Overview

The STIHL BC 230 is a robust cultivator designed for loosening and preparing soil, working in mulches, and furrowing. It is a gasoline-powered machine with a two-stroke engine, intended for agricultural and gardening tasks.

Function Description:

The primary function of the STIHL BC 230 is to till soil using its rotor blades. The engine drives an output shaft to which the rotor blades are attached, allowing them to break up and aerate the soil. The cultivator features a control handle and handlebar for user guidance and control, along with wheels for transport. A cultivator spur helps regulate working speed and depth. The machine is started via a starter grip and controlled by a slide control for starting, running, and stopping the engine, and a throttle trigger to adjust engine speed. A manual fuel pump assists in easier engine starts.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Displacement: 36.3 cm³
  • Engine power to ISO 8893: 1.48 kW (2.0 bhp) at 9,000 rpm
  • Idle speed: 2,800 rpm
  • Max. output shaft speed: 290 rpm
  • Approved spark plug: Bosch WSR 6 F from STIHL
  • Electrode gap of the spark plug: 0.5 mm
  • Dry weight without blades: 20.0 kg
  • Max. fuel tank capacity: 810 cc (0.81 l)
  • Blade diameter: 250 mm
  • Working width: 300 mm
  • Fuel mixture: Gasoline and two-stroke engine oil in a 1:50 ratio (STIHL recommends STIHL MotoMix or high-performance two-stroke engine oil meeting JASO FB, FC, FD, ISO-L-EGB, EGC, or EGD standards). Gasoline should have an octane number of at least 90 RON and ethanol content no more than 10%.
  • Sound pressure level Lpeq (ISO 11201): 90 dB(A)
  • Sound power level Lw (ISO 3744): 103 dB(A)
  • Vibration level ahy (ISO 1033): Control handle: 17.5 m/s², Left handle: 19.5 m/s²

Usage Features:

The STIHL BC 230 is designed for user-friendly operation with several features enhancing control and safety.

  • Handlebar and Control Handle: These components provide a secure grip and allow the user to steer and control the cultivator effectively. The handlebar is secured to the cultivator with wing screws, allowing for adjustment or removal.
  • Wheels: The cultivator is equipped with wheels for easy transport to and from the work area. These can be mounted or removed depending on the task (tilling vs. transport).
  • Cultivator Spur: This adjustable component helps to regulate the working depth and speed, allowing the user to adapt the machine to different soil conditions and desired results.
  • Choke Lever and Manual Fuel Pump: These features facilitate easier starting of the engine, especially when cold. The manual fuel pump primes the carburetor, while the choke lever enriches the fuel mixture for initial ignition.
  • Throttle Trigger and Lockout: The throttle trigger controls engine speed, while the lockout prevents accidental activation, enhancing safety.
  • Slide Control: This multi-position control allows the user to easily switch between starting, running, and stopping the engine.
  • Rotor Blades: The blades are designed for efficient tilling and can be fitted or removed as needed. The working width is fixed at 300 mm.
  • High Altitude Adjustment: The carburetor can be adjusted for optimal engine performance when operating at high altitudes, preventing overheating and ensuring consistent power.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the STIHL BC 230. The manual provides clear instructions for various maintenance tasks.

  • Cleaning: The cultivator, air filter, and rotor blades should be cleaned regularly. The air filter can be washed with soapy water, rinsed, dried, and then impregnated with two-stroke engine oil.
  • Spark Plug Maintenance: The spark plug should be cleaned and checked periodically. If corroded, it should be replaced. The electrode gap must be maintained at 0.5 mm.
  • Gearbox Lubrication: The gearbox requires lubrication after every 30 hours of operation, using NLGI class 00 grease. The gear grease should be changed by a STIHL servicing dealer after every 60 hours.
  • Fuel System Maintenance: The fuel tank and pickup body (filter) in the fuel tank should be cleaned monthly by a STIHL servicing dealer. The pickup body should be replaced every 12 months.
  • Throttle Cable Adjustment: The throttle cable can be adjusted to ensure proper engine idling and acceleration.
  • Storage: For storage longer than 3 months, the fuel tank should be drained and cleaned by a STIHL servicing dealer, and the blades removed. The cultivator should be stored in a clean, dry place, out of reach of children.
  • Professional Servicing: For complex repairs, fuel tank cleaning, gear grease changes, or if the cultivator or blades are damaged, users are advised to contact a STIHL servicing dealer. The user is not intended to repair the cultivator or blades themselves.
