Overview

The Tandem Mobi is an insulin pump designed for individuals requiring insulin delivery, offering a range of features for managing diabetes. It is a compact device that uses LED lights to communicate its status, alerts, and alarms, and can be controlled via a dedicated pump button or a smartphone application.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Tandem Mobi is to deliver insulin. This includes basal insulin delivery, which can be standard or a temporary rate (Temp Rate), and bolus insulin delivery, including quick boluses and extended boluses. The pump is designed to provide continuous insulin delivery based on programmed settings, helping users manage their blood glucose levels.

Usage Features:

The Tandem Mobi offers several usage features, primarily centered around its pump button and LED status indicator.

Pump Button:

The pump button serves multiple purposes for interacting with the device:

  • Snooze Alerts and Alarms: By pressing and releasing the button three times in quick succession, users can snooze alerts and alarms, provided the snooze feature is enabled.
  • Check Pump Status: A single quick press and release of the button will illuminate the LED Status Indicator, allowing users to check the pump's current status. A slight delay between the button press and the light illuminating is normal.
  • Quick Bolus Delivery: To deliver a quick bolus, users press and hold the pump button until they hear two beeps or feel vibrations (if enabled). The process for delivering a quick bolus involves several steps:
    1. Initiation: Press and hold the pump button.
    2. Confirmation of Readiness: Listen for two beeps or feel vibrations, indicating the pump is ready to accept bolus increments.
    3. Increment Selection: Press the pump button for each desired increment of insulin. The pump will beep/vibrate with each press to confirm the selection.
    4. Confirmation of Amount: Wait for the pump to beep/vibrate once for each increment pressed, confirming the total desired amount.
    5. Delivery: After the pump beeps/vibrates to confirm the amount, press and hold the pump button for several seconds until a final confirmation beep/vibration occurs, which initiates the bolus delivery.

LED Status Indicator:

Located above the pump button, the LED Status Indicator consists of two lights that use different colors and blinking patterns to communicate the pump's status.

Understanding the Color Coding:

  • Green: Indicates either basal insulin delivery (standard or Temp Rate) or confirmation of an action initiated from the smartphone app.
  • Blue: Signifies either a bolus insulin delivery or that the tubing is being filled during a cartridge load.
  • White: Represents that the insulin pump is currently charging or that insulin delivery has been manually stopped.
  • Yellow: Indicates an alert or reminder, prompting the user to check their Tandem Mobi mobile app for more details.
  • Red: Signals an alarm or malfunction, meaning all insulin deliveries have been stopped. This requires immediate attention, and users are advised to test their blood glucose if they cannot check their smartphone.

Pump Status and Actions (LED Patterns):

When checking the pump status via the button or initiating insulin delivery, specific LED patterns appear:

  • Basal Rate Delivery: The two lights alternate and pulsate green.
  • Temp Rate Delivery: One light is solid green, and the other light pulsates green.
  • Bolus Delivery: The two lights alternate and pulsate blue.
  • Extended Bolus Delivery: One light is solid blue, and the other light pulsates blue.

Alerts and Alarms (Blinking Light Patterns):

The pump uses blinking light patterns to communicate alerts, alarms, malfunctions, or when insulin delivery has been manually stopped. In these situations, users are warned to test their blood glucose if they cannot check their smartphone for messaging.

  • Pump Reminder: Both lights blink yellow once.
  • All Deliveries Stopped Manually: Both lights blink white three times.
  • Pump Malfunction or Alarm: Both lights blink red three times.
  • Pump or CGM Alert: Both lights blink yellow two times.

Maintenance Features:

The Tandem Mobi requires charging to maintain its functionality.

How to Charge the Pump:

  1. Connect Charging Pad: Ensure the charging pad is connected to a power source using the provided USB cable.
  2. Place Pump on Pad: Place the insulin pump on the center of the charging pad.
  3. Confirm Illumination: Verify that the charging pad illuminates when the pump is initially placed, indicating proper connection and charging initiation.

Pump Battery Level:

To determine the pump's battery level without using the Tandem Mobi mobile app, the pump must be placed on the charging pad. The LED Status Indicator will light up to show the battery charge level. When the pump is initially placed on the charging pad, the pad will light up for 30 seconds to indicate charging and then dim.

Battery Level Indications (LED Patterns):

  • Under 50% Charge: One LED Status Indicator will pulsate white.
  • No Charge to Very Low Charge: No LED Status Indicator will illuminate, or one LED Status Indicator will pulsate red.
  • Above 50% Charge: One LED Status Indicator will stay solid white, and the other LED Status Indicator will pulsate white.
  • Fully Charged: Both LED Status Indicators will dim.
