Overview

The Streamlight Scorpion series flashlight is a compact and convenient illumination tool designed for dependable service and powerful performance. This series includes the Scorpion, Scorpion LED, Scorpion X, and Scorpion HL models, each offering distinct features tailored to various user needs.

Function Description

The primary function of the Scorpion series flashlights is to provide portable illumination. Depending on the model, this illumination can range from a focused beam to a wider flood, with some models offering multiple light output modes such as high, low, and strobe. The Scorpion (xenon) model utilizes a xenon bi-pin bulb, while the Scorpion LED, Scorpion X, and Scorpion HL models employ LEDs, which are fixed at optimum focus for consistent light output. The Scorpion HL, in particular, stands out with its programmable multi-function LED, allowing users to customize their lighting experience through different programs.

Usage Features

All Scorpion series flashlights feature a tail cap switch for convenient operation, eliminating the need for awkward two-handed twisting or turning. This design allows for momentary activation with a press or tap, and constant-on operation by clicking the switch to lock it in place.

For the Scorpion (xenon) and Scorpion LED models:

  • Activation: Press the tail switch for momentary activation or push and click to lock on.
  • Focus (Scorpion xenon only): The Scorpion (xenon) model offers an adjustable focus. Users can rotate the head to transition the beam from a long-range, pinpoint focus to a wider, softer flood effect suitable for close-up tasks. The Scorpion LED and Scorpion X models, however, use fixed-focus LEDs and are not adjustable.

For the Scorpion X (Multi-function LED) model, multiple output modes are available:

  • High: From the off position, press and hold the switch for momentary activation, or click to lock on.
  • Strobe: From the off position, quickly double-press and hold the switch for momentary activation, or click to lock on.
  • Low: From the off position, quickly triple-press and hold the switch for momentary activation, or click to lock on.

The Scorpion HL (Programmable Multi-function LED) model offers advanced programmability and multiple modes, shipped from the factory with a default High-Strobe-Low program.

  • Activation: Light press or tap for momentary operation, or press until a click for constant-on operation.
  • High Mode: Tap and hold, then click to lock on; click again for off.
  • Strobe Mode: Fast double-tap (within 0.4 seconds) and hold, then click to lock on; click again for off.
  • Low Mode: Fast triple-tap (within 0.4 seconds per tap) and hold, then click to lock on; click again for off.
  • Programmability (TEN-TAP™): The Scorpion HL features a TEN-TAP™ programmable switch that allows users to select one of three different programs: High-Strobe-Low (Factory Default), High Only, or Low-High. To change the program, from the "Off" position, rapidly tap the switch 9 times (within 0.4 seconds per tap) and hold it down the 10th time. Continue holding the switch until the light turns off (approximately 1 second), then release the switch.

Safety Considerations:

  • LED Radiation: For Scorpion, Scorpion LED, Scorpion X, and Scorpion HL models, a caution regarding LED radiation (RG-2) is issued: "DO NOT STARE INTO BEAM, MAY BE HARMFUL TO EYES."
  • Heat Generation: The Scorpion HL, when operated for extended periods, may become uncomfortably warm. This is considered normal for powerful LED flashlights of similar size and performance and does not present a burn hazard, especially for tactical short-period use.
  • Strobe Mode: A warning is issued regarding the use of light in "strobe" mode, as it may cause seizures in persons with photosensitive epilepsy.
  • Xenon Bulb Heat: The Scorpion (xenon) utilizes a high-wattage xenon bulb that can get very hot. Users are warned not to place the Scorpion face-down against flat or flammable surfaces and to transport or store it in a way that minimizes accidental activation.

Battery Installation/Removal

The process for installing and removing batteries is straightforward:

  1. Unscrew the rubber-armored grip flashlight barrel.
  2. Remove any depleted batteries.
  3. Insert new batteries into the barrel, negative end first, with the positive ends pointing toward the flashlight head.
  4. Screw the barrel back onto the flashlight head and tighten it securely.

Battery Safety Warning:

  • Recommended Batteries: Users are strongly advised to use ONLY Streamlight, Panasonic, Sanyo, Energizer, or Duracell lithium batteries in these products.
  • Risks: Using inferior quality lithium batteries, mixing brands, or combining old and new batteries can lead to leakage, fire, explosion, burns, and serious personal injury.
  • Further Precautions: To mitigate risks, users should never recharge, misuse, short-circuit, disassemble, improperly store or discard, or expose any brand of lithium battery to high temperatures.

Maintenance Features

Proper care and maintenance ensure the longevity and dependable service of the Scorpion series flashlights:

  • O-ring Lubrication: The O-ring area on the barrel should be kept lubricated to maintain its sealing integrity.
  • Rubber Armored Grip: The rubber-armored grip on the flashlight barrel requires minimal maintenance.
  • Replacement Parts: It is important to use genuine Streamlight replacement parts for any necessary repairs or replacements.

Bulb Replacement (Scorpion xenon only):

  • LED Models: LED models (Scorpion LED, Scorpion X, Scorpion HL) do not require bulb replacement as LEDs have a significantly longer lifespan. Users should not attempt to change the LED in these models.
  • Xenon Bulb Life: The xenon bi-pin bulb in the Scorpion (xenon) model is designed to last through three to five sets of batteries under continuous use. Intermittent use may result in shorter bulb life due to repeated start-up shock and higher voltage spikes.
  • Replacement Process:
    1. Unscrew the flashlight head from the barrel.
    2. Remove the bulb holder assembly.
    3. Always wear safety glasses and gloves. Allow a hot bulb to cool before handling.
    4. Pry off the cup-shaped silver-colored contact on the bottom of the bulb holder assembly.
    5. Remove the spare bulb (located inside the bulb holder assembly) and replace the contact.
    6. Firmly grasp the burned-out bulb and pull it from the holder assembly.
    7. Grasp the replacement bulb and direct its pins straight into the holes in the holder assembly until the bulb is firmly seated.
