This document describes the Tefal Smart Protect iron, a steam iron designed for domestic and indoor use. It emphasizes safety, proper usage, and maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the appliance.
The Tefal Smart Protect iron is designed to make ironing efficient and safe. Its primary function is to remove creases from clothing using a combination of heat and steam. The iron features "Smart Technology," which provides an optimum combination of temperature and steam output, making it suitable for ironing various fabric types without manual temperature adjustment. This intelligent system aims to simplify the ironing process and protect delicate garments.
The iron offers both dry ironing and steam ironing capabilities. For stubborn creases, a "turbo steam" button provides an extra burst of steam. Vertical steam ironing is also supported, allowing users to refresh hanging garments or curtains without needing an ironing board. A spray function is available to moisten clothing, aiding in the removal of particularly difficult creases.
An "eco" setting is included to save energy, reducing consumption by 20% compared to the "normal" setting while still providing effective ironing for most fabrics. The iron is equipped with a temperature indicator light that illuminates when heating and turns off once the desired temperature is reached, signaling readiness for use.
A key safety feature is the "Auto-Off Function." If the iron remains unused for more than 8 minutes on its heel rest or more than 5 minutes laid flat or on its side, the electronic system automatically cuts power, and the temperature indicator light begins to flash. Moving the iron gently will restart it.
Before first use, it is recommended to remove any labels from the soleplate and allow the iron to operate in a horizontal position for a few moments, pushing the steam button several times. During initial uses, the appliance may produce smoke, a harmless odor, and light particle emissions, which are normal residues from the manufacturing process and will quickly disappear.
For water, the appliance is designed to operate using untreated tap water. However, if the water is very hard, mixing 50% untreated tap water with 50% distilled water is advised. It is crucial to avoid using pure demineralized or distilled water, water from clothes dryers, scented or softened water, rain water, filtered, bottled, or boiled water, or water from refrigerators, batteries, or air conditioners, as these can damage the iron and lead to issues like spitting, brown staining, leaking, or premature wear.
To fill the water tank, the iron must be unplugged. The steam control should be set to the "STOP" position. The iron is then lifted, with the soleplate pointed up, and the water tank cover is opened. Water should be filled up to the "Max" mark, and then the cover is closed.
Adjusting the temperature and steam is simplified by the Smart Technology. Users select either the "normal" or "eco" setting using a slider. The iron then automatically adjusts the temperature and steam output for all ironable fabric types, such as linen, denim, silk, cotton, polyester, wool, and viscose. Fabrics that cannot be ironed are excluded.
For dry ironing, the steam control should be set to the "STOP" position. Ironing can commence once the temperature indicator light turns off. To get more steam, the slider should be on "normal" or "eco," and the turbo steam button can be pressed periodically. To prevent water dripping, a few seconds interval should be maintained between presses.
Vertical steam ironing requires setting the thermostat control to "Normal." The turbo steam button is pressed in pulses while moving the iron from top to bottom. The iron should be held a few centimeters from the clothing to avoid burning delicate fabrics. This action can be repeated as needed. When vertical steaming, the item should be hung on a hanger, and the fabric kept taut with one hand. It is important to remember that the steam is very hot, and clothing should never be steam ironed while being worn.
For dampening clothing, the spray button can be pressed repeatedly during dry or steam ironing to moisten fabric and remove stubborn creases. Ensure there is water in the tank before using the spray function. While ironing, the iron should always be placed on its heel rest, never directly on the soleplate.
Proper storage and maintenance are essential for the iron's longevity. After use, the iron should be unplugged and allowed to cool for approximately 1 hour before storing. The water tank should be emptied, and the steam control set to the "STOP" position. The power cord can then be wrapped around the bottom of the iron's body, and the iron stored on its heel rest.
Regular cleaning of the anti-calc valve is recommended once a month. To do this, unplug the iron and empty the water tank. Open the water tank cover and pull on the valve near the steam control to remove it. Soak the valve in a glass of water with lemon juice for 4 hours, then rinse it under the tap. Finally, insert the valve back into place, pushing until a click is heard. It is crucial never to touch the end of the valve, and the iron will not function without it.
Descaling the steam chamber is also recommended once a month. First, fill the water tank and allow the iron to heat up on its heel rest with the thermostat control set to "normal." Once the indicator light turns off, unplug the iron and place it over a sink. Remove the anti-calc valve. Gently shake the iron in a horizontal position over the sink until water containing impurities leaks from the soleplate. The turbo steam trigger can be pressed to help flush out minerals. After this, replace the anti-calc valve, pushing until it clicks. Finally, plug in the iron for 2 minutes on its heel rest to dry the soleplate.
For cleaning the soleplate, it should be wiped with a damp non-metallic pad while still warm. Chemical or abrasive products should never be used. Before the next use, it is advisable to turn on the iron in a horizontal position without contact with laundry to eliminate any remaining mineral residues on the soleplate.
The manual also includes a troubleshooting section to address common problems, providing possible causes and solutions. For instance, if water leaks from the soleplate, it might be due to using steam when the iron isn't hot enough or pressing the turbo steam button too often. If the iron leaks at the start of ironing, it could be because the anti-calc valve was removed during filling or the steam control dial was not set to "STOP." Brown discharge or a dirty soleplate might indicate the use of incorrect water types, burning clothing fibers, or starch residue. If the iron produces little to no steam, the water tank might be empty, the anti-calc valve dirty, or the iron clogged with limescale. If the soleplate is scratched or damaged, it could be from placing it on a metallic iron rest or ironing over metal zips or fasteners. If the iron steams once the water tank is filled, the steam control dial might not be set to "STOP" or the tank is too full. If the spray doesn't work, the water tank might not be full enough.
