Overview

This document is an owner's guide for Thermann Electric and Gas Storage Water Heaters, providing essential information for safe operation, installation, maintenance, and warranty.

Function Description:

Thermann Electric and Gas Storage Water Heaters are designed to provide hot water for domestic use. They store and heat water in a tank, making it available on demand. The guide covers various models, including electric storage water heaters ranging from 25L to 400L capacities, and gas storage water heaters with 135L and 170L capacities. Some models (indicated by an 'H' at the end of the model number) are pre-fitted with a hard-water anode, which is beneficial in areas with specific water conditions.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Electric Storage Water Heaters:
    • Models: 25THMS124P, 25THMS136, 50THMS124P, 50THMS136, 80THMB136, 125THMB118, 125THMB136, 160THMB124, 160THMB136, 250THMB136, 250THMB236, 315THMB136, 315THMB236, 315THMB248, 400THMB136, 400THMB248.
    • New Zealand specific models: N135THMB118, N135THMB130, N180THMB124, N180THMB130.
    • Designed for single phase 240V a.c. supply.
    • PTR valve rating: 1,000 kPa and 10 kW.
    • Designed for direct connection to water supply pressures of up to 800 kPa.
    • Equipped with a combination thermostat and over-temperature energy cut-out.
    • Pre-wired models (ending with "P") are factory fitted with a power supply cord for standard general purpose power outlets.
  • Gas Storage Water Heaters:
    • Models: 135THMB4N, 135THMB4P, 170THMB4N.
    • PTR valve rating: 1,400 kPa and 10kW.
    • Designed for direct connection to water supply pressures of up to 1,120 kPa.
    • Fitted with a gas control valve that acts as a thermostat and includes over-temperature energy cut-outs.
  • General Water Quality Requirements:
    • Designed for use where Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) content is less than 2500 mg/L. Tank failure warranty does not apply if TDS exceeds this limit.
    • In areas where TDS exceeds 600mg/L, a hard-water model or an aluminium alloy anode is recommended to prevent over-reactivity of the standard magnesium alloy anode.
    • If water saturation index is greater than 0.40, an expansion control valve should be fitted. If greater than 0.80, the electrical heating element should be replaced with a low power density Incoloy heating element.
  • Installation Requirements: Must be installed by a licensed tradesperson in accordance with the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA), New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) Clause G12, AS/NZS 3000 Electrical Installations, AS/NZS 5601.1 Gas Installations (for gas models), and local authority regulations.
  • Safety Features: Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve, over-temperature energy cut-out (electric models), gas control valve with over-temperature cut-outs (gas models).

Usage Features:

  • High Temperature Water Warning: The appliance may deliver water at high temperatures; additional delivery temperature control may be required as per local regulations.
  • Hydrogen Accumulation Warning: If the water heater is not used for two weeks or more, flammable hydrogen gas may accumulate. To dissipate, turn on a hot tap for several minutes (not a dishwasher or clothes washer) without smoking or open flames nearby.
  • Lighting Gas Water Heater: A detailed procedure is provided, emphasizing safety precautions like not looking directly into the burner area and waiting for unburnt gas to escape. The control knob allows setting desired water temperatures.
  • Filling the Water Heater: Instructions for filling the tank before turning on electrical supply or lighting the gas, including opening hot water taps and operating the PTR valve.
  • Shutting Down: Procedures for safely shutting down gas storage water heaters by turning off the control knob, gas isolation valve, and cold water supply.
  • Draining the Water Heater: Instructions for draining the tank, involving turning off power/gas, operating the PTR valve, disconnecting the cold water inlet, and attaching a drain hose.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Servicing: Recommended to extend life and ensure safe, efficient operation. Warranty is not conditional on regular servicing.
  • Six Month Service (All Water Heaters - Owner can perform):
    • Operate the Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve for approximately 10 seconds by lifting the easing lever to confirm water discharge.
    • Repeat for the expansion control valve (if installed).
  • Annual Service (Gas Storage Water Heaters - Licensed tradesperson only):
    • Inspect and flush PTR Valve and expansion control valve.
    • Check spark gap, gas control valve, and thermocouple.
    • Check and adjust main burner pressure.
    • Clean and check main burner and pilot light.
  • Five Year Service (All Water Heaters - Licensed tradesperson only):
    • Replace the PTR Valve.
    • Inspect and flush the expansion control valve (if installed).
    • Replace the anode.
    • Drain and flush the water heater.
    • For gas models, also include items from the Annual Service.
    • Recommended every 3 years in areas where TDS exceeds 600 mg/L.
  • PTR Valve Operation: The PTR Valve must be operated regularly (at least every six months) to remove lime deposits and verify it is not blocked. Continuous leakage may indicate a problem.
  • Anode Replacement: Anode replacement is part of the five-year service. Aluminium alloy anodes are available for specific water conditions.

Warranty Information:

  • Manufacturer: Dux Manufacturing Limited ("Dux").
  • One Year Parts and Labour Warranty: Covers defects from faulty materials or workmanship for one year. Dux will repair or replace failed components or the water heater, including reasonable labour costs.
  • Extended Tank Failure Warranty:
    • 25 & 50L Electric Storage Tanks: Six years for single family dwellings.
    • 80 - 400L Electric Storage Tanks: Nine years for single family dwellings.
    • Gas Storage Tanks: Six years for single family dwellings.
    • All Other Applications: Two years.
    • During this period, Dux provides a replacement water heater free of charge; installation and other labour costs are the owner's responsibility.
  • Warranty Conditions:
    • Applies only to the water heater and components supplied by Dux, not installer-supplied components.
    • Tank failure warranty does not apply if connected to water supply with TDS > 2500 mg/L.
    • Does not cover defects from: improper installation, faulty plumbing/water supply (including excessive pressure), use contrary to manual, unauthorized alterations/repairs, accidental damage, or abuse.
    • If installed in an inaccessible location, warranty may not cover major dismantling/removal costs.
    • For locations outside metropolitan areas or >100km from a Dux office/service agent, owner is responsible for transport costs of the water heater/components.
  • Commencement of Warranty: From the date of installation (with proof), otherwise from the date of manufacture (shown on compliance plate). Replacement under warranty does not change the original commencement date.
  • Consequential Losses: Claims for indirect damage (furniture, carpets, etc.) are met only if damage was reasonably foreseeable and installation was compliant with instructions and statutory requirements.
  • Australian Consumer Law (ACL): Goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded. Remedies for major failure include replacement or refund, and compensation for foreseeable loss. For non-major failure, goods can be repaired or replaced.
  • Making a Warranty Claim: Contact Customer Service (Australia: 1300 412 612, New Zealand: 0800 729 389), provide serial/model number, full name/address/contact, and proof of installation date. Costs for non-warranty defects are the owner's responsibility.
