Overview

The TRONIK 812 is a battery charger designed for lead-acid batteries, converting AC input to DC output with a Wa type charge curve. Its operation is managed by the MTL digital charge controller, a microprocessor-based electronic board.

Function Description:

The primary function of the TRONIK 812 is to charge lead-acid batteries automatically. It offers a comprehensive charging cycle with various features to ensure optimal battery health and safety. The charger monitors the entire charging curve and incorporates several safety mechanisms.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Charge Curve: Wa type.
  • Controller: MTL digital charge controller, microprocessor-based.
  • Operating Temperature: 5°C to 45°C.
  • Storage Temperature: -20°C to 60°C.
  • Relative Humidity: Less than 75%.
  • Input Voltage Configuration: Multi-input chargers (CF-MTL-42401, CF-MTL-42403) allow adjustment via metal jumpers on terminal blocks.
    • CF-MTL-42401: 208/240V, 480V.
    • CF-MTL-42403: 208/240V, 480V.
  • Input Tuning Calibration:
    • CF-MTL-2401: 220V, 240V, 250V.
    • CF-MTL-42401: 208/452V, 225/480V, 240/506V.
    • CF-MTL-42403: 208/452V, 225/480V, 240/506V.
    • CF-MTL-6003: 575V, 600V, 610V.
  • Gassing Point Programming: Adjustable via DIP switches (DS1-SW2 and DS1-SW3) on the MTL control board. Default value is 2.40 Volt/cell. Options include 2.35V, 2.38V, 2.40V, 2.45V.
  • Minimum Battery Voltage for Start: 1.62 V/cell.
  • Maximum Battery Voltage for Start: 2.60 V/cell.
  • Maximum Charging Threshold: 2.80 V/cell.
  • Safety Timer: 12 hours to reach gassing voltage.
  • Equalization Cycles: 5 additional charge cycles of 30 minutes each, with 14 hours and 30 minutes interval between cycles (Auto Equalize and Refresh mode).
  • Display: 4-digit digital display on the front panel.

Usage Features:

  • Automatic Operation: The charger is programmed to execute a complete charge cycle automatically.
  • Battery Connection and Autostart: Connect the battery, and the charger will display the battery voltage. If the voltage is within acceptable limits (1.62 V/cell to 2.60 V/cell), it will wait 3 seconds and then start charging, displaying the programmed gassing voltage.
  • Error Messages:
    • "V LO": Battery voltage below 1.62 V/cell.
    • "V HI": Battery voltage above 2.60 V/cell (at start) or 2.80 V/cell (during charge).
    • "t.Err": Safety timer activated (gassing voltage not reached in 12 hours).
    • "b.Out": AC input black-out.
    • "FUSE": Blown DC output fuse or absent fuse.
  • Charge Operation Display: During charge, the display cycles through:
    • Battery Voltage (V/cell).
    • Charge Current (Amps).
    • Charge Time (Hours.Minutes/tens, e.g., 3.4h for 3h 40min).
    • Capacity Returned (Amp/hours).
  • Proportional Algorithm: Calculates charge time based on the time taken to reach gassing voltage. The final charge continues for half the time needed to reach gassing voltage, with a minimum total time of 30 minutes and a maximum of 5h 59m59s. This allows use with batteries of different capacities without manual adjustments.
  • Automatic Data Saving: In case of AC input black-outs, the microprocessor saves all relevant charging cycle data and restarts automatically from the point of interruption when power is restored.
  • Automatic Charge Termination: The charger shuts down when the charge is complete, displaying "End ELAPSEd x.x h" (time elapsed after termination).
  • Automatic Shutdown on Battery Disconnection: If the battery is disconnected during charge, the charger switches off automatically.
  • Manual Charge Termination: Pressing the red "MANUAL STOP" button on the front panel terminates the charge, displaying "STOP". This disables equalization and refresh functions.
  • Manual Equalize: Activated by pushing the "MANUAL-EQUALIZE" button during the first minutes of charge. Extends the charge cycle by 4 hours, displaying "Eq.On".
  • Daily Equalize: Extends all charge cycles by 4 hours. Useful for recovering highly sulphated batteries. Enabled by moving dipswitch DS1-SW1 to the ON position. Disabled by default.
  • Automatic Equalize and Refresh: Managed by the MTL control. After regular charge, adds 5 additional 30-minute charge cycles with 14.5-hour intervals. Enabled by moving dipswitch DS1-SW4 to the ON position. Enabled by default. During intervals, "End ELAPSEd x.x h" is shown; during cycles, "EqUAL ChArGInG" and current are shown.
  • Refresh Operation (Voltage Control): Keeps the battery in optimal condition during extended standby. The charger monitors battery voltage and automatically activates an extra charge cycle if the voltage drops below a predefined minimum threshold. The display shows "VoLt COntrOL" during monitoring and "rEFrESh" during an extra charge cycle.

Maintenance Features:

  • Safety Instructions: Emphasizes the importance of grounding, proper wiring, and avoiding damp conditions to prevent electric shock.
  • Regular Inspection: Inspect charging leads for damage.
  • Power Disconnect: Always shut off power at the disconnect switch or line breaker before inspection, adjustment, or servicing. Lock the switch OPEN or remove fuses.
  • Cleanliness: Keep inside parts clean and dry to prevent insulation failure.
  • Service Calls: If "t.Err" appears, it's recommended to call TECNIK's service department for a system check.
  • Qualified Personnel: Installation, use, and service should only be performed by qualified personnel.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation in the battery recharging area to prevent hydrogen gas accumulation.
  • Connector Care: Ensure the charger is OFF before connecting or disconnecting the battery to prevent arcing and burning of contacts.
