Why is my Thenow HSN-J15-Z cooling unit not running?
    • M
      Mr. Nicholas Suarez Jr.Aug 20, 2025
If your Thenow Wine Cooler's cooling unit isn't running, there could be several reasons: * There's no power. Check the power at the receptacle and fuses. * The power cord is unplugged. Ensure the power cord is properly plugged in. * The voltage is low. In this case, it's best to contact an authorized electrician. * There are incorrect or loose wirings. Inspect all wirings and connections. * The ambient temperature is outside the unit's working conditions (above 35°C or below 5°C). Make sure the ambient temperature meets the unit's requirements. * The temperature setting is higher than the ambient temperature. Lower the temperature setting. * The unit is in defrosting mode. Wait for 5-30 minutes for it to complete.

Overview

This document describes the Shanghai Thenow Purification Technology Co. Ltd. Wine Cellar Cooling Units, specifically the self-contained (HSN-J15-Z) and plug-in (HSN-JC5) models. These units are designed for proper wine storage in cabinets or smaller wine rooms, maintaining optimal temperature and humidity levels.

Function Description

The core function of these units is to create and maintain ideal conditions for wine storage. They utilize a cycling vapor compression refrigeration system. When the compressor operates, it draws in low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant gas from the evaporator, compresses it into high-temperature, high-pressure gas, and then directs it to the condenser to condense into liquid, releasing heat in the process. After throttling by the thermal expansion valve, the refrigerant enters the evaporator, absorbs heat, and evaporates back into gas, completing the refrigeration cycle. The system also adjusts indoor temperature by changing the refrigerant flow direction, allowing for partial or total condensing heat to be exhausted outside.

For dehumidification, as wet air flows over the evaporator surface, its temperature drops below the dew point, causing steam to condense. This water is collected and drained. The controller automatically adjusts compressor start-up time based on the set humidity to achieve the desired humidity level.

The HSN-J15-Z model also includes heating and humidification functions. Heating is provided by an internal PTC heater for electric heating compensation. Humidification is achieved through a circulating water wet-film auto-control system, where water is sprayed into the room with a large air volume. The wet film is made of Swedish organic polymer material with sterilization and disinfection properties.

Usage Features

General Features:

  • Easy Installation: Condenser and evaporator are combined within one appliance for quick setup (HSN-J15-Z). The plug-in design of the HSN-JC5 makes installation very simple, potentially not requiring a licensed HVAC technician.
  • Intelligent Control: Both models feature an intelligent control panel with famous brand sensors and integrated ModBus connection, ensuring stable quality and precise control.
  • Optimal Environment: Designed to maintain temperatures between 10-18℃ (50-64°F) and humidity between 50-70% RH (HSN-J15-Z).
  • Quiet Operation: Unique appearance design minimizes vibration and noise.
  • Uniform Temperature: Optimal air distribution ensures consistent temperature throughout the wine cabinet space.
  • Durability: Commercial-grade, corrosion-resistant components and a spray-painted frame contribute to long-term durability.
  • Humidification and Heating (HSN-J15-Z): Built-in wet film humidifier and PTC heater maintain proper constant temperature and humidity.
  • Compact Design (HSN-JC5): Small volume allows for easy placement within cabinets.
  • Self-absorption Drainage (HSN-JC5): Unique design for efficient drainage.
  • Famous Brand Compressor (HSN-JC5): Ensures safe, stable, and low energy consumption.

Installation Conditions:

  • Units must be placed in a properly ventilated location to prevent heat buildup.
  • Installation should be on a horizontal ground or platform, with a tilt angle not exceeding one degree. The platform must support the unit's weight.
  • Good ventilation and easy maintenance require a flexibly disassembled wine cabinet grill.
  • Avoid installing units in danger areas with strong magnetic fields, steam, dust, heating sources, corrosive elements, or combustible gases.
  • A minimum horizontal clearance of 50mm (100mm is better) around the unit is crucial for unobstructed airflow.
  • Foam tape should be placed at the bottom and sides of the unit before installation.
  • Working environment temperature should be 5℃-35℃, with relative humidity below 80%.
  • Recommended air ducts are heat-insulating phenolic board (15-20mm thick) or stainless steel duct (20mm insulation).
  • If the wine cabinet's back is against a wall without vents, ensure left intake air vents on the sides of the condensing intake air are present and as large as possible. Maintain at least 100mm horizontal clearance.
  • For HSN-J15-Z, an electromagnetic water valve and ball valve are suggested for wet-film water inlet flow control to prevent leaks and operational failure.

Maintenance Features

General Requirements:

  • Operate within specified working conditions: 5℃-35℃ ambient temperature, relative humidity below 80%.
  • Ensure power supply matches specified voltage; avoid operation with missing phase or undervoltage.
  • Turn off power if the equipment has not been used for a long time.

Cleaning and Replacing:

  • Safety First: Always disconnect electric power before any maintenance to prevent electric shock.
  • Temperature Probe: The temperature probe is a sensitive element. In dusty environments, clean it regularly with low-pressure water (e.g., using a dust ball blower). Replace if accuracy degrades.
  • Condensate Removal: In high temperature and humidity environments, excess condensate in the wine cabinet may need manual removal.
  • Wet Film Pad (HSN-JC5): The self-absorbent wet film inside the JC5 models is a consumable part and should be replaced at least once every six months.
    1. Turn off the unit and cut power. Loosen and remove the four screws of the fan assembly, setting it aside.
    2. Remove the old wet film pad and insert a new one, ensuring the direction and placement match the original. The wet film must be flat, without bending or deformation, as this affects moisture absorption.

Troubleshooting:

  • Wait 3 minutes after power failure before opening the maintenance door to allow capacitors to discharge.
  • Avoid touching the condenser surface as it can be very hot.
  • Dangerous voltage may still be present at the starting capacitor terminals even if the fan and compressor are stopped.
  • The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting guide for common issues like:
    • Cooling unit not running (e.g., no power, low voltage, incorrect wiring, ambient temperature issues).
    • Cannot dehumidify (e.g., blocked air grille, stuck air filter, refrigerant leakage, compressor/fan not working).
    • No air exhaust (e.g., blocked air supply, fan not working).
    • Louder noise (e.g., loose parts, stuck air filter, improper installation).
    • Temperature too high (e.g., high setting, improper seals, large cabinet/room, fan fault, refrigerant leakage).
    • Unit running too long or continually (e.g., improper model choice, high ambient temperature).
    • Evaporator icing (e.g., restricted airflow, unit not stopping, low ambient temperature, bad thermostat/sensor, refrigerant leaking, expansion valve blockage).
    • Fan keeps running (e.g., fan protection procedure, wrong wiring).
    • No cooling but compressor running (e.g., refrigerant leakage, restricted evaporator airflow).
  • For complex issues, contact a local dealer or authorized repair station.
  • All electrical installation and maintenance work must be performed by a professional electrical engineer. The company is not responsible for issues arising from unauthorized opening of the panel or electric control cabinet.
