Overview

This document is an instruction manual for a SuperHandy Log Splitter, model GUT065. It provides comprehensive information regarding the device's function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The SuperHandy Log Splitter is a home-use model designed to split logs. It operates by pushing a log against a wedge, splitting it along its grain. The device is equipped with a "ZHB" control system that requires two-hand operation for safety: the left hand controls the hydraulic control lever, and the right hand controls the pushbutton switch. The log splitter will stop if either hand is removed from its control, and the log pusher will only return to its starting position after both hands release the controls. A trigger-type lock-out device is incorporated to prevent accidental activation of the hydraulic control lever.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Item No.: GUT065
  • Motor: 120V 60Hz, 1 3/4HP, S3 40%, IP54
  • Log Capacity:
    • Diameter Max.: 9.8 inches (24.9 cm)
    • Length Max.: 20.5 inches (52.1 cm)
  • Splitting Force: 13227 lbs (6 Ton)
  • Hydraulic Pressure: 19 Mpa
  • Hydraulic Oil Capacity: 0.85 Gallons (3.22 liters)
  • Overall Size (Without Support Stand):
    • Length: 1030 mm (40.55 inches)
    • Width: 295 mm (11.61 inches)
    • Height: 470 mm (18.50 inches)
  • Weight: 45.4 kg (100.1 lbs)
  • Duty Cycle (S3 40%): Intermittent periodic duty with a 10-minute load cycle, 4 minutes of operation at constant load, and 6 minutes de-energized and at rest.
  • Operating Conditions: Ambient temperatures between 41°F and 104°F (+5°C and 40°C), altitudes no more than 3280FT (1000m) above M.S.L., and surrounding humidity less than 50% at 104°F (40°C).
  • Storage/Transport Conditions: Ambient temperatures between -13°F and 131°F (-25°C and 55°C).
  • Electrical Requirements: Standard 110V+10% (60Hz+1Hz) electrical supply with protection devices for under-voltage, overvoltage, over-current, and a residual current device (RCD) with a maximum residual current rated at 0.03A. The BSI approved plug and socket combination should have at least IP44D protection.

Usage Features

  • Assembly: The log splitter comes partially assembled. Users need to align holes and attach the wheels to the rear frame using bolts, washers, and clips, then attach caps onto the wheels.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always read and understand the manual and labels.
    • Wear eye protection, hearing protection, protective gloves, and safety footwear.
    • Ensure the work area is clean, well-lit, and free from slippery surfaces or flammable materials.
    • Do not operate under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication.
    • Fix the log splitter on level ground to prevent slipping.
    • Inspect the log splitter before use, ensuring guards are in place and damaged parts are replaced.
    • Use appropriate extension cords (no longer than 32.81FT, section no less than 2.5mm²).
    • Prevent electrical shock by ensuring proper grounding and avoiding contact with grounded surfaces.
    • Keep children and bystanders away from the work area.
    • Operate the log splitter with only one person.
    • Ensure logs are free of nails or foreign objects and cut square.
    • Do not overreach or stand on the log splitter.
    • Keep hands away from moving parts and splits in the log.
    • Do not force the tool to split logs larger or harder than its capacity.
    • Never leave the tool running unattended.
    • Disconnect power when not in use or during maintenance.
  • Bleed Screw: Before operation, the Bleed Screw must be loosened by several rotations to allow air to flow in and out of the oil tank. Airflow should be detectable during operation. It must be tightened before moving the log splitter to prevent oil leakage. Failure to loosen it can cause damage to the hydraulic system seals.
  • Max Pressure Limiting Screw: This screw is factory-sealed and set to ensure the log splitter operates within its 6-ton capacity. Unauthorized adjustment is strictly prohibited as it can lead to hydraulic pump failure, serious injury, and machine damage.
  • Log Placement: Logs must be set firmly on the log retaining plates and work table. They should be split in the direction of their growing grain. Do not place logs across the splitter, attempt to split two logs simultaneously, or force the blade by splitting the log on its upper part.
  • Freeing a Jammed Log: If a log jams, release both controls, allow the log pusher to return to its starting position, then insert a wedge wood under the jammed log. Restart the splitter to push the wedge wood further under the jammed log. Repeat with sharper slope wedge woods until the log is freed. Do not attempt to knock the jammed log off, as this can damage the machine or cause accidents.

Maintenance Features

  • Hydraulic Oil Replacement: Replace hydraulic oil every 150 hours of use.
    1. Ensure all moving parts have stopped and the log splitter is unplugged.
    2. Unscrew the Oil Drain Bolt with Dipstick.
    3. Turn the log splitter on its support leg side over a 4-liter container to drain the old oil.
    4. Turn the log splitter to the motor side.
    5. Refill with fresh hydraulic oil to the specified capacity (0.85 gallons). Recommended oils include SHELL Tellus 22, MOBIL DTE 11, ARAL Vitam GF 22, and BP Energol HLP-HM 22.
    6. Clean the dipstick, insert it into the oil tank while holding the splitter vertically, and ensure the oil level is between the two grooves on the dipstick.
    7. Clean and re-thread the Oil Drain Bolt, ensuring it is tightened to prevent leakage before placing the splitter horizontally.
  • Oil Level Check: Periodically check the oil level to ensure it remains between the two grooves on the dipstick. Refill if the level is low.
  • Wedge Sharpening: After some use, sharpen the log splitter's wedge using a fine-toothed file and smooth any burrs or crushed areas along the cutting edge.
  • General Maintenance: Keep the log splitter clean for best and safest performance. Store it in a secure location away from children and unqualified users.
