Overview

This document describes the Electric Scarifier + Dethatcher, Model AJ801E, a walk-behind tool designed for lawn care. It is a double-insulated appliance, meaning it does not require grounding and uses two systems of insulation for safety.

Function Description

The Electric Scarifier + Dethatcher is a versatile tool with two primary functions: scarifying and dethatching. It is intended for private domestic use in gardens and is not suitable for commercial trade.

When used as a scarifier, the machine employs specially adapted prongs (slicing blades) to scratch through and between the grass. This action collects and removes unwanted parts from the lawn while leaving the grass blades intact. Simultaneously, it scarifies the ground, which improves aeration. Scarifying is recommended in spring (April-May) with an increased depth setting to allow the lawn to recover. A decreased depth setting can be used in late summer during wet conditions. It should not be used during hot, dry, or excessively steep periods.

As a dethatcher, the machine uses fine needles (spring steel raking tines) to scratch the surface of the lawn. This process simultaneously picks up light debris, enhancing oxygen absorption, airing, and drainage. Raking is recommended every 4-6 weeks to allow greater air penetration to the grass roots, promoting a healthy lawn.

The machine is equipped with a thatch collection bag to gather removed debris. It is crucial to always operate the machine with the thatch collection bag securely fitted to prevent flying debris. The bag should be emptied frequently, ideally when half full, to maintain optimal performance.

The cutting depth is adjustable through a 5-position lever, allowing users to select the appropriate depth for scarifying or raking based on lawn type and grass height. A negative raking depth indicates that the tines/blades penetrate the soil layer.

Usage Features

Assembly and Setup: Before operation, the handle bars must be connected to the motor housing using Phillips screws and secured with knobs and bolts. The extension cord restraint holder is hung on the upper handle, and the appliance cord is connected to an outdoor extension cord, secured by the restraint holder and cord clips. It is critical not to connect the machine to the power supply until assembly is complete.

Starting and Stopping: To start, the safety lock button must be pressed and held while pulling the switch lever. Once the machine powers on, the safety lock button can be released. To stop, simply release the switch lever. Users are warned that the tine cylinder continues to rotate briefly after the unit is switched off, and tilting or carrying the unit while the motor is running or touching the cylinder while rotating can cause severe personal injury.

Operation Guidelines:

  • Always read, understand, and follow all instructions in the manual before starting.
  • Thoroughly inspect the work area and remove all foreign objects that could be picked up and launched by the machine.
  • Wear personal protective equipment, including safety glasses with side shields or goggles, ear defenders, and a face or dust mask if the environment is dusty.
  • Operate only in daylight or good artificial light.
  • Wear adequate outer garments, protective footwear, rubber gloves, and substantial non-slip footwear.
  • Do not operate in wet grass or damp locations.
  • Maintain proper footing and balance; walk, never run, with the machine.
  • Exercise extreme caution on gravel drives, walks, or roads, and when reversing or pulling the machine.
  • Stop the motor and disconnect the power supply when leaving the operating position, before unclogging tines, or when repairing, adjusting, or inspecting the machine.
  • Do not overload the machine by attempting to dethatch too deep or too fast.
  • Work in slight overlapping rows, moving in straight lines along one side of the lawn to ensure complete coverage.
  • Avoid operating on excessively steep slopes or near drop-offs, ditches, or embankments.
  • Keep children, bystanders, and pets away from the work area. Never let children operate the machine.
  • The machine has overload protection, which activates if too much material builds up, the material is too large, or there is too much resistance. If activated, switch off, disconnect, let it cool, and eliminate the cause.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • Keep cutting edges sharp and clean for optimal and safest performance.
  • Inspect the power cord and extension cords periodically for damage and have them repaired by an authorized service facility if necessary.
  • Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and grease.
  • Store the idle tool indoors in a dry, high, or locked-up place out of reach of children.
  • Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting, shut off the motor, disconnect the power supply, and wait until all moving parts have come to a complete stop.
  • Ensure all nuts, bolts, and screws are tight.
  • Allow the product to cool before storing.
  • Check the thatch collection bag frequently for wear or deterioration.
  • Examine the product regularly and replace worn or damaged parts for safety.
  • Check that covers and guards are undamaged and correctly fitted.
  • Clean the machine with a brush or cloth; do not use solvents or water.
  • Store the machine in a dry place, cleaning and oiling all screws and bolts for a long service life.

Cutting Device Replacement: The machine comes preassembled with the scarifying cylinder, and a dethatcher cylinder is included for changing functions.

  • Always switch off the machine, disconnect it from the power supply, and let it cool down before changing the cutting device.
  • Wear safety gloves when handling cutting devices as they are very sharp and can become hot during use.
  • Remove the thatch collection bag.
  • Place the machine upside down on a flat, stable surface.
  • Loosen the two bolts with a suitable wrench, remove them along with the spring washers and the attached cutting device.
  • Lift the bearing and pull the cutting device from the drive shaft.
  • Align and insert the new cutting device by sliding the hex nut into the socket of the drive shaft and fixing the bearing to the support with the bolts and spring washers.
  • Ensure the cutting device (dethatcher cylinder) is inserted properly, with the semi-circle of the cylinder facing downward into the unit.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues such as the motor not starting, product not reaching full power, or unsatisfactory results. Solutions include checking power connections, using appropriate extension cords, cleaning air vents, replacing the tine cylinder, or adjusting the scarifying depth. All further inspection, maintenance, and repair work should be performed by an authorized service center or qualified specialist.
