  • Starting a Fire: Never use gasoline, kerosene, charcoal lighter fluid, or similar liquids.
  • Damper: When using a decorative appliance, the fireplace damper must be set in the fully open position.
  • Overfiring: Avoid burning excessive quantities of scrap lumber, pine branches, paper, or cardboard boxes that exceed the volume of a normal log fire. Do not burn trash, chemicals, or chemically treated combustibles, as this can damage the fireplace system and pose hazards.
  • Glass Doors: If equipped, glass doors must be fully opened or fully closed. Never leave them partially open.
  • Outside Air Kit: If installed, ensures adequate air for combustion.
  • Fan/Blower Kit (Optional): For circulating models, enhances heat distribution. Use only IHP manufactured blowers.

  • Smoke Detectors: Recommended in hallways adjacent to the room where the fireplace is installed.

Maintenance Features

  • Ash Disposal: Ashes should be placed in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid and placed on a noncombustible surface, away from combustible materials, until thoroughly cooled.
  • Creosote Removal: When wood is burned slowly, creosote accumulates in the chimney flue. The chimney should be inspected at least twice a year during the heating season. If creosote accumulates to 1/8" (3 mm) or more, it must be removed to reduce the risk of a chimney fire.
  • Chimney Inspection: Inspect the chimney at least twice a year.
  • Cleaning Glass Doors: Use commercial glass cleaner or soap and water. Do not use abrasive material.
