Overview

The Technika TFS54FC-SES is a 54cm freestanding electric cooker from the Professional Series, designed for domestic use. This appliance combines a cooktop with an oven, offering a comprehensive solution for various cooking needs.

Cooktop Features

The cooktop area is equipped with four solid-cast hotplates, providing efficient and fast cooking. These hotplates are sealed all around, preventing spilt liquids from seeping underneath, which simplifies cleaning and maintenance. Each hotplate has its own control knob, allowing for precise temperature adjustment. An indicator light illuminates when a hotplate is turned on, providing a visual cue for operation. Before initial use, the hotplates should be heated to high for approximately 3 minutes to harden their protective coating. After cooling, a thin layer of cooking oil should be applied to seal and protect the surface. It's important to use pots and pans with flat bottoms that are slightly larger than the hotplate to ensure energy efficiency and even cooking. Overhanging cookware should be avoided to prevent scorching adjacent bench tops. The stainless steel sealing rings around the hotplates may discolour with use, which is normal.

Oven Features

The oven offers multiple cooking functions, including:

  • Light: Illuminates the oven interior without activating any heating elements.
  • Grill: Activates the top central heating element, ideal for grilling or browning food. The lowest shelf position should not be used in this mode.
  • Fan Assisted Grill: Engages both the upper heating element and the fan, suitable for grilling food without turning it over and for using two shelves simultaneously. Again, the lowest shelf position is not recommended.
  • Fan Forced: Utilizes the rear circular heating element and the fan to ensure even heat distribution throughout the oven. This mode is excellent for general-purpose cooking on up to three shelves at once.
  • Defrost: Operates only the fan, circulating room temperature air to defrost food. This method significantly reduces defrosting time for all types of food.

The oven temperature is controlled by a dedicated knob, allowing users to select temperatures between 60°C and MAX. An oven indicator light comes on when the oven is heating and cycles on and off to indicate that the selected temperature is being maintained. The oven features five shelf positions, providing flexibility for different cooking requirements. For optimal baking results, preheating the oven for 15-20 minutes is recommended.

Safety and Maintenance

The appliance incorporates several safety features and requires specific maintenance practices. It is crucial to ensure that no downward pressure is applied to the oven door when open, especially by children. Accessible parts, particularly the oven door, can become hot during use, so young children should be kept away. Oven gloves should be used when touching hot surfaces. The cooker must be installed according to current laws and regulations by qualified tradesmen and includes an anti-tilt bracket to prevent accidental tipping. All specified vents, openings, and airspaces must remain unblocked to ensure proper ventilation.

Cleaning the cooker is straightforward. Before cleaning, the appliance must be switched off. The enamel surfaces can be cleaned with a soft cloth dipped in warm soapy water, with difficult stains removed using a nylon scourer or creamed powder cleanser. Abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or wax polishes should be avoided. For the electric cooktop, a moist cloth is suitable for normal cleaning, while commercial hotplate cleansers can be used for heavier stains. After cleaning, any cleanser residue should be removed, and the hotplate dried by running the element for a short period. Hillmark "Shine On" hotplate protector or similar products are recommended weekly to prevent rust or corrosion. The oven door can be removed and disassembled for a more thorough clean, allowing access to the inner pane of glass. Non-abrasive products or sponges should be used for cleaning the glass, and harsh abrasive cleaners or sharp metal scrapers should be avoided to prevent scratching or shattering.

The cooker is fitted with a cooling fan that continues to run after the oven is turned off to aid in cooling. Opening the oven door ajar can help reduce the cooling fan's running time. The oven light can be replaced by disconnecting the appliance from the power supply, removing the glass cover, and replacing the lamp with a high-temperature resistant bulb (220-240V, 25W, E14 type).

Troubleshooting

The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common issues. For instance, if elements don't work, checking the circuit breaker and household fuse is advised. If the oven or grill isn't working, ensure power is on and controls are correctly set. Uneven cooking can be remedied by adjusting shelf position, using smaller trays, or rotating food. Problems with baked goods being too brown on top or bottom can be addressed by adjusting oven temperature, shelf position, or cooking time. Poor hot air circulation in the fan oven can be improved by elevating food onto a rack. For hotplates, using stable, flat-bottomed pots and pans of appropriate size is crucial to prevent damage and ensure efficient cooking.

Installation

Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician/installer. The cooker requires a 220-240V / 50-60Hz AC power supply and is rated at 6560-7810W, necessitating a minimum 32A circuit breaker. The supply cable must be positioned to avoid reaching temperatures above 50°C. The cooker is designed to fit into a 540mm wide gap in kitchen cabinets, with a minimum clearance of 100mm from side walls. The anti-tilt plate must be securely fixed to the floor to ensure stability. The splashback is installed by removing it from the rear of the cooker, positioning it into the tabs, and securing it with screws. Surrounding kitchen cabinets must be capable of withstanding 85°C.
