationary. The derailleur battery weighs 25g, is detachable with a single clip, and is "hot swappable" with other AXS™ components like the RockShox Reverb AXS™ seatpost or SRAM RED®/Force eTap AXS™ road groups. Charging takes approximately one hour.
While the AXS™ app offers personalization and data access, it is not strictly necessary for riding; users can simply mount the drivetrain, pair it, and ride. The app is primarily for fine-tuning settings and accessing accumulated data. The pairing button on the controller serves two purposes: pairing with the derailleur and trimming the rear derailleur, effectively replacing the traditional barrel adjuster.
The Eagle AXS™ system is compatible with all bikes and frames that currently support Eagle™ drivetrains. It requires an XD™ driver body for cassette installation and uses SRAM DUB™ bottom brackets, which are compatible with almost all current BB standards. The system's X-DOME Eagle™ cassette offers a 10-50T gear range. SRAM RED eTap AXS™ shift levers are compatible with Eagle AXS™ rear derailleurs, allowing for drop bar bike setups with an Eagle AXS™ drivetrain. The system is also compatible with road Blip Box and control buttons.
Maintenance of the SRAM Eagle AXS™ system is designed to be straightforward. The AXS™ app facilitates firmware updates, which can be handled directly through the app without the need for a dongle.
For chain maintenance, SRAM Eagle AXS™ chains are compatible with commonly available bicycle chain lubes. The Eagle™ chain architecture and design are the same as SRAM's current XX1 Eagle™ chain, ensuring similar durability and lifespan. However, SRAM RED AXS™ road chains are not cross-compatible with SRAM Eagle™ drivetrains due to different dimensions; the derailleur, cassette, and chain should always match.
The PowerLock® on SRAM Eagle AXS™ chains is a one-time use component and should be replaced with a new one after removal to ensure security. The RAINBOW chain and cassette feature a PVD Titanium Nitride finish.
When washing a bike equipped with AXS™ components, while they are water and dust proof to the IP69K standard, it is recommended to treat them like other ball-bearing equipped components (hubs, headsets, bottom brackets). This means avoiding direct blasting of water at seals between the derailleur and battery, derailleur pivot points, or component subassembly junction points.
The Eagle AXS™ derailleur incorporates an Overload Clutch, which protects the wireless motor by disengaging the gearbox in the event of an impact, allowing the derailleur to move freely and then instantly return to its position. This also helps protect the derailleur and hanger from damage.
The Eagle AXS™ B-gap tool is specifically designed to set the correct position for the AXS™ derailleur and is different from the current Eagle™ B-Gap tool. While most standard and professional tools will work on Eagle AXS™ drivetrains, it is important to ensure tool compatibility with each component.
