This document outlines the operating and installation procedures for the Stiebel Eltron Mini™ series tankless electric water heater, a device designed to provide instantaneous hot water.
The Mini™ tankless electric water heater is a compact appliance that heats water on demand, eliminating the need for a storage tank. Unlike conventional water heaters that store and continuously heat a volume of water, the Mini™ heats water instantaneously as it flows through the unit. This design contributes to greater energy efficiency by preventing standby losses. The heating elements are activated by a flow switch when a hot water faucet connected to the Mini™ is opened. The temperature of the hot water delivered by the Mini™ is influenced by the wattage of the heating element, the temperature of the incoming cold water, and the water flow rate through the unit. To ensure proper operation, the Mini™ must be carefully matched to its intended application.
The Mini™ series is suitable for various hand-washing applications in the U.S. and Canada, including restroom sinks in commercial/industrial facilities and homes, kitchen areas in commercial/industrial facilities and homes, cabins, and specialized uses in photo developing shops and laboratories. It can also be used for whole apartments and homes in warm climate zones, such as the Caribbean region, Central America, and Mexico, where ambient water temperatures are higher.
The Mini™ is designed for ease of use and continuous hot water supply as long as the faucet is open. Before initial start-up or after any interruption to the water supply (e.g., due to frost risk or pipe work), it is crucial to purge air from the water pipes to prevent damage to the bare-wire heating system. This involves turning off the circuit breaker, opening a hot water tap downstream of the unit until water flows continuously and is free of air, and then turning the circuit breaker back on.
For optimal temperature at a single spout mixer-type faucet, users can restrict cold water flow by partially closing the cold water shut-off valve under the sink until the cold and hot water flow rates are approximately equal. This allows for fine-tuning the desired water temperature.
The unit is equipped with a safety pressure cut-out. In the event this cut-out is tripped, the user should first turn off the circuit breakers, open the hot valve to release pressure, reset the safety pressure cut-out, and then turn the circuit breakers back on.
The Mini™ tankless water heaters are designed for a long service life, with actual life expectancy varying based on water quality and usage. The unit itself does not require regular maintenance. However, to ensure consistent water flow, periodic cleaning and descaling of the aerator of the faucet or shower head are recommended.
The Mini™ also features a built-in filter screen located in the cold water inlet connection. This filter screen should be cleaned from time to time to prevent scale blockage or dirt accumulation. To clean the filter screen, the cold water supply to the unit must be turned off at the isolating valve, the screen removed, cleaned, and then reinstalled in its original position. It is critical to always shut off power and water to the unit before removing the filter screen to prevent serious bodily injury or death.
For general cleaning of the unit's housing, a damp cloth is sufficient. Abrasive or corrosive cleaning agents should not be used. Any maintenance work beyond cleaning the filter screen, such as checking electrical safety, must be performed by a qualified installer. The Mini™ does not contain any other parts serviceable by a lay person. In case of malfunction, a licensed plumber or electrician should be contacted.
The warranty specifically notes that damage to the unit due to hard water (high mineral content) is not covered. Therefore, in areas with hard water, it is necessary to install a water softening device to prevent damage to the Mini™ unit.
